    Of all the Pythons, Palin impressed me the most regarding his range of characters. He could really be just about anybody and do it believably.

      I particularly loved his drill sergeant in MoL, "WHATYOUVENEVERSEENTHEHANDOFGODBEFOOOOOOORE??!!!!"

    • @hwren9845
      @hwren9845 6 лет назад +8

      Yes exactly! Just look at the different characters he plays in Life of Brian; the ex-leper, Pilate, the insane one that's chained up, the polite one directing people to their crosses, "big nose", Francis. They're all so distinct, yet each one is a superb performance. You never feel like you're watching 'Michael Palin doing a bit' which I often get with Cleese and Idle (as much I love the two of them).

    Genuinely, this is sort of a silly observation, but I find it fascinating and so neat how gently the Pythons talk about Michael. Even when they do say anything 'negative' about him, they qualify it and surround it with compliments - like they say his writing benefitted from a bit of the edge provided by the others, but that what he does to the writing is to make it dance. With the others, they'll speak about each other's flaws and foibles, but with him they're so soft.

    Michael always seemed to me the most amiable and friendly of the group, the one that freely associated with all the other pythons and tried to make them a team rather than separate comics all pulling in different directions. I also think this is why they all have nothing but good to say about him and is a testament to his importance to Monty Python.

  • @TheClearSummer
    @TheClearSummer 11 лет назад +209

    I've always felt like Michael was the softest of the Pythons. XD If I saw the Pythons together, the only one I'd really dare to approach is him. I will be absolutely terrified of John Cleese or Eric Idle! XD

    "After 5 years, they give me a brush" might be the single greatest punchline in Flying Circus and a testament to Palin's dual sense of both classic and abstract humor.

    Michael Palin is a genius at comic timing and at what pythons do. When I saw his other programs it became so clear to me that he is genuinely funny, charming/lovable/who-could-easily-have-a-lot-of-fans and yet not over the top or overdoing it or showing-off in any manner.

  • @EmileJoulbert

    I find Michael to be a sort of middle-man in Python. The two Terrys pulled them in the visual/conceptional direction, while John, Graham and Eric were mostly verbal and hung up on logic. He was probably the compromise guy, which I guess is why he always ended up having by far the most parts in their shows and movies.
    It's easy to see why he's the best-liked Python.

  • @dottedpyjamas
    @dottedpyjamas 10 лет назад +13

    I found at least 3 comments asking about the scene at 3:04 so I decided to look it up. It's season 3 episode 13 (near the end) - it's also John Cleese's last appearance on the show. And I think the sketch is called "Credits of the year"

    • @EmileJoulbert
      @EmileJoulbert 8 лет назад +6

      The episode is called 'Grandstand'. It was the penultimate Monty Python's Flying Circus episode where John appeared in front of a studio audience - 18th May 1972 - but the last one(#39) to be transmitted on BBC - 18th January 1973.
      The episode 'E.Henry Thripshaw's Disease'(#36 - the one with Tudor porn) was the last one recorded, on 25th May 1972.
      John looks a bit bored, especially during the last six shows(#37,#31,#34,#35,#39,#36), which were done about three months after the first seven.
      But when the 3rd series started airing, in October, they had moved on to writing Monty Python and the Holy Grail, including John.
      Those were the credits of the year 1972. Should have squeezed in Monty Python's Previous Record and the second German show as well, but there just wasn't time.

    The last time I saw Michael was at a panel discussion a few years ago with a couple of moderators talking to Eric, John, and Michael. They were intro'ed one at a time and Michael was last. Not only did he get the biggest round of applause, women of various ages in the rows around me were looking at each other like, "Wow, he looks fantastic!"
    And he's not that much of a pushover; he's the one who said "NO" to taking their O2 stage show on a world tour. He was done, and now Python is *done*, Terry Jones' illness notwithstanding.

    With regards to comic acting (putting the writing to one side: it goes without saying that together they were the best writers ever), these were six of the greatest of all time. Very few others come close (Peter Sellers, Hugh Laurie maybe and I struggle to think of any more with their range). Michael Palin is, without any doubt in my mind, the best of them all. And I regard comic acting as the most difficult and important form of acting so that makes Michael Palin the greatest actor of all time.
