This is the very event that lead me to your RUclips page. I was on a road where the asphalt ended and it turned into gravel and the road ended and I had to “somehow “ make a U-turn.As an inexperienced rider I dropped my 900 lb Harley Davidson Electra Glide when trying to turn! I knew I needed to research directions on how to turn safely. So that night I went to RUclips and your channel came up, I then went to what I called Robert Simmons skid row addiction. I saturated myself with hours and hours of your class sessions! The rest is history!just two years later I placed Third on a motorcycle rodeo in expert class! Thanks Robert Simmons for paying it forward 😊

That’s an awesome story! I found Robert in a similar way- this Spring -I bought a bigger bike and I dumped it turning onto a dirt road with an uneven surface. I am now super motivated to get through exercises 1-10 correctly and with ease then we will see what comes next. I’ve got 1-4 down working on #5.

I've been stuck on gravel hills because of a 4 wheeler blocking me, worked construction. Gravel is evil. I used to carry a small textured piece of metal to put under my kick stand to act like a snow shoe when I had to park.

    • @M1keMorrison
      @M1keMorrison 3 дня назад

@@jeremylindsey94 It's when your front tire loses traction while the wheel is turned or the bike is leaned. This happened to me when I was pulling into a gravel parking lot. I came in a little too hot and grabbed the front brake while turning the wheel. Rookie mistake.

Great job, indeed! Impressive and very important.
I´ve got a couple of sharp curves in my mind, here in berlin (germany) where the wind regularly deposits rubble and rubbish on the road.
A 90 degree blind bend near my home where you allways have to be aware of paper, plastic bags, recently covid masks, in fall leafs beeing on the road mid turn, heck even leftover carparts and dirt from cardrivers underestimating that curve and crashing into the divider (about once a month) ! People allways frown on me going around that bend very slow. I don´t care. I just wanna go home and arrive safely!
Even more so, since I´ve gotten a new bike, I´m not jet gotten used to. Yes it´s a heavy one, again. :)
I treat this bend as a gravel road. More often than not it IS.
During winter, our roads get sprinkled with gravel against icy conditions. You can´t allways avoid that. You have to go to the gravelroad mindset, or you´re busted.
    Keep it up!

I grew up on gravel roads and always had a healthy respect for them.
My driveway is gravel for about 65 yards and about a 7% grade up to the paved road for about 50 ft so clutch and throttle control are very important, truthfully I've been doing it for so long it's almost natural.
I have three Harleys, an Electra Glide Ultra Classic 92, Springer Softtail 91, and my absolute favorite, my 1978 flh bobber.
The only one that causes me to take a little extra care is the Electra glide, I've only had it for about a year now, and it's the least ridden, and that's why I have been watching videos like yours, I'm 61 years old and never to old to learn more techniques.
Great video, and you have a new subscriber.

Within the first two months of having my first motorcycle, I accidentally pulled into a sloped gravel driveway to turn around because it was raining and I was trying to head back home. By the time I realized the driveway was gravel, it was too late and I went into a downward slope u-shape gravel driveway, but kept the momentum while staying in the friction zone and maintained control even though the back tire skid momentarily turning to the left, made it through the turn up the slope and back onto the pavement! Your channel and others instilled great knowledge in me to the point that I was able to react accordingly! Oh, and I had a passenger on the back! Thank you!

I rode 7 miles gravel road with Buffalo’s on and about it. Stopped at visitor center at end. That was fun. Lol. I have a full dress Triumph Trophy SE. I need to practice u-turns like he says as I am not confident enough yet. I live on a gravel road so get lots of practice making deliberate moves. No front brake. Hold on loose and straight up. The bike will stay up if you don’t hang on too tight. Let the front wheel move with the gravel. If you panic as the front wheel goes left and right you will drop it.

Awesome stuff Lt! This reminds me of my motor training at NCSHP where we took the motors off- road and through various terrains. You never think that you'll need this skill set until the day that you do. Earlier this year I was performing my duties as a lead ride escort for a group ride up to the mountains and back. The trip was flawless until Google navigation had me make a right turn and the road suddenly dropped off from pavement to gravel after the turn was complete. There was no turning around as the road was downhill and I had several riders that had committed before the gravel dust cloud appeared following me. I was very thankful for my training on that day and I knew exactly what to do. The road was a good half mile with banked curves before ending at a paved intersection. No one dropped their bikes and we all laughed about our off-road adventure once we returned back to the dealership 🤣. Train like your life depends on it because one day it just may! Keep up the good work Sir!

I a have watched hundreds of riding instructional riding videos. This is one of the best! This is the only one that shows how to ride a bagger in gravel. I ride baggers, cruisers, dirt bikes, and adventure bikes and still am intimidated riding baggers and cruisers on gravel. There is a a lot of gravel where I live and I take my GSA 1250 or KTM 500 when I go places that I can’t avoid the gravel. Your video has encouraged me to improve my skills riding skills. This is one of the most relevant videos I have seen. I had asked another well known motorcycle instructor to do a lesson on gravel riding and it never happened. I have ridden for over 55 years but have always avoided gravel and when not able to avoid it have been extremely tense and nervous. I am fortunate that I have never gone down due to gravel, but that has not prevented me from being fearful of it. When on pavement, I am known by my riding buddies to be fearless. Thank you for the informative video.

Robert, so timely for you to do a video covering this topic. So even though I started riding streetbikes in 1979, that does not equal 44 years of experience! I've ridden an FXR since '99 and have felt quite confident in my ability on it. U turns on a 2 lane road no problems, 2 up even, been on gravel and dirt several times without issues, heck my driveway is rocks and dirt. But I realize now I was not being the Boss. I was extremely lucky.
And that luck ran out back in Nov. On an Ultra Classic, missed my turn, looking to turn around I turned into what i thought was a gravel lot but actually was dirt, gravel and sand. Totally misread the situation. Lost the front end in the sand and I did the exact opposite of what Robert teaches, I pulled in the clutch with the front wheel turned almost to lock and down we went. Silly me trying to keep it from falling tore my bicep out of my shoulder and also did other damage. None to the wife or the bike. Had surgery in December and am down and out for 3-4 months minimum. You can bet your sweet peas that when I get back in the saddle I'm gonna be doing lots of practice on these exercises. When I think I've developed some skillz maybe we'll see about getting Robert back up to NC for a session so he can humble me! So folks, don't be like me and fool yourself into thinking you've got it covered. If you can't do what he teaches then please, get busy and learn these slow speed maneuvering skills. Again Robert, Thanks for what you do. Much appreciated...a little too late!

The key is timing, and when appropriate, staying in the friction zone slightly. And of course, without practice, you’ll never teach yourself OUT of the awkward feeling just before you’re about to stop.
Timing: as you slow to a stop, you have to sync your right foot (enough pressure to halt the movement of the bike) with your left foot (on the ground at the same moment when the “halt” happens.)
Only practice will help you learn to “feel” what the bike wants to do (lean one way or the other), and how you coax it into doing what you want (shift off body weight, maybe a slight counter steer to shift the weight onto your left foot slightly.

I have had fellow riders say they don't see the point in practicing that exercise (turn with no lean) because they've never needed to go on a gravel road and don't plan on it. Interesting - tight u-turns are along the same relative occurrence as gravel roads, but people like practicing those. Maybe leaning just looks cool to them? Maybe folks think "why practice something that doesn't look cool?" Regardless, that exercise is incredibly useful and important. I don't like the idea of coming up to a gravel road and having to go another way because of lack of comfort with riding in gravel. Also, no-lean turns are a great way to work toward mastery of your friction zone control.
