In Round 2, Charlie would have matched the entire Match Game 98 panel with "Ball" because all of them would have used the plural (which I think was the intended idea of the question that the panel missed).
Yeah, he was AWESOME. sometimes it would come on and he'd be lying down on the stairs, or doing something comical. i miss him. I miss the line up of daytime game shows. now there are too many talk shows or Dr. shows. (no offense dr. oz..love him and love ellen, and meredith, but wayyyy too many. ) Used to have game shows and Phil Donahue. sigh. ahhhh the good old days!
I'm kinda glad he was part of this episode too. He actually seemed to enjoy himself on this one. Showed a fair bit of personality, which was nice to see so close to the end.
Fanny Flagg who wrote Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" which on the big screen was called "fried Green Tomatoes" Just a bit of trivia for those who may not have already known that. (she was also a comedic actress, in fact..that's how most of us knew her!)
I didn't know that, but...i don't see how that makes any difference to what i said. She still wrote that book, and she still was on match game a lot of time. Im not interested in her personal life at all. other than the fact that she mentioned a town she used to live in once on that show, and a friend of mine lived there as did Fannie Flagg. :)
+OutdoorLifeFamily Yeah, she was. She was a partner to writer Rita Mae Brown. Of course, she never publicly acknowledged it, the way things were in the late seventies, early eighties. She was one of my favorites on the show.
Charlie may have given bad answers, but Sue was worse because she didn't seem to understand how the game works. Give thanks to Charles and Elaine for saving the game and the day.
I think the wheel at the end is bull crap, you should pick whoever you want. Just because the other stars couldn't handle people always calling on Richard 🙄
"I hope you have some babies real soon," Rayburn says to her as she disappears - he really seems to be trying to top the celebs with the over the top treatment of the contestants
Bryce Landon It sure was. This reminds me of an earlier episode of Match Game PM. It was during its first season in 1975. The front end game had only TWO rounds then. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. They went to a regular tie break round, similar to the CBS daytime version (Match Game 7x (seventy something)). This tiebreak round ended with one contestant getting shut out while the other contestant got only ONE match. The contestant match Richard Dawson. It was the only match in the front end game, including the tiebreak round.
I would have been about 6 or 7 at this point.. these people always seemed CRAZY and FUN to me.. I thought.. who are all these crazy people? All i knew is I loved watching this game show as a kid.. it was sooooo different than any other. DA BEST
I think this is my favorite episode so far and I have watched more than a fair share of episodes. Charles was so funny I want to say he stole the show but it was great all around.
***** The same thing happened in episode 1173 of MG78. There was a baseball question. Men responded with 'chest protecter', ladies responded with 'bat'.
Although Richard Dawson did get the correct answer most of the time when it came to the question after the super match, Charles Nelson Reilly always matched everyone in the first three rounds!! Thats why he always had the Definitive Answer!
Gene had a great sense of humor when he said "We have a matched pair here". Then on Round 3 Charles would match them. Oh, and you got to love Richard Dawson's reaction. In the end, the contestant won $5500 thanks to Elaine Joyce.
Un Real ,, LOL .... I watch Match game bout everyday on BuZZr ,, I've Never seen this Episode .. They got where they play the Same week long series every 2 weeks .. GoTta Love Y_Tube

This episode was brutal but the guy managed to pull out on top. Not too shabby for a dood who forgot to take his smart pills 55 hundred bucks back in the day with a probably made him want to quit his job at NASA
Drunk. They shot 5 episodes per day. After the first two they took lunch where all the celebs drank. They are legendary for being drunk on the show, but Gene stumbles all over the place here, clearly 2 sheets to the wind. Must have been a mean drunk, if this is to tell.
If they can't play the game there (I'm a third of the way through this --- do either of them get ONE answer matched?!) --- why would these unfortunates want to bring home the free "Match Game" game?!
Sony ECM-51. It telescoped, but Gene liked to play with them which apparently caused them to break, so techs built one with a fixed piece of tubing that was used in later years. Bob Barker also used an ECM-51 at the time, but not telescoped like Gene preferred.

"I SAVED YOUR LIFE AND YOU DID NOT CALL ON ME!!!!" ~ CNR
What a riot!
Yeah, the dude never ceases to amaze me.
John Lang - sheer brilliance!
CNR was the most underrated panelist. He was also the one who helped the all-time winner.
This was a crazy episode and I love it. Charles Nelson Reilly was on fire on here.
He understood the point of the game: To match the contestants. Not to match the audience.
He was indeed "flaming!" hehe
Too bad he smokes so much. That pipe has got to go.
He's dead, you know. The flame has gone out.
Caterpillars turn into butterflies, too.@Yowza78
To quote Richard Dawson on an episode of Family Feud "How the hell did you people get on this show?"
"September-her-her-her"

Terribly
@@jenniferggreer457 By now you've probably bought a "smart" TV and watching reruns of the past game shows on Pluto TV (as I am)!
@@mikegross6107 lol ABSOLUTELY!!!!! love it!!
Only Gene Rayburn could get away with calling the contestants "weirdos".Still funny 40 years later.
Odd that he skipped Fannie saying she was stumped. That's a different thing here in Alabama.
All I can say is WOW!
Great episode!!
I’m surprised at the ending!
That was a great episode, thanks Match Game Productions!
This was my favorite game show as a kid-I always fantasized about being on it
No wonder Charles didn't have any kids....priceless
My favorite game of the 70's!!! True comedy hour!!! Hilarious!!!!
Gene all the stars were hilarious. Gene WAS the Match Game just like Bob Barker WAS The Price Is Right.
you are Right sir.
Erich Hoefert Just like Richard Dawson IS Family Feud.
And he made sure everyone knew it.
@ParaWarnerViacom-17 Enterprises, Inc. So is Alex now.
Baloney
18:05 Gene Rayburn grins 😂 when he says, “In your head” 😂
I awake early every morning to watch this game show. I love old game shows
Arminca Goodwin I DO,TOO! Since childhood!!
"YOU DIDN'T CALL ON ME AND I SAVED YOUR LIFE" LMAO!
Charles is love, Charles is life.
Amen.
your an idiot
@raylene purcell: That should be "You're" an idiot, idiot.
Charles is a character.
Charles is the wackiest guy
Gene hammered these two contestants - hilarious. And the tie-breaker! Half a loaf. He must have picked the question himself.
I use to watch match game when I was grade school, I loved it!
as did I. LOVED IT.
Now if only Buzzr airs episode of Match Game PM. Probably on weekends. I hope. 😆
How did they let you graduate from grade school without teaching you that "used to" is proper English?!
8:33 That voice crack is the best I've ever heard!
Intentional
Henny... PENNY?! I was certain it would be Henny Youngman.
That was my first thought too, but they did have rules for answers and I couldn't remember if names (people) were allowed.
I thought of Henny Backus, wife of Jim Backus ("Gilligan's Island", "Mr. Magoo"). She appeared on Gilligan.

I really enjoy seeing the final Dawson episodes as its rare to see him on the "new" blue set!

Okay...I love Richard Dawson as much as anyone, but why, why, WHY after that game would you NOT call on CNR?
Richard was definitely on a roll too, his best episode in a LONG time
This was shortly before he departed Match Game
He didn’t even wear those shades.
Good to see you uploaded this episode again
Given the contestants' answers, Gene is actually being gentle.
Charlie may have given bad answers, but Sue was worse because she didn't seem to understand how the game works. Give thanks to Charles and Elaine for saving the game and the day.
Sometimes the most disappointing contestants provide the show's funniest moments.
Best Match Game EP ever...
this episode is great!! love charles!
I wonder what the home game was like. Did six celebrities come to your house?
Yep; Paul Lynde, Howard Cosell, Billy Barty, Charo, Sonny Bono, and Howard Stern. :P

I loved CNR's "fanfare"
John Lang - Elaine Joyce should have done CNR'S fanfare for the big win at the end.
To be fair, those questions were confusing and strange :P
Boy you weren't kidding by worst contestants.
This was tough to watch, but the ending was well worth it.

Wonderful win Elaine! You are georgette on this wonderful Match Game!
This guy was lucky. The weirdo celebrities came thru for him in the end
Funny thing. If he hadn't been so bad he never would have thought of Henny Penny.

Yeah Elaine. I swear I didn't think old boy was gonna make it.
I wish that they would make a match game for the Wii! So that you can play it.
"I saved your life and you don't call on me!??!" LOL!
"Balls" was a good answer. So was shrunk. Half a "hour" is stupid!
I thought of half a brain...I was sure someone woulda said it on this episode lol.
What's wrong with half an hour?
The back and forth Neutral/Reverse was funny and all, but notice the men said Neutral, and the women said Reverse. Makes you think, huh? :P
I noticed that too. I immediately thought of neutral as well. Wonder if this is some kind of male versus female thing.
***** The same thing happened in episode 1173 of MG78. There was a baseball question. Men responded with 'chest protecter', ladies responded with 'bat'.
I thought of neutral right away too. Interesting about the genders.
Seems like times have changed ‘cause I said Neutral lol!
@@louisefontaine6856 Me too.

Dangit! What were the four words that would change my life?!?!?!
Lol

Nah, worst would be an episode that ended in a 0-0 tie, the tiebreak was all celebrities, and Gene mentioned they had to edit out two tiebreaks.
which episode was that?
I didn't see that one.

Great job Elaine! Love it!
Charlie's hair is something to behold.
He has better hair than the female contestant!
He kept the back really long, sometimes it was puffed up on the back of his head. Maybe he wore a ponytail.
Of the semi-regular panelists on "MG", Elaine was another favorite of mine.
Was that a one-of-a-kind microphone Gene used over the years ?
Sony ECM-51. It telescoped, but Gene liked to play with them which apparently caused them to break, so techs built one with a fixed piece of tubing that was used in later years.

Eyehate Phukingoogel Yes, there were others, but Rayburn and Barker were most associated with it.
Why did they skip Avery in the sudden death round?
Until Dawson's departure, only the regulars (Brett, Charles, & Richard) answered the Sudden Death question.
I still think Doritos every time I see Avery. ...and sometimes Galaxina.
