Did you know with certain Atari 2600 games, they will run faster if you apply more than 9V to the console? I found this out from having an after market power supply that could be set to 9 or 12v. Pitfall and a few other games will play faster, but not all because of the type of ROM they use. Some simple games like Pitfall only use the console itself to draw the game, to put it simply.
I doubt... 2600 games have to be in-sync with the beam of the crt tv to draw things on it since the console has no video memory. If you speed up the game, either the tv has to speed up too or it gets out of sync so only gibberish will be drawn so you can't play the game. ;)
