How To Nail Your Onstage Question And Give Good Pageant Answers While On-The-Spot, Under Pressure

- When I was 22 years old, I was a Top 5 finalist at the Miss America pageant. On national TV, I was unexpectedly asked about whether the United States ought to intervene in the Syrian conflict. Those 18 seconds made the difference between whether my legacy was going to be "Miss California is an embarrassment" or "Miss California knows her stuff." (Thankfully, the ball landed towards the latter: www.buzzfeednews.com/article/...)
Perhaps the most critical phase of competition that separates the winner from her finalists is the all-revealing Final Question And Answer category. This area can be difficult to prepare for, especially if extemporaneous public speaking is not your forte.
But the good news is that the best answers have a few simple qualities in common. They're not rocket science, and it's all 100% coachable...even self-coachable!
If you practice with these areas in mind, you will be able to handle any question or situation thrown your way. Good luck!
Great video as usual, Ma'am! As a former title-holder myself, I would add that "having reading habit really helps a lot in answering on-stage questions". It helps expanding your knowledge, building your smart vocabulary, and acing your style of delivering answer.
You are 100% right. I was mainly thinking of tactical component of the answer when making this video so I completely forgot this point 😅😂
Doing lots of reading setting your foundational background is super important. You really can’t “hack” or fake having a genuine understanding of current events.

I joined my work’s swimsuit pageant. I need to practice and prepare so much from the catwalk to the question and answer portion. Bless me luck! A lot of people are rooting for me to win. It’s going to be my very first pageant as well so I had to learn everything from scratch. Hope I really win 🥺

One, of my interviews, I joked with the judges. They seemed to like it.
Whenever I judge, I LOVE a contestant who can joke with us! It shows she doesn't take it too seriously and can be a breath of fresh air!

In the Philippines, letting the host hold the mic for you can be disrespectful.
There was a Filipina candidate who eventually became a meme online after she wasn't able to hold the mic from the host.

I applaud you for mentally preparing yourself to go through this process. A lot of people freeze up and don’t even anticipate that they will. Just yourself, take a deep breath, and push through it. Over time, you’ll become much more comfortable!

You’re so right Marc- I see you handsome, ambitious young men are here at my channel too! Please forgive me if my language in my videos seems targeted at just women. When I started my channel, I knew I wanted to have a very specific, targeted audience to help hone my message and it’s hard to get out of the habit of just talking to “one woman.”
The mic tip isn't across the board. I've seen videos where the emcee actually hands the mic to the contestant. This is something I'd ask about during rehearsal.

Hi Marcia - good question. Trust me, you’re not the only one! Honestly the best way to practice getting your answers to become succinct and concise is to time yourself. Have a friend or family member drill you questions and set your alarm for 30 seconds. Once you’re able to get down to 30 seconds, bring it down to 25 seconds. Once you’ve managed 25 seconds, you’ll get a feel for how long that is. Then work on getting it to under 20 seconds.
The alarm needs to bring audibly so you can hear it. The person drilling Q’s with you shouldn’t have to interrupt you :)

Hello Crystal san, how much the choice of language impact the judges and the performance overall , in a zonal level pageant. I am an Indian and we have Hindi as our national language. But we are all fluent English speakers too. I am wondering if using language other than English can have an impact in the overall scores.
My answer would be “I’m gonna throw up…I’m gonna throw up. “
