  • A tour of Limestone Permaculture Farm in New South Wales, Australia. Brett Cooper manages the 1-acre property as a productive farm helping to feed around 50 families. The tour includes a look at the orchard, caravan farm gate, chicken and duck areas, and shade house, and Brett talks about what brought him and his family to this complete change of lifestyle - in which they are thriving.

    Did I hear him right when he said his farm could feed 50 families? That's amazing! If 50 families were to bear equal responsible for taking care of a permaculture farm of that size, it would hardly cost any time at all. Permaculture community anyone?

      What an amazing accomplishment!! One of the necessary steps to reversing greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time providing people with clean and nutritious food! I'd love to see countless of these 50+ family feeding local farms near me within the next decade!
      All by myself and with few funds, I've started a 20'x20' vegetable garden in my parents back yard while working 20+ hrs a week and completing my senior year in engineering school. What he said is true, simple trial/error, some youtubing, and purserverence is all this takes to garden/farm like a pro!!!
      Nature wants to work with us :) let's all take charge and start planting today!!!

    The idea of the corrugated sheet metal placed around the trees to protect the trees from the sheep is something I have been searching for! I have some small sheep , Shetland Sheep, which I hoped could be used for weed mowing. But the sheep also like eating the bark off the trees, killing the tree. But then once the tree is shielded the weeds would grow inside of the shield. Then in this video I see how the chickens are incorporated to clean up inside of the corrugated sheet metal, and the metal keeps the soil from being lost when the chickens scratch around looking for bugs! :) A larger/taller wall of corrugated metal could be used to protect the trees from goats (much more of a challenge) in a similar manner, but leave a tiny restricted opening at the bottom to let chickens squeeze in to tend to the area next to the tree trunk.

    Love what Brett says here about trying to minimise your footprint, whatever your living situation might be, via all the little components of your life, such as growing herbs, how much you drive etc. Inspiring. My most recent changes are shampoo and conditioner bars, to reduce plastic use, recycling soft plastics using the RedCycle scheme and standing in a large trug when I shower, then putting that greywater on my garden. It all makes a difference.

    • @Lily-qb1xv
      @Lily-qb1xv 3 года назад

      Got a question for you; when using the shower water on your garden, does the soap runoff from rinsing affect the plants or the quality of the soil? I love the idea of saving shower water as long at there’s no significant drawbacks.

      I use fairly natural hair care products and mild body washes which are oh neutral, such as QV. I tend not to put this water onto green leafy vegetable plants that I am going to eat (just to be safe) but I've had no problems using it on all my other plants so far.

    What an amazing place you have, regarding airflow in summer, you could use old computer fans from a scrap metal yard. These can be powered almost directly from a photovoltaic panel, just use a voltage regulator to prevent fan burn out when panel output is very high.

    Thanks for sharing, I've grown tired of the 'dream garden' aspects we see on Australian tv. As much as I have commented on their FB pages, about wanting more on sustainability and permaculture, I find here what I am looking for. Although living in suburbia, I grow some food and will grow more especially now I am getting onto polyculture and square foot gardening. It is a journey and I I feel a peace knowing I am making more of the right decisions for a sustainable future.

    Great tip: have tin shield fence around tree bases so chickens can climb into them to weed and fertilize with their manure. Any soil they scratch up stays at the base of the tree because it hits the metal fence and falls back in.

    Love this...always inspirational to see what others are doing. 5 years ago we bought a home with a nice size backyard...put gates through to neighbors, got chickens, remediated the very 'sprayed with pesticide' soil with mycelium, put in 11 fruit trees, some berries and vines, raised veggie beds and veggie hugels as well as a herb spiral. We do lasagna gardening which makes it extremely low maintenance.... I also planted over 500 bulbs 2 years ago...gosh they're beautiful when they're all blooming. We also tried mushroom plugs in tree stumps (sadly without success) We're a 3 minute walk away from shops- so see's right it doesn't have to be away from everything. Have wonderful compost and worm bins and make comfrey tea. Built a wee cob cottage, a cob sitting nook and painted old water heaters and made them into benches or art pieces and also revamped an ancient old camper for guests. We love our backyard and all it produces, and the amazing birdlife that has re-appeared as we left stick piles for them, put in a garden pond and a few other water features. Next investment is big water tanks.
