The first engine 2045 was definitely Canadian built. That was built as an MLW M420 series locomotive. The other Canadian built engines were 3000 amd 3643, 3000 being a MLW C630M and 3643, being a M636. The other engines were American built Alco C425s.

Because sand is much more dense than grain. Less volume makes up full load limit of the cars.
