  • In this clip from the series premiere of SON OF A CRITCH, Mark sits with Ritche at lunch and discovers a world of flavour. Watch now on CBC Gem: gem.cbc.ca/med...
Based on Mark Critch's award-winning, best-selling memoir, SON OF A CRITCH (13x30) is the hilarious and very real story of 11-year-old Mark coming of age in St. John’s, Newfoundland in the 80s. It’s a heartfelt window into the life of a child - much older inside than his 11 years - using comedy and self-deprecation to win friends and connect with the small collection of people in his limited world. Filmed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the comedy stars Critch as his father; Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Pinocchio) as young Mark; and Golden Globe nominee Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as Pop. Additional cast members include Claire Rankin (Molly’s Game) as Mark’s mother, Mary, alongside newcomers Sophia Powers and Mark Rivera, classmates of young Mark.

    TRANSCRIPT:
No matter how badly I had it,
    Ritche had it worse.
    What stinks?
Oh my God, your lunch is disgusting.
    What is that, dog?
    Gross!
Is that what they eat back in China?
    The Philippines.
    He speaks.
    What'd you say?
    I'm not Chinese.
    I'm Filipino.
    The Foxes were not interested
    in the geographic segmentation
    of Asian countries.
The only way to get a couple of foxes
away from their prey was with better prey.
    Hey, guys.
So Ritche, want to trade lunches?
    Want some?
    Sure.
I was not used to food that had...
    flavour.
    The foods I was raised
on only had two colors white and beige.
Everything was boiled, you knew supper was
cooked when all the windows fogged over.
    Ahh.
    Guy's got a kick!
    Oh, thats nuts!
What the hell is in this?
    Finally a little pain
and suffering that I kind of liked.
    [Laughter]
    Hooo!

It's extra-funny after you've watched it in context and realize that the man leaning into the pot of boiling meat and potatoes (and coming up with his glasses fully fogged up) is the real Mark Critch playing his own dad.

I don't recall pancit bihon being spicy, then again we love spice, if there's a dish that ain't spicy just throw in a chilli and maybe some calamansi juice, and suddenly you emptied the kitchen.

Nothing wrong with the old white and beige foods! Grew up and still live off the stuff. Love the skit though.

Different type of comedy. Comedy doesn't actually mean funny, but that's the only kind of comedy people are used to nowadays. This is wholesome and heartwarming. The original comedy.
