I always assumed Los Angeles had a pretty active obscure movie & television videocassette collecting scene back in the 1990's. BTW, I'm pretty certain that Wayne Coyne based Yoshimi on Robin in the album art for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots in 2002!
Excelente channel. Congrats. I`m from Brazil and maybe Robocon aired here in the early 80s as some Japanese productions aired here and not in the US. But ever since I saw this clip it hit me as somewhat familiar. But it is probably just the overall 60s-70s crazy look many shows had in that period and I absorbed since a small child watching old reruns. But anyway, thanks for clearing it out for me. One of those small doubts we keep for years and years bugging us like an old scratch. :)
Maybe he saw the 1999 reboot Moero!! Robocon on Japanese TV while he was on his Japan Tour April 1999, and then searched out the original series while he was there.
Beck is of Generation X (b. 1970). And some members of Gen X tend to be nostalgic and have a love of kitsch. That's probably why he was drawn to Tokusatsu references.
If he mentioned the mister freedom french movie - which maybe he'd seen in france or a friend had, or maybe even he picked up... it could be the same story for Robocon, maybe he was in Japan or had a japanese friend who knew of it.
Thank you for hunting this down. How did Beck come across the tape? He'd been touring Japan since '94, so maybe there, but also just a general VHS trading scene that had been going on for years. Japan was certainly hip to William Klein and Gainsbourg for years. Pizzicato Five called one of their eps "Sister Freedom Tapes" and borrowed the look in 1996, etc.
I always wondered if that part was a Robocon parody but then I wondered why they didn't have a robot that looks like Robocon and I just assumed it was a generic tokusatsu parody.
I just found this! --> ruclips.net/video/yDNeBYbwDMc/видео.html I only see 2 Robocon episodes, but there's a ton of old Toei Tokusatsu shows. Just turn on CC.
Interesting. IMO beck must have had a Japanese assistant or friend. Or heres the thing the Internet back in 1999 wasn’t as reliable as nowadays but sometimes musicians come from really rich families. And rich people always have had several satellite dishes to watch world tv sometimes huge ones and multiple. whose to say Beck didn’t grow up watching all these foreign channels?
I'm currently looking for a practical way to get it online. I uploaded it to mediafire but the download time was like 3 hours. I will keep you posted and thanks for always commenting. I'm at the point where I can still keep track of my frequent commenters and really appreciate the support.
Your channel is excellent and deserves 100.000 subscribers now! I am big fan of tokusatsu.

Came into the replies to make this same guess!

Blew my fucking mind 🤯 HAS to be an homage!
Watching that scene from the Sexx Laws video when I was younger, I could’ve sworn that it was directly lifted from a piece of real 70s tokusatsu.
You come up with all kinds of interesting information.
Great video!

This is amazing thank you
I now unironically want to watch this show.
Wasn't Mojo Jojo's helmet based on Kagestar? Isn't Craig McCraken a huge weeb?

Beck probably didn't do that mich directing, but took credit for it amd the part he really did direct.
Did you ever end up uploading this anywhere? Would be fascinating to watch.

So I won't be able to find this movie? It's too cute. :(

0:27 Serge Gainsbourg at the piano. Beck is a fan.
(shot from the Mister Freedom movie)
I remember back in the day in the 90s this Italian girl I knew being into robocon. Maybe European countries had the movie. And maybe he saw it.
またロボコンを見る西洋人ってヲタクofヲタクだねぇこりゃ😅
