- It’s Halloween! And you know what that means? That’s right - another scarily terrible licensed game… or is it? Having delved into the world of child-friendly horror titles before, I had high hopes for this release. Games such as The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge and Disney’s The Haunted Mansion are unflinching in their conveyance of a dark and foreboding atmosphere in spite of their surprisingly lenient age rating (The Haunted Mansion especially - this game would surely be traumatic for a seven-year-old). Based on Neil Gaiman’s novella, Laika’s debut stop-motion feature sees the eponymous Coraline tire of her mundane life and venture into the unknown as she discovers a mysterious door to an alternate world, in which everything is suspiciously idealistic. As her intrigue compels her to return, she eventually (and quite literally) becomes entangled in a web of deceit, as she comes to realise that this alternate world is not as it seems. Naturally, since the movie boasts a dark theme and some indisputably nightmarish imagery, one would assume that the game would follow suit. So the question presents itself: is this a scarily good game, or just a complete and utter nightmare?

I still can't get over that when you say no to "Did you like the Coraline game?" you get 1 button, whereas if you answer yes, you get 2500 buttons. They straight up punish you for being brutally honest.

Hey could you make a review on monsters vs alians vs ps2/ps3 it's a pretty good game
Massive missed opportunity by not making the game be a little dull and monotonous in the real world then be really fun and creative in the other world to make the player feel like they want to go back to the other world for the more fun gameplay....instead of just making the whole thing boring 😅

I am literally terrified of the film and game. I saw the film in 3D when I was 8 and when I saw I was TRAUMATISED!!! My dad asked me how the film was afterwards and not wanting to seem scared I told him how good it was & he went on to BUY ME THE GAME. I played it absolutely terrified once and died a lot because I couldn’t get to grips with the controls which made it so much scarier. I eventually told him after a coraline related nightmare and to put my mind at rest he smashed the game disk with a hammer and put the remains in the (next door) black bin lmao.
Coraline falls into one of those movie tie in games where you wonder where all the creativity went, shame as well Coraline could have made an awesome horror/puzzle game, a lot of the game seemed like minigames and moving things around so you could get to different places.
I actually wonder how much time was spent just moving things around?
A lot. And it was particularly annoying during timed tasks considering how slowly she moves. 😂
I can't think of any better way to celebrate Halloween than with another giant spider alert! This is honestly the least surprising movie license game to have giant spiders.

As a kid i remember the game being incredibly eerie in the later half, i think it gave my sister some nightmares. Nowadays the "rhythm minigames" are just really funny especially with the fail animations
2009 was a very interesting and diverse year for animation, and this film is one of those examples of why, wouldn't ya say? :)

This game was such a missed opportunity… they had the perfect story to craft a kid’s version of a survival horror game and instead made a lame mini game amalgamation. Imagine exploring the pink palace in both versions while finding items and solving actually challenging puzzles akin to Resident Evil 1. The nightmare sequences are such an underexplored yet interesting addition too. Also the soundtrack?? It’s so amazing, almost like the whole budget went just into the sound design
Agreed, I really thought this game would amount to much more.
I know there are actually a lot of die hard fans of this game... and I am really curious as to what they are like. Seriously, I am incredibly fascinated as to the personality of people who really loved this game
I mean, someone made a game from what was basically a kids animated horror movie and in the game you do super boring chores.

The two ideas seem entirely in conflict. Knowing what the movie is like, why would you fall in love with a game that seems entirely in opposition of those themes?!?
Likely has to do with the fact you can play around in the movie's world, albeit with no fun game play. It's why I decided against buying the game 😂

Oh, Pac-Man world two I still have the game on the game cube I haven’t finished it yet but dude, me and my siblings would play nonstop with Pac-Man. Oh he should also do the Harry Potter license based games those are easy. And yes, I finally beat. Simpsons hit and run on Halloween and thank goodness I did because I won’t lie. The last final boss was a pain in my butt but I still gotta collect the cards do the races in the special missions

I don't know why but the button sequences in this game is kinda simple yet menacing simply because sometimes the game doesn't register whenever you press two buttons at the same time along with the d pad
I think it's more that you have to hit the button PRECISELY at the right time and they don't give you any leeway at all.

I find it weird this game seems to be aimed at the youngest of children, considering the movie it’s based off is considered one of the creepiest animated films (it’s technically a children’s film, but this game feels like it’s aimed at preschoolers at times)

Also I thought that they would do more with the video game adaptation of the Caroline. I watched that movie as a kid and it was pretty good. Well, at least game adaptation was playable even if the game itself isn't that good.

Hi! I got it from eBay actually. It's surprisingly rare.
I actually had this game as a kid... and still have it.
Weird story about it. So, I still have a slim silver ps2, and got an HDMI/AV junction box to get it to work. But I think the lens is dead because none of my PS2 games work... except Coraline. I have NO idea why.

I've never played this game before but MAN is this game such a disappointment. I wasn't expecting game of year or anything but boy did they drop the ball hard with this game.

I've played this game but only the Wii version. Watching you play the PS2 version makes the fact there was a Wii version VERY obvious imo since a lot of the minigames in the title are very clearly made for motion controls and don't translate super well to a traditional controller.
Not saying the game is somehow fantastic on Wii, just saying the game is clearly designed for that console.
Yes! I can see that myself, it would make a lot of sense that it was designed for that purpose.
