    This is why I think being a concept artist is one of the most hardest jobs out there. The amount of knowledge you need to know in design is staggering. From physics, biology, chemistry, mechanical engineering, architecture, history, psychology, entertainment, and who knows what else. You basically have to mentally build and display on paper something that can work and function or be living and breathing in the real world yet have to display it so that others can relate to it and find it entertaining.

      While concept art using any of these topics will be in demand, it's very improbable if not impossible to find someone who's a master of them all - usually we pick whatever topics interest us the most and focus on being very good at a handful of things instead of spreading our time too thin! Studios will look for the right artist for fill the role in the project they're looking to hire for :)
      That having said, it's good to have a base process that makes you adaptable to many prompts, some people can choose to be generalists as well!

    Thank you for telling the truth about what concept art is… vs. what other guys tell us what we want concept art to be, and where we want to be in it. I’m heartbroken, but grateful.
    I see no reward in what you’ve described as a concept artists job. Just long hours, drawing things you hate, for people who probably don’t care, to be told it’s not good enough.
    I’ve got some age, maybe even a little talent, and damn if I don’t love to paint. But what you’ve described in this video, as helpful as it is to other artists who want to be in this industry, just makes me want to give it up, pitch the computer and stylus out the window, drive to the coast and eat a bullet.
    But, like I said, I’m grateful you cleared the air around what the business is. Saves me a lot of time chasing what I felt like would be a great job, only to be disgusted and disappointed by what it really is.
    Now the harder job is to figure out what to do to replace the desire I had for it.

    • @TheHotaru93
      @TheHotaru93 Год назад +1

      I'm feeling very similar these days...
      I've been loving drawing and painting for more than a decade now, alnd I never doubted I would be making a living out of it. But lately the pressure is too hard, and even I'm questioning if I enjoy drawing anymore...
      I first pursued comics, and then I turned to concept art since it seemed a more feasible option.
      But the job is not artistic and rewarding as it seemed, is just as you described. And on top of that, competition is fierce with thousand of talented young artist fighting against you, and if that wasn't enough now there is fucking AI questioning whether even concept art is going to continue to exist in a few years.
      It is hell. For the first time in my life, I'm really considering if a normal job would not be better than all this pressure and frustration.
      Did you make something clear out of this situation?

    I have one *Question* that I think have been answered many times, but I think that your insight and opinion in this would help so much...
    *"How unstable is the Concept Design career in the video game industry?"*
    _I ask this because I've heard so many times that you can't think of money when becoming a Concept Artist, but not all of us have the privilege of "job/city/country hopping until we are 60 years old"_ and I guess I ask this also because I am an Immigrant outside USA and kind of know how tough is to start from scratch in another country, but if on top of that there is no job security, things would be a bit unbearable. Thank you!

    Can't wait to watch the next episodes ! I consider production painting kinda like a reward, you can showcase all the other designs that you did in a "screenshot of the game" type of camera, so it's normal to have this ratio of 20%/80%. The video has a lot of informations, might need to rewatch multiple time, that's cool you don't get everything just by watching once.
    The default requirements are so high, you need to know the fundamentals and have some nice drawing skills and even with that it's not enough, becoming a junior is hard, can't imagine skipping the steps to go straight to senior concept artist, lot's of hard work and design thinking, it's easy to get discouraged if you are a super beginner, but you can go back to episode 89 and just draw !

    I don't mean people that are trying to get a job. I mean people who already have experience and know what their work involves.
    When we search for "Junior concept artist [company] artstation" for example, we will find perhaps one in fifty portfolios that contain this. The point is that so many people got a job with a "wrong" portfolio and wades further into wrong direction, into this type of work (nice pictures). I know u mentioned it, but it is just mind bogling that so many people in the industry don't know what they do even after few years of work...weird.

      @@saipudinho1186 It can mean real politics like you said, but the term, as I understand it, describes more of the dynamic between team members, leaders and sometimes external parties as well. Just think about your school where you have achievers, power-grabbers, cheaters, leaders, thieves, bullies and so on, and workplace politics is pretty much all those and more. Terrible bosses, backstabbing colleagues, unreasonable deadlines, favoritism, budget reductions, unpaid overtime, 'that's our company policy', 'HR procedures', jobs no one wants to do but it lands on you anyway, finger-pointing, clients from hell... you get the idea.

    • @nomadic-mind
      @nomadic-mind 4 года назад

      @@saipudinho1186 No, not people discussing their political ideologies. In a bad organization politics can mean favoritism, bullying, cliques, and high school mentalities. Although it isn't always like this and greatly depends on the company and how toxic the culture is. In a good org politics has more to do with how well you can persuade and convince people to push a project a long making sure everyone is on board with a projects direction etc.

    Do we have to do the production panintings? Could someone become a junior concept artist without doing the production paintings? I suck at painting and that's something I need to work on

      @@paulatreides6711 Is just a lucky guess my friend ! But there is something magic about the city, Feng is there, Maciej, James Paick...everyone! name an artist, he lives in LA! But, there is in fact the tier top level standart with more then 500 studios based, and that scene comes into my mind... "Hey, there is this guy here from Brazil that do everything amazing but the cost to move him and bring him to LA is two times higher than a senior one and we be able to reach him in person 2 months from now due to the Visa process...(undefined period now with covid! But we have Gleamiarts here that is already in a couple blocks down us AND CAN BE IN THE MEETING TODAY! Well obvious business choices... why not hire him to warm up the idea and outsource the BR for the most prod. paintings as a freelancer? So it could help him in some way! But I agreed this was vague dude! I'm sorry Gleamy!

    You mentioned a QandA might be coming near the end of your vid so I'd like to propose a question if you end up doing one
    As an artist right now I have very little interest in designing characters, it doesn't interest me but I practice it here and there because it seems like I would need a bit of character design in a portfolio to be 'well rounded'. If it really doesn't interest me shall I just leave it out of my portfolio and focus on the work that I enjoy doing, or is it one of the skills that is expected of a concept artist?
