      Tell me about it. I'm from Germany and most games journalists here have a background in PC gaming, which somehow results in many of them judging games solely based on how graphically impressive they are. Which in turn means games like those from Nihon Falcom get practically no coverage at all over here.

    I actually really liked the dungeon designs, since the tight corridors and very precisely placed enemies and destructible objects are very conducive towards maintaining a high combo count (which speeds up your super moves charge rate) while simultaneously exploring everything, while also incentivizing killing enemies with the right characters and speed running, all of which go towards what rank you get for beating it (which incentivizes replaying the fairly short labyrinths until you get S Rank), which in turn helps you earn points for one of Kou's social stats that determine which ending you get (as well as getting some good prizes from his grandpa).
    It encourages a frenetic rush to beat each labyrinth as fast as possible while you're also trying to build up and maintain your momentum (that is to say, your combo meter), while also getting all the treasures and destructible objects (while leaving some unbroken on the first pass do that you can go and explore some alternate paths and have something left to keep your combo meter from resetting on the way back), swapping between characters depending on what the enemy's weakness is (and you might actually want to use something it's strong against first in order to build up your combo meter, then land a killing blow with its weakness for the rank points and extra loot) and also take advantage of the revive/regen offered to the character that is cycled into the support slot, and tossing out various super moves and long distance attacks which you can recharge faster the higher your combo meter is. Every aspect of the combat kinda loops back into the other aspects very nicely, I felt.

      @Sake Dup its $30 on amazon for the Vita release at the moment. Not cheap but I'm considering as I love Falcolm and as I was late to the vita scene I'm stuck slowly picking up games slowly at much higher prices than they were if I got them years before. Game looks great though. Still need many vita games and I only count physicals as you cant own a file. Sadly too many "mainstream" gamers are killing physical media with not only accepting and paying full price or more for a downloadable file, they are also accepting being nickle and dimed paying for context that should be included with the "full" version of games. No one should be expected to pay full or more price on any game if they cant hold/trade/sell it and it's sad people are basically telling dev's it's ok to pay full price for unfinished games be it physical or otherwise. It's very bad and will lead to being stuck with only the buggy and content lacking unfinished builds when the updates and dlc can no longer be accessed.
      Just had to get that off my chest. I love the Vita and will support it long into this next decade.

    TX was probably my favorite game of 2017 (with YS8 tied or just right behind). They took the great story format of the Trails series as well as their good writing (the story content itself could've used a bit more work but the way it was written was great) and YS's awesome combat system (mainly derived from older games like YS Oath in Felghana or Origins).
    With that said though there was 1 aspect that pissed me off and that was Aksys's piss poor translation of the game. On the PS4 it's not as bad but the Vita version is filled with grammar, mispellings, and contextual mistakes constantly from chapters 5 or 6 onwards (chapters before that weren't as bad and mostly the same to the PS4's translation but it takes a noticeable nose dive from that point onwards on the Vita), thankfully they fixed many of the most egregious issues in the PS4 release but even so it just makes it look like they just halfassed the Vita version because they didn't expect it to sell or they just got the PS4's rights at those chapters and started to focus on that version over the Vita and took google translate, wait google translate could do a more competent job than what they did, to the Vita version of the game). Falcom's only mistake was giving the localization to a shitty translator like Aksys since most of their other translations have been bleh as well, would've loved Xseed but the whole reason they went with other companies for TX and YS8 was because Xseed was too busy with other projects that we'd probably still be waiting for the game to come over.

      In this case, while they were almost certainly referring to "Xanadu", the pronunciation of that part of the title, which is spelled using one of Japanese's 2 100% phonetic written languages, is "Za-na-do-u."
      *That being said,* they actually pronounce it as "Za-na-doo" when they say it out loud, so it's probably spelled that way in the title because it looks cooler than what you would have to do to get their syllabic language to make a "Doo" sound, which would involve a little floating character between "Do" and "U" to remove the vowel in the first symbol. I don't have a Japanese font on my phone, but it would roughly look like this: "Za-Na-Do-¹¹/-U."

    As a person who does not play a lot of JRPGs (have played Trails in the Sky 1 and 2), this game was still fun. I'd say 7/10. Characters and story were passable, though the story was slow at times and was quite predictable. Character wise, Kou was easily the most annoying one, with his " I can please everyone" attitude. I've said "Shut up, Kou", more times than I can count. He wasn't bad in the beginning, but getting to the midpoint of the game or so, his annoying behavior starts to shine. My biggest complaint (by preference) for the story was that it was very PG - friendship beats everything. You'd think with the amount of times the monsters roamed around the city (unstoppable monsters, unless you have the right weapons), there would be actually be some casualties. But the amount of times Kou and friends arrive just in time to save each other or the people in the city was too damn high for my taste. But still, this game was a good time waster of about 55 hours.

      @JRPGFanatic  6 лет назад

      I understand where you're coming from. I like a good sad/depressing moment in a story but sometimes having light hearted PG friendship trumps all stories are a good change of pace. Glad to see you enjoyed it for the most part.

      jRPGFanatic I think not the right time for me to get it but I would be saving money for it. I wanted to buy it but its price is a expensive. The bosses may be a problem for me because it will take time for me to figure out their patterns. I hope it's not as punishing as Dark Souls.

      This game is definitely not as hard as dark souls, except maybe the final boss but it will also depend on the difficulty you play on. I expect the price to drop eventually but I do recommend getting the eX+ for PS4 or PC on Steam if possible.

    The combat looks really fun, albeit a bit simple, but it still has some mechanics that look interesting, like socketing your weapon. However, the high school portion looks incredibly dull, and I feel like, if I got this, I would be inadvertently rushing through it just so I could get to the actual gameplay. Relationship building isn't something I have any interest in, nor have I ever, and this game doesn't look like it would change that. It looks more like padding here just to make the game longer, when the developers should have made twice as many dungeons and maybe added some more to the combat.
    That having been said, how much actual combat gameplay is there in relation to the high school parts? Is it 50/50? Or maybe 70% dungeon, 30% high school? I just want an idea, because I may get it on sale and try it if it's at least mostly combat.

    Is there much difference between this and persona? Besides the fighting

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  6 лет назад +5

      Yes. Persona is a better game in all aspects. While Xanadu does contain some social aspects that mimic Persona, Social life matters much more in Persona and is more heavily focused on. In Persona, social stats are much more meaningful and focused on as it blocks you from certain activities with your peers while social stats in Xanadu just gives you some items and can be completely ignored. The good thing about Xanadu though, is that you don't have to worry about the perfect run or a schedule since you are forced to do a NG+ run if you want to see all the social events.
      If you're wondering about getting Persona or Xanadu, the choice would be to get Persona hands down. If you want a persona "clone", I wouldn't really consider this game that. It just borrows some social gameplay aspects from persona but on a very shallow level (when directly comparing it to Persona).

    • @SaraWDahl

      jRPGFanatic thank you! c: I think I will finish Persona 5 and 3, instead of getting this game then. The choice right now is between Tokyo X and Ys VIII. I watched your review on both games and I’m definitely gonna get the latter.

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  6 лет назад

      Waiting for a sale isn't a bad idea but there aren't really many high profile games coming out soon in terms of jRPGs that I know of. I don't know anything about the persona dancing games. Monster Hunter World comes out in a few weeks which might be good but that's not really a jRPG and Ni No Kuni II doesn't come out for another 2 months. It seems like you've already played Persona 5 and Ys 8 which I would recommend over this. Other than that you can play older games that are solid choices that came out this year and are pretty cheap like Nier Automata or Tales of Berseria. Or even play older games, although I don't know what you have and have not played.

I'm also playing FF Type 0 HD right now. Really liking the game and I plan on doing a review for it but the time management can take a lot of getting use to.

    That comment about sidequests confuses me a bit - does the general majority of JRPG-fans dislike sidequests? I always thought its about how they are implemented into the game system. Beyond that I think there are simply good and well-written ones and boring/bad ones.

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  6 лет назад +1

      yeah, it depends. I feel like "a lot" of jRPGs just have a bunch of side quests that don't really add anything to the story. Usually they're just fetch and kill quests with very little substance or reward. Sometimes they're just a bunch of activities to do in list format. A few games that immediately come to mind are Star Ocean 5, Sword Art Online (outside of character side stories), FFXV (except Tour quests), Shining Resonance and I even feel that way about the side quests in Octopath Traveler.

    I'd give it an 8/10. Had started as 9, but things like the dungeons getting a bit samey, the game adding slightly annoying platforming, the weak after story that felt a bit like an extended replay of the final chapter and Kou's catchphrase kinda degraded it for me, to an 8.
    Still enjoyed it a lot though! But CS 1 and 2 will always be better games for me.
    -maybe till I get into Ys.-

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  5 лет назад

      Haven't played CS 1 or 2 yet (will get to it once it comes out on PS4) but I think Xanadu is probably the weakest IP they have, at least out of their more recent line-up. Ys VIII was very well made, combat was great and the story and characters were appealing. That was an awesome game. So far from what I've played of trails in the sky, I only expect great things from CS. Tokyo Xanadu felt like it was lacking all around and didn't really excel at much. It's great that you enjoyed it for the most part though.

It’s American/English kids and western high schools. Instead of your standard trope characters that will definitely show up on a jrpg like stuco president, childhood friend, school nurse, older or younger sister. How about standard American tropes Like your Athletic sports guy, your pop culture geek, etc. (think of the power rangers movie but without the rangers power and more of persona-ish powers and story?)
