  • Learning and development leader Dr. Shanita Williams explores what happens when feedback is continuously absorbed like a sponge. She asks us to consider a more selective, and perhaps far more productive, way to process the feedback we receive and, ultimately decide to keep. At the core of all her work, Dr. Shanita Williams is most concerned about the human experience and how to help others live life without limits.
Shanita has extensive experience and has been creating learning experiences that increase knowledge, change behavior, and drive employee growth and development at all organizational levels for over a decade.
Knowing the daily challenges mothers face when trying to balance work, school, and family, Shanita conducted researched called, “She Made It,” where she explored the lived experiences of working mothers as students. The research revealed powerful stories of triumph and resilience, which became the inspiration to create a platform to explore these experiences more formally. In 2016, she became the CEO and Founder of Momploydent Inc., a non-profit organization committed to helping working mothers excel academically.

Thank you Shanita I now feel better about feedback because now I can use the information to access the situation without thinking I'm judge.

A great lesson, thank you! It is so easy to get caught up in our own insecurities; sometimes feedback can help dispel some of those self-doubts, and sometimes it can give us food for thought to improve ourselves and ways of thinking.

This was so helpful. My boss really enjoys giving public feedback because he views it as a way to put the employee on the spot for an honest response to him. This will help me to feel less anxious when being critiqued openly among my peers. Thank you!

Thank you Shanita this was very eye opening, and real. I needed to hear this because I often hold on to things that's not good for me. Now I have a way of straining out the negative feedback and keep what's best for me.

Hi, Shanita, This was very inspiring, and confirming for me, especially about the sponge and strainer, I choose to believe I am a strainer.

If we take the feedback with an emotional act then we never can process it! only with reason/logic and a constructive view we can change. Not taking feedback personally, we can move forward.

I thank you for your helpful advice. I usually say thank for your feedback when I receive them from surrounding people. However, my mind react to feedback negatively and I used to sit in a room lonely and look down myself. Thanks for your strategy that it is good to let feedbacks go. Receive feedback--> Learn from it --> Discard.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my talk. Feedback can easily send us into a negativity spiral that can leave us feeling bad about ourselves. When we take control of the feedback experience, we are able to to learn from the feedback but not dwell on the feedback. I am so glad to hear you feel like you have a strategy that that can help you in that quest! Best of luck to you!

Wow! This was awesome! I've never thought of applying the "strainer mentality" when receiving feedback. I think that would help me not be so hesitant to move forward and instead excited about it because I have new tools to improve! Thank you! Hope she does one on giving feedback in the future.

From watching this video about the sponge and strainer mentality when it comes to processing feedback, I see now that I was using the sponge method. This method has led me to be overwhelmed and stressed. I have the feedback from my schooling at SNHU, just starting a new job, new relationship and an old relationship that I have to entertain because of my daughter. Feedback is everywhere. I will from now on use the strainer method, examine, process and discard. Thank you Shanita!
