Had a close friend recommend Stoner to me and I was oddly sceptical about reading it. Couldn't have been more wrong! What an incredible writer John Williams was, and sadly underappreciated.
I picked up Augustus a couple of days ago and steamed through it at a rate of knots! I couldn't believe how different it was and yet, in my opinion, just as good.
I cannot wait to get Butcher's Crossing because I have total faith it will be fantastic too.

I couldn't find a way to explain why someone would love it...I just kept saying, "Try it, you'll like it!" But you really eloquently talk about why it's such a good story. Brava! I read Stoner based on your recommendation. I spent the first half frustrated at William Stoner, until I had an aha moment. John Williams deliberately hammered Stoner’s extraordinary life full of highs and lows into a flat factual and monotone recounting of an ordinary life. The story becomes a tale of devaluating education and academia in North America. Stoner’s passion for literature and teaching are beaten down to insignificance while the tragedies of his life are conveyed with dispassion. John Williams sucks the life out of Stoner while education and academia become irrelevant to the world around him. A truly brilliant book.

Wonderful analysis! I wish I had thought to talk about that angle. I might've been blinded by how realistic that seemed. I'm so happy you thought it was brilliant! I think it's common to have a slow, frustrating start with the character before becoming captivated by the story. I'm honored you picked this up based on my recommendation!
