Wow! This seems like a book destined to be read by you, Allen. Your passion for Augustus has me wishing I had it here with me right now to start reading it!

It makes me so happy that you absolutely adored this book! Augustus is my favorite Williams thus far, but I have greatly enjoyed everything I’ve read by him, especially considering they’re all so different, setting wise, but consistent with his incredible prose.

I finished this book about 5 minutes ago and jesus what a book. From the first few pages, Williams managed to make me feel so invested in this man from 2000 years ago. And it maybe has the most beautiful and enticing prose I've ever encountered.

I think you've found your lane. The passion you show is just too real. The fact that you have a very good background in these subjects shines through during your reviews. This was fantastic, keep up your amazing work.

Brilliant review, Allen!!! I couldn't be happier that Jimmy gave me the push to read Stoner and you got me to read Augustus. Funny how I found a new favorite non-fantasy author from my fantasy-focused BookTube friends. Can't wait to discuss this with you!

I didn't know a lot about this part of roman history, But I gave it an easy 5 stars. After watching this review I want to reread it even more!

I agree. I enjoyed this book, mostly for Julia’s “finding herself” section & her dad protecting her but the entire thing was all the stars.

I'm sold on this one. I'm trying to get more into Roman history this upcoming year, with Robert Harris Cicero trilogy, and also have a few other books I'm looking to get into: The First Man in Rome (Colleen McCullough) and A Pillar of Iron (Taylor Caldwell).

I watched this review while being in the middle of the book, and now watched it again with better context (knowing very little about the battles of Philippi and Actium in part I made it so I had to read articles online that would help me better understand the different roles the characters played in those civil wars -- and I would indeed mix up characters such as to whom Marcella and Vispania were married to 😅). I know I will also reread that book at some point, thank you for bringing to life so many themes I wouldn't have thought about that deeply otherwise: you can't legislate the human heart, poets and philosophers are necessary in society... You know already enough of my thoughts from your live discussion, but I still wanted to tell you your review is absolutely brilliant! ☺️👏

I was about 2/3 through Book 2 when I watched this review, so I skipped around a bit to avoid spoilers, and I heard you saying that you "didnt like Julia because she was always thwarting Octavius" and I thought you SUCKED. Im so glad I came back to this review to realise I took you completely out of context hahahhaha
I've loved Stoner for many years, and decided I wanted to read more of Williams, but hadn't ever looked into what else he'd written. I picked Augustus up from a second hand store with no knowledge of Roman history, and absolutely devoured it; it's easily one of my favourite books of all time, alongside, if not above, Stoner.
I read Augustus in a break from reading some of the Greeks, and it convinced me to continue my break to read some Horace and Vergil first. I'm forever indebted to Williams for giving me such human portraits of the poets to think about when I read their words. Likewise for all the characters in this book that I would have struggled to care about in a historical tome.
I really loved this review :)

It’s so fun to see how much joy and excitement this book gives you 😄 I’m still working out my final thoughts on in, but I do also love all the themes and almost “morals” Williams gives you. For me, the subtitle of this (at least books 1 and 2) should be “the tragedies of following your heart” 😅 Can’t wait for the live discussion!!

You make it sound so great, but yeah, I always hated history and most of my history covered the US, which has the most boring history ever IMO, so I don't know shit about the Roman empire :D
