Candy Says (Immortality Version): • [Immortality] Candy Sa...
My last Immortality explained video had a rather large question slap bang in the middle: Who is The One?
It's the question everyone's been asking since Immortality released. Are they a vampire? Spirit? Extra-terrestrial being? When it comes to Immortality explained, I finally have as close to a definitive answer as we're going to get, thanks to The One herself: Charlotta Mohlin.
Charlotta was kind enough to sit down and let me pick her brains about all of Immortality's burning questions: Who is The One? What is the relationship between The One and The Other? What really happens to Marissa Marcel? So, a huge thanks to Charlotta for helping me out :)
And EVEN then, Immortality still has an air of mystery surrounding it. That's why it's one of the most fascinating videogame stories I've encountered and undoubtedly a game of the year contender, in my eyes. If you want Immortality explained in terms of its plot (film-wise and character-wise), be sure to check out my previous video: Immortality Story Explained, Narrative Analysed: • Immortality | Story Ex...
As always, thanks for watching :)

Hi! Welcome to my channel. I do videos about video games, breaking down stories and analysing their narratives to discuss the ways games can tell stories that other mediums could only dream of. If you like deep dives into videogame narratives, please check out the channel! The videos are at least above average, I can promise you that - somewhere between mukbangs and hot tub streams in terms of quality (no one can compete with a good hot tub stream).

It was wonderful talking to you! 🥰🥰
Thank you so much, Charlotta! 💙
I genuinely hope you win an award for your performance.
@@Sm0k3turt amazing performance. It's quite a shame that if she receives an award it would spoil a great portion of the narrative. It was a big shock the first time I see her on screen.
@@fabitoselajuega it wouldn’t ruin the surprise by at least mentioning her.
Your performance was outstanding! I was so impressed, the One felt so nuanced and powerful and incomprehensible. You did an amazing job channeling that energy. Thank you so much for your performance and for taking this interview!
It's really mind-blowing to think that, when you watch, for example, certain Two of Everything clips in the game, you're watching Manon Gage playing The One playing Marissa Marcel playing Heather playing Maria
That's like 5 of everything
i know this is a year old but just wanted to point out my favourite: at the start of ambrosio, you’re watching manon gage playing the one playing marissa marcel playing the devil playing matilda playing rosario.
When the line “I’m a part of you now” was first said, there was initially a sense of dread cause she scared me, but after sitting with it, I thought of how the media and art we consume becomes a part of us, whether big or small.
I’m excited for The One to be in the next Smash Bros.
Their final smash would be them singing "Candy Says" for 6 minutes.
Immortality on the Switch? Sounds like a novel idea.
The acting in Immortality was phenomenal. The game could not have worked as well as it did without good acting but they went above and beyond, especially in Charlotta. She embodied the creepiness and subtle rage that it was incredibly captivating to watch. I hope the cast are recognised for what they did and I hope to see Charlotta in more stuff soon!
Thank you!
In one of the clips of Ambrosio, Marissa says: "When you're sat in the theater, the light that hits your eye, it's part of this chemical chain that reaches back to and touches my skin.". I've been wondering if this is a reference or foreshadowing of The Other being reborned within Amy Archer.
That's how I interpreted it!
The really funny thing is, having only clips of her responding to questions we don't see is exactly the format of the previous game Her Story. So perfect!
I loved your first video on Immortality but holy heck this is a follow up. thank you. it was excellent. and the flow of you adding in the interview clips actually seems fortuitous, it worked perfectly.
ah cheers 😅 thanks for watching!
I played Telling Lies or, let's say, Her Story and thought I was 'prepared' for what I'm gonna get from Immortality. 'Another FMV-like game that tries to be philosophical, maybe providing some thought-provoking mystery in a meta way', I mumbled to myself while game files were downloading.
Well, I just regret I didn't go fully blind but I wasn't spoiled enough to mess it entirely and still managed to get more than a few "OH WHOA WAIT WAIT WAIT" moments through the game. Also, decided to play it with controller (I can't get a hang of playing good with controller for my life, keyboard and mouse for... life, I guess) because rewinding mechanic felt just so natural and THIS other mechanic thing (which I'm not gonna spoil!, if you played it through then you know what I'm talking about) makes the whole process more enjoyable, if it's a right word.
Also, performance of The One was just... otherworldly. It combined pure beauty and hauntingness flavoured with existential dread, oh and also with this uncomfortable feeling that somethings's wrong and maybe you are looking at this right now but don't truly see... And THEN... What an amazing experience. It really makes you re-think certain things and it definitely made me realize how starving I was in matter of art that touches soul (not using this word lightly) and games that are remarkable. Yes, 'otherworldly' is an EXCELENT word to put in this sentence when it comes to choice of the cast. ;)
I got chills (or should I say: frisson, similar that you get when you are listening to some emotional music) and it was definitely more than memorable. it's a part of me now...
Unfortunatelly, I can't recommend this gem for a lot of people because it's so unique, I just know they are not going to dig deep enough to let Immortality hit - even at the surface level. It's definitely not a game for everyone and contains disturbing imagery plus I can understand it's more than hard to understand at times, even harder to fully comprehend after reaching 100%. And maybe that's why I'm glad I stumbled across this title - but also want to forget-it-and-play-agan-for-the-first-time so badly...
I'm definitely searching for other video game experiences like this or really innovative ways to tell certain stories; if someone has an idea, please let me know through a comment. :)
great stuff, shout out Charlotta as well. this game had me so confused yet so captivated at the same time. your past 2 vids have me just as captivated and explained so much. bravo
Loved both videos and your analysis. I still felt scared of her even while watching her in this interview lol. Pretty awesome you were able to get in touch with her for an interview. Thanks!
I was tempted to ask her to do a classic 'The One' death stare on camera but chickened out 😅
Thanks for watching :)
Immortality deserved to win at least one of its 3 nominations at the Game Awards. An astonishing piece from Sam Barlow. Bravo on two very well made and written videos on the game’s structure and narrative. Many interpretations can be made about the game indeed.
I am so so happy you did this follow up video. Your previous video was absolutely incredible up until you got to The One. Now the two videos together are amazing and you have captured the whole game perfectly! Really well done.
Okay I'm at 2:00 and I've noticed a horrid missed opportunity to put up a collection of disconnected answers from Charlotta to your mute questions to create a Sam Barlow mystery.
Bro who are you? I don't know what I was hoping for when I searched for a breakdown, but man this and the other video was a great way to finish that mental journey I just went on with this game. Great content!!
Your previous video, while charming and well put together, missed enough for me to cut out a minute into "The One" section. I left disappointed.
This one more than made up for it. Thanks!
I'm so proud of you for overcoming your feelings at the end of the first video and pushing past your discomfort!
The Other One says they're responsible for the Serpent and the Apple too. So it goes beyond Jesus. I think the question I have is did the others of their kind find a way to become more, or did they just die?
I don't know how to praise you, amazing work
I can only try to imagine the time and effort that must’ve went into both of your video’s but pleaseeeee I need you to interview more of the cast members. Marissa/ Barlow would be so awesome!
Have you ever played Soma? That would be a good one to break down and analyze
Amazing! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to uncover this wonderful game ;)
Cracking stuff. Glad you revisited this
Immortality build its own story and world and it left an impact on me.
On a smaller scale you did the same, Sam Gowing.
Thank you!
ah, thanks! and thanks for watching! :)
Great video! And really good interview you got!
SO amazing you got this interview! Such a great video and I've loved your analysis of immortality and scorn so far!
Outstanding work. Thanks for this.
Really enjoy your videos, and appreciate the effort you put into them. Thanks
This channel deserves more for the amazing quality it puts out!
Wait a minute, you had filming issues when trying to interview the actor that played The One?
Is this video DLC for the game?!
Excellent video, i really enjoyed playing this game and you videos have been a great companion piece for it.
the quality of your content blows me away! so thoughtful! I found your channel after playing outer wilds and now I can't stop watching your videos even of the games I haven't played! awesome work.
Thanks for making this video! Between this one, your previous Immortality video and some of the comments, I think I have a handle on what this game was about.
What a great video. Really helped me organise my thoughts concerning The One. Should've had a notebook to write things down while playing the game!
Immortality is such an interesting game. Both of your videos were really good and i really liked your first theory about the one! :)
I just got to the rolling credits about an hour ago. This game is definitely something else. Your 2 videos helped me understand it a whole lot, so thanks for that. There are still some things that I haven't fully understood or pieced to together in my mind's image just yet, perhaps 100%-ing the game will give me the full satisfaction I need.
I hope u continue making videos u r really talented, ambitious and awesome
Thanks for this little series on the game. As I said in my other comment, I just rolled credits on Immortality yesterday and it has accomplished it's goal, it's totally infested my brain. The interpretation you land on here hews pretty close to my own, or at least the one I think I'm formulating over time. I actually see my thoughts on this game veering pretty close to how I think about Inscryption a year later and how I feel having written and produced content on that game. These games both make me think on how a cultural artifact, a work of art might imply to us that it has sentience, an awareness of it's own ending, and that laments that it will only go on living in the ways it has affected us now, how that might change the world as we see it going forward, immortality yes, but foregoing the joys of emotion, awareness, self or physicality.
So thanks again. I really felt like I needed to be picky with the content I consumed about this game after the fact and I feel like I made the right choice. Shout out to The Besties podcast for pointing me in this direction.
See if you can talk to Manon, because I think it would be interesting to hear her side of the making of the game.
Fantastic, loved this interview and the previous video, really helped bring some things into focus!
Now I just have to find the clip you showed in this video at 8m35s where The One meets Marissa for the first time dying in a field, as that's the only clip I didn't recognise and probably the one I need to get the last achievement!
You nailed it this time! Great video!
I had help :)
@@samg0 I hope you can get an interview from the other Sam 😊
Oh wow, I just realised, that I missed like half of the game and most of the "The One" Plot, even after seeing the credits. On PC it's apparently not enough to rewind to trigger every "The One" Scene. Some "The One" Scenes were like in the background and I thought that's how they are supposed to be, because other "The One" Scenes were on their own by just rewinding. Throughout your whole video I was wondering, how you got all those clips. After the video I went back in the game and tried different commands... You have to use the step commands like "," and "." to properly see the "The One" Scenes.
Now I feel equaly stupid and frustrated. No wonder I was confused at the end and didn't get what happened.
Thank your for this video. Now I have to play the game again. Or at least the parts that I missed.
Thank you so much for this video ! As a busy father always lacking time and therefore feeling guilty playing video games, I kind of rushed Immortality, and didn't take the time and the effort required to really understand what I was looking at (and now I feel guilty for that too). I "unblocked" enough clips to reach the "end" of the game, but I hadn't got a clue about all the layers and meanings and the genius behind this wonderful video game/interactive movie. This is so deep, and your videos enlightened me so much about the true meaning of this masterpiece. Your own words and reflexions are brilliant, very insightful and the perfect continuity to this incredible game. Thanks a lot for your work !
Both videos of yours are excellent!
thanks so much :)
Hey! Great Video. I've finished the game yesterday and there was one other thing that confused me: I'm pretty sure when you click on the one's face or the other's face the game will cut to people they posses at that point in time, but with the one, it sometimes cuts to robert or sofia. Not sure how that fits...
Ah yeah good spot! I noticed that too at the time but forgot about it. Will need to go back and check if that fits in with my theory
OMG, I'm gona really enjoy this!
The Animal Crossing music in the beginning threw me off. I was trying to figure out where it was coming from.
the Crossing vibe is hard to beat
This story is amazing. Nice vídeo
Incredible video on a masterpiece of a game! I wondered, I must have pretty much every clip, but cant for the life of me find the clip you have in your video of The One consuming Marissa in the field. Any clues u might be able to offer? Keep up the awesome work on the channel! 👌😊
Thanks for your videos, really helped clear some things up. I wonder about Sofia, it seemed there was more to that story.
I think the first video is a great breakdown of the THREE films but misses the mark by a pretty wide margin when trying to tell the ones story. But this video does a fucking amazing job at it. Both videos are very very good and you've gained a new fan and I look forward to watching your catalog.
Thank you for these videos. I've been listening to several people talk about this game recently and honestly could remember very little (except boobs.) Playing it all night on release seems to have affected my memory of it. But I remember being enthralled at the time. Your videos not only reminded me of the story but also highlighted several parts I missed.
Great video!!!
Fantastic job man. So many questions in my head playing this and you made sense of a lot of things. My question is about when the one consumes Marisa is France. At first I thought it seemedl like this was done out of kindness to prevent her from suffering while at the same time being able to take advantage of a young and beautiful body. I think a little bit more analysis needs to be done on their conversation though. In French doesn't Marisa say that she wants to live forever during this convo? Or something along those lines anyway. You brought up the question about how much of Marisa was left while being possessed/used by The One and I have that same question. Obviously Marisa knew that the black male she was talking to in the field wasn't human, or she wouldn't have asked him, "What are you"? So either the one somewhat explained the process of her immortality and how she possess people as a way to promise her a method to an eternal life, or told her these things to comfort her prior to consuming her, knowing it would end her life, and thus tricking her into thinking she would serve a greater purpose. The one also says at one point that she took her into a barn and "devoured her". The word devour would leave me to believe that there was no Marisa left after the consumption and maybe The One just saw her as a sweet innocent (and already dying) victim and wanted to end her suffering while giving her comfort in addition to being able to use her body.
Kinda leads me to another question...why was an immortal bring using a black males body in France during WWIi? If she sympathizes with humanity I'd have to believe that she was helping Jewish people seek refuge? And a black male dressed as a farmer would be a good appearance for that? Kinda makes sense that she turns her attention to art as a way to make humanity better after seeing so much death and destruction of the human race already. Man I'm overthinking this, but all of this was just so unsettling.
In some scenes, if you zoom in on The Other, it takes you to "Satan" from Ambrosio. I still don't know what that means, but it's probably not literal.
Great stuff 👍
great video!
This game is a piece of art.
I rolled ending credit, but still not open whole video clips.
Thank you for show me So good Video to understand.
i never saw the scene where the one and marissa first meet! how do i get that? i heard her describe first meeting marissa.
Original video breaking down Immortality's film synopses and the story of Marissa Marcel: ruclips.net/video/OSHTf6ddpVE/видео.html
Thanks for watching 🧡
Wow incredible how did you get her on but wonderful Content, wonderful game.
In which clip can the (reverse) black and white video be found that is featured in your video? The one where The One explains a lot. I think I haven't found that one yet in the game. Thanks in advance!
My mind was blown yet again OwO
Fitting that you would accidentally reenact the premise of Her Story
The most profound thing is in the final scene, the burning. If you keep scrubbing back and forth, going down several layers, you get to a close up of "the one". She just looks at you for ages, staring right down the camera the whole time, but then at the end she just says "I see you". The scene ends, and when it pauses, you get the cello sound indicating there's more to see... but I kept scrubbing back and forth and couldn't get anything. So I just let it play in reverse. Oddly enough, the words "I see you" in reverse sound like Christ! So I just kept scrubbing back and forth loads of times, hearing "I see you, Christ!"

Charlotta Mohlin was fantastic in this. Shortly after I found her first few scenes I began to mostly overlook the storylines of the 3 movies in pursuit of her and the other. It's like a 4th film hidden within (or 5th, if you consider the depiction of the director/writer and actors as another film of their own).
are you ever gonna do a followup to this?
One good theory I've heard about 'who' or 'what' The One and The Other One are are Muses: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muses
Do you have any plans to interview Manon Gage?
Nice hair cut!
I think Marissa Marcel died when she consumed John. One of the themes of 2OE is that Maria and Heather look alike, but they're not the same character. Likewise, I think that the One consumed a different person that looks like Marcel. How could she bring her back otherwise.
Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound
That calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it:
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
I watched all of Charlotta's interview videos in reverse and...nothing. Very disappointing.
Not sure how "The One" screened the earlier films of the first director to make her decision regarding his suitability, since they didn't have cable TV, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, or streaming back then.
Physical film reels, I would guess.
This is what made me a bit sad about the whole narrative, because the meta-narrative with The One, sort of destroyed a piece of the career of Marissa because of it. I wouldn't say that it makes the game worse, but I liked the whole following of Marissa all the more, and felt the whole "The One and The Other" narrative was quiet cliche. It's well executed, but personally it was a bit "meh".
It also negates a lot of what you can think on about Marissa's career in general as well, since you can't really tell how much is the One, and Marissa herself, which is quiet a pity, since atleast to me, there's more nuance in the "hollywood actress consumed and spat out" going from the innocent girl, to a more lustful hungry character that becomes her own destruction. Same with Carl seemingly being gay, but having to hide his true feelings for John, and John being more and more disillusioned with Marissa, as her own destruction pushed him away. There's more human interpretations at play, and I feel like the meta-narrative cheapens the experience a bit.
However, that is not to say that it wasn't well executed, and perhaps it's more of a preference to me.
Interesting game, nonetheless.
The version of the song she lip synced wasn't the Velvet Underground version. Definitely written by, but not their version.
Yeah. I can't find the exact version online but the closest seems to be this cover by Anthony and the Johnsons -- ruclips.net/video/n35yiLa18R8/видео.html -- such a powerful rendition.
@@samg0 On spotify, Candy Says - Live (Lou Reed) is the closest you can find. Anohni is who is singing that version.
First
ahh, i see it'stwiged for you now :)
I'm sure this has been said a million times, but it seems like The One and The Other are muses. I know this must be wrong because it is what everyone would first think, now I just need to know why.
I think that the game hinted heavily that The One and The Other inhabited Jesus, Mary, Adam and Eve, among others.
The one and the other one are the sendril, the parasitic organism that live in the dark mist. Lol
Corrections:
The Bible is certainly not the oldest story ever told. It was preceded by many other mythological books and stories, many of which were literally copy and pasted into it. Nor is it the greatest - it is quite banal and badly written by all literary and artistic metrics we have. If it wasn't such a cult classic it would never have been mentioned in literary circles.
Also, the game doesn't suggest to "throw the Bible out" simply because it tries to integrate its events into the narrative to make a cool mythology for the game world. Not more than Tolkien did by crafting a cool mythology that has nothing to do with the Bible and that demonstrated alternative godly beings. Quite annoying how religious people think everything is about them.
What about Mary and Jesus? Are you trying to suggest that the game's narrative conflicts with history? Because Mary or Jesus are not historical figures anymore than The One is (though you could argue that Jesus is based on a few different people who actually lived. Maybe).
Finally, even if the game would have thrown the Bible out the window, whatever that means, how is that in any shape or form affect its artistic quality? What's wrong with that, objectively speaking? That's a prerogative of whoever writes a story.
can't say I've ever heard someone call the Bible a cult classic before
@@samg0 lmaooo rip, my guy Nimrod living up to his name
@@samg0 well, considering the difference between a religion and a cult is only its size I think it's not that big of a leap.
@@MacBackwardz What can I say? I just really dislike religion lol
