I use mine with my M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16" and it works flawlessly. With Apple's Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter there's no need to download any app whatsoever, it works perfectly. Honestly the only thing I dislike is the amount of glare, it's huge. But otherwise it's great, beautiful colors and impressively well made.

Using a Thunderbolt Display with a 2021 M1 MBP and just can't bring myself to replace it. Still looks great and works like a champ. The TBDs were built like tanks. If you NEED 4K/5K then by all means do that, but if you're using a computer for general office tasks (email, Web, word processing, etc) then 2K is plenty good. You can rock two 27" TBDs side-by-side for less than half the cost of a single Studio Display... and it's still Apple... and it still looks good in 2023.

I still use my Apple Thunderbolt Displays. Was considering upgrading but after I looked at the new Studio Display it's not that much better to justify spending $1600. Even as a video editor and color grading. It would add more screen real-estate and brightness, but for video color correcting and sharpness, it's really not as big of a difference as I thought it would be. I plan on keeping what I have longer, maybe upgrade if Apple makes a 32' Studio Display or an HDR 120Hz display. If you already have one, I don't think it's really worth upgrading unless you really need it.

I have new M1 Mac Studio and this Thunderbolt display works perfectly with all controls working. No need to download anything for control. Only thing required is the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 (USB C) adapter, which you show. I bought this display of course used last year on FB Marketplace. Not one scratch on it. After a month bought another one, an extra in case something happens to it (as insurance). For potential buyers, marks rub off with a cloth that is wet very lightly. I learnt about cleaning this display on another RUclips video here.

The 24" Apple Cinema Display connects via a mini display port to USB-C adapter--which I purchased for about $14. I agree with you 100 percent. I own the larger 2010, 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) Display and it has been working great for about 12-years. A couple of years ago wanted to buy a M-1 "Mac Studio" and made an appointment at my local Apple retail store to learn how to connect my display. I carried the 27-inch Cinema Display into the store and none of the Apple employees knew how to make it work with a "Mac Studio". Learned weeks later on RUclips that, all I needed was just like you stated a mini display port to USB "C" adapter which, I now have. But, Apple, Inc. lost the sell of a new "Mac Studio" (smile...smile).

I bought my TB Display a couple years ago. It was a late production like-new and in the box for about $220usd. Used it with my MBP 15” 2015 and now with a MBP 14” M1 with the TB 2-3 adapter. With the M1 all the display settings and MacOS work perfectly. Positives; an APPLE design which is still beautiful and modern looking, superb build quality all metal and glass, very good sounding build-in speakers and the webcam is ‘good enough,’ legacy ports are actually useful for me with older accessories (and the MBP M1 has enough USB-c ports), even an Ethernet port, so with the one display to computer cable makes it clean in use. The display itself is still a high contrast with excellent color. Wish it was brighter in a daylight room, and the reflections are there, but in a dimmer light or at night it really looks great. At 2K or 1440p it is not the sharpest and if looking the individual pix can be noticed, but at normal view distance not so much so, it is sharp enough. No height adjustment, so a stand or just something under it, the angle adjustment is enough. For the price, build and view quality, it still is a very good option.

I agree 100 percent. I own the model right before this one, an Apple 2010 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display. I just picked up one from 2016 on offer up for a hundred bucks today and it works flawlessly with my Mac Mini M2! I thought I got taken for a ride when I first got it home and it doesn't turn on when plugged in and then I saw the random looking old thunderbird port but did some quick research and found the $50 Apple adaptor and ran to Best Buy to snag one right away and now it works great and looks amazing besides the mentioned glair. I've got a $13 adaptor coming tomorrow from Amazon and plan to see if it works just as good as my expensive Apple adaptor and if so then I'll just return it to best buy and use the cheaper one but in a pinch for someone who hates to wait the grossly overpriced Apple adaptor has the goods.

Since the M1 doesn't support dual display, I got a Dell D6000 docking station with display link (you need the display link software) and One of the monitors is thunderbolt and the other has mini display port which is converted to HDMI and connects to the Dell docking station, the specs are the same it's just the connector that differs. All controls work and having the camera built in is a big bonus as well as a wireless keyboard and track pad give me a clean set up. I just disconnect the 2 USB-C's when I travel and off I go, when reconnected everything starts right back up (the second display takes a few seconds to be recognized).

If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

Just picked one up off Facebook marketplace for $150. Looks great, but sadly does not work with my x1 carbon gen 12 with thunderbolt 4, even with the Apple adapter. My plan was to switch between that laptop and a Mac mini. Frankly, the lack of controls on the display is a little frustrating, especially trying to get this thing to turn on when using it on a pc. Kinda wished it just had a power button and multiple inputs.

I have had this monitor since 2011. I have replaced the original laptop and now run a 16" 2019 Mac Pro. I bought the adaptor and all worked well, till now. The Thunderbolt cable that runs to the adaptor is starting to fail. Barely move it and it "shorts out" causing the screens to die / recover / die and so on. I want to replace that Thunderbolt cable, but it seems to be built in, as I cant get it to unplug from the back of the monitor. A little worried to pull REAL hard on it to get it out. Does it unplug from the back? Would live to replace that cable. We are high volume wedding photographers and have never had a problem with this monster..Thanks for the video. Well done.

it does not unplug from the back, to replace the faulty cable it it is necessary to open the monitor (is easier than it seems according to the tutorials about this) the irony is that the inside end of the cable is just plugged to the circuit board

04:36 Excuse you, but what displays come in at 600-700 nits? There are only a select few and they are far from affordable. 300-400 nits is actually the average brightness of modern displays. The LG 32 Inch Ergo is a popular monitor and that only comes in at 350 nits. The modern Studio Display maxes out at 600 nits. Anything higher is more than likely using Mini LED instead of a standard backlight. Please do your research next time.

You say its a solid option and then add why it isn’t: It’s dark, big borders you can only connect it with a dongle and work around app and it doesn’t charge your Mac book… This video was just made to promote your standing desk. It’s a shame you could have also called it: „Why the Apple Display from 2011 is a bad option today.“ But no one in the world would click on that video because everyone know that you don’t buy a display that‘s from 2011. Also: regular display can‘t get to 700 nits of brightness that’s just incorrect. The Studio Display doesn’t look anything like the Thunderbolt Display the resolution is infinitely better, it‘s brighter, the colors are better and the speakers are so much better. I have no idea why you would suggest to buy that thing you can get amazing USB-C capable monitors that are still much better for around the same price. I'm sorry if the criticism sounds harsh, but you have to expect that when you spread such nonsense on the internet. Best regards

Hi there. I have a mid 2012 macbook pro and a Thunderbolt Display A1407 I got used from Craigslist. It's in beautiful shape, but . . . it won't power on. Yesterday I bought a 2020 MacMini with the M1 chip. I found a great deal on the Thunderbolt display, circa 2013, I had Apple look up the serial number. But the tech support people told me that this monitor is not compatible with the MacMini with the M1 chip. It had to be a 2019 or earlier. I found two videos that talked about a Cable Matter HDMI to Display port adapter, but in reference to using two monitors with the Mac Mini. Your solution is much simpler. But they warned of voltage output in the two monitor solution and the Cable Matters adapter solving that. Do you think the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 will work with the MacMini M1. Its a much more elegant solution and I agree with you about having it be an Apple product vs a more modern different brand. Thanks

This is precisely the setup I'm using (M1 mini, Thunderbolt display, T3-T2 adapter), and it works perfectly: it's exactly as if I were sitting in front of my old 2012 iMac 27" (but of course, SO much faster!). I'm afraid your tech support people are very wrong in this case!

I disconnected it, went into Settings: Displays; then Colour Profile and scrolled down the list to Thunderbolt and clicked on that. It came on when I plugged the Mac back in. Not sure if it will work for you but give it a try.

I recently bought one for my M1 Pro MBP and it works perfectly. Even the system brightness setting works straight from the keyboard, although I was baffled to realise that while having the Thunderbolt Display plugged I can only adjust the internal screen brightness by hitting ctrl + brightness keys (F1/F2) on my external Bluetooth Apple keyboard (and vice versa with the integrated keyboard). So is this functionality broken in Ventura? I'm still running Monterey
