- The Nikon F3 was introduced in 1980. In this overview, you'll learn about the F-mount and why it's awesome. You'll also find out about all the interchangeable backs, viewfinders and other parts that made the F series great. I'll walk you through all the functions of the camera, and cover a few of the flaws. As always, we'll look at the history and legacy of the the camera as well.
I decided to do this overview or review in advance of the rumored release of the "Nikon DF." This is allegedly a retro-styled, full frame DSLR. Nikon has been teasing it with its Pure Photography ad series. The camera is supposedly modeled after the F3, but from what I can tell, it looks to have a little FM and FE thrown it, too.
There two things I forgot to cover in the video.
First, there is a small tab in the 1 o'clock position of the lens mount that can be pulled out to use really old Nikon lenses. The F3 was the last camera to support metering for so-called Non-AI lenses. This means the F3 can use the full range of Nikon F-mount lenses, except the newest AF-S lenses, which are also called G series lenses.
Second, there were other versions of the F3. There was an F3T which was titanium clad and looked amazing. There was also an F3P, which was specially released for press photographers. It featured better weather-sealing, a special HP viewfinder, some bigger knobs and was built to pretty much always have the motor drive attached.
This is another dissertation length camera overview. There are plenty of short videos and looks at old cameras. I want my videos to stand out and be the definitive resource. If you like this videos, please support them by subscribing.
Please leave me comments with any questions you may have and with any recommendations you have for future videos. Thanks for watching and keep shooting!
When I first knew F3, it was 1985-6, 17 years old. Can only drool...amazingly 35 years has passed, I am old now.
Great video. Love my Nikon F3 HP
Having owned a Canon A-1, a lot of the design and features of this seem to be similar, if not identical. Having said that, the ability to swap out viewfinders, as well as all the lens options make the F3 very attractive. I was leaning towards the F2 due to concerns over the electromagnetic shutter, but the fact the F3 had Aperture Priority was a dealmaker. I often used AP on my A-1, and it's really useful.
I just picked my F3 up and this was super helpful. Thanks!
28mm lens is a stretched 35mm design.
Mike - sorry you're incorrect. The lens is a 50mm f/1.2, if you look at the front of the lens it says 1:1.2 if it was a 50mm f/2 it would just say 1:2 also it has a 1.2 on the aperture ring (also visible in the video), also it's way bigger than the f/2, also I paid about 8 times more for it than a f/2 costs. It's the real the deal.
I love the F3, plus the 50mm 1.2, outstanding couple for many situations.
I bought a F3 HP in June 1985. I loved it, I was so Impressed by how smooth and effortless it was to wind the Film, a Canon F1n in comparison, felt and sounded like it was crushing gravel. I added the MD-4 a couple months later. I used it until 1990, when it was Stolen. Great Camera
How pretty! That lens too. Wow.
Excellent review Cameron. I would like to note that in the F3, the metering system is actually contained in the body, under the mirror (and not the finder).
what a great video. thank you. You should make more.
Thanks for the detailed show and tell!
This camera and lens with a digital back would be my dream kit.
This camera is an old beauty.
You can also mount Non-AI Lenses on the Body. There is a little knob on the mount to flik the AI-Lever. :)
The 28mm is a classic lens with a pretty standard design. The f/2 and f/2.8 are sharp lenses, it just depends on your budget and your needs. The difference between a 24mm and a 28mm lens is not super dramatic, though it's a very personal decision about which you may prefer. I'm a 24mm junkie, I own four or five different ones for different cameras.
Great overview, thx!
Looked at this because of the lens; author pulled me in with a variety of interesting content.
I like how it already had the familiar nikon red stripe on the body
Pre-AI lenses aka non-CPU lenses work on the F3; that is why the clip at the top is there to fold away
