Nice and clear, thanks. I picked up an F3 privately. My batteries are now reading less than 1V each. My light metre shutter speed window won't light. Is there a minimum Voltage at which the camera will function? I did trip the shutter, so maybe there is a bit of juice but not enough to light the meter window? Again, nice and clear, thank you.
very useful, the owner's manual was not so complete, your info are very thoroyghful and did help me (Yannick from France, a Nikon shooter for 40 years but who never owned an F3!)
Thank you for making this video. I have been tasked with liquidating a late relatives things and a F3 is one of those items. There is a half used roll of film in it so we're curious enough to finish the roll and find out what's on those shots.
Thank you so much for your review. I print user manual but your video is better than manual. Thank you. Nikon F3 HO just arived in my home and i am exiting to use it. So and i have a one question. Which film do you prefer? Color - which one? And B&W - which one? thank you and good light
A few notes: T mode is not the setting that allows you to use the mechanical shutter. T stands for timed exposure, where the shutter release opens the shutter and locks it open mechanically, and rotating the shutter dial closes it. That way you don't have to hold it open and drain the battery like with bulb (B). The mechanical shutter backup will fire at 1/60th no matter the setting on the dial. You also don't need to hold the lock down for any shutter settings except to get out of A and X. So no need to press the button to close the shutter on T, for example.
Hello Joel, I have a Nikon F3 in almost new condition , and 3 different lenses . I inherited it from my husband. Now I have to sell it. Please give me an advise how I can figure out a fair price. I tried to check prices on e-bay but this was very confusing. Where can I sell the camera plus lenses? thanks
The F3 is a highly sought after camera. You can list it locally on Craigslist, and someone will snatch it up very quickly. That way you don't have to bother with shipping. Happy to review what you have and give you an idea on price if you need assistance. Just let me know. :)
AE hold button. Point the camera at what you want to meter, press and hold the button, recompose, and trip the shutter without releasing the button. Awkward, but works.
Hi! I recently purchased nokton 58mm f1.4 Slr lens to mount on my F3 however seems the aperture stuck on f1.4 No matter how I rotate the ring it doesn’t change may I ask if you know the reason Thanks !
How did you clean your battery contacts specifically? All of a sudden both my F2 and F3 are not responding to new batteries. I've tried both LR44 and SR44 batteries and both cameras are in near mint condition
I had a similar problem until I figured out that - After loading in a new roll of film, you must advance the film to frame number one for the light meter and shutter speed control to work.
1/3rd stop exposure comp will adjust shutter speeds even if lcd doesnt read anything different? if i meter a scene and it tells me f/4 1/125th and put +2/3rds comp, it stilll reads f/4 1/125th.. please let me know! cant find any information
Hi, I see that you have a Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 ZF. When shooting with it and the Nikon F3, do you keep all the modes available with the camera? (Program, Aperture Priority, etc.) Also, is the manual focus easy to use? Planning to get one ;) Thanks ! W
Recently I bought The Nikon F3 with AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8D , but when I checked the inbuilt light metre with my sekonic light metre (external metre) the Nikon F3 reads two stop under for example , The Nikon F3 reads 1/60'th & aperture F8 with ASA 200 AND my sekonic Light metre reads in that particular situation reads as 1/60'th & aperture F4 with ASA 200 so u can see the difference. Do u think it's good idea that I should always adjust my aperture with two stops based on my sekonic reading Because The Nikon F3 didn't work without Batteries & when I put batteries inside F3 it's reads wrong ? The Nikon F3 is a semi manual Focus camera. I have to put batteries inside or else it won't fire shutter.
It’s hard to know if the camera or the handheld meter is correct. Maybe compare both to several other meters to figure out which meter is accurate. My hand held Seconic meter reads a stop underexposed compared to my F3 snd Pentax cameras.
Somehow, it got into people's mind that the F3HP's viewfinder (DE-3) is superior. But it is not. Only if you wear glasses, it prevents heavy vignetting when you keep your face 1 inch away from the finder. But it's bulkier and yet more difficult to focus because the image you actually get to see is smaller than the regular F3 viewfinder (DE-2). So now I'm a guy looking for a separate DE-3 finder, because I want to use some viewfinder accessories, that only fit the DE-3. But used DE-3's are overpriced. Some costs nearly as much as a DE-2 viewfinder... with a COMPLETE F3 body attached to it. It's ridiculous.
Definitely the worst Nikon camera I have ever tried. The plastic film advance lever is a joke, the iso ring that you have to lift can stay up diagonally in between settings and if you accidentally press it, it can bend. The meter display LCD inside the viewfinder is again a joke, it just indicates full stops and is hardly readable today because most of them are old. In studio, the flash sync is slow (contemporary cameras reached 1/125) and there is no flash shoe to attach a trigger. The first two photos are fixed at 1/80th and you cannot change the speed preventing you from shooting frames 00 and 0. And the best part of all: if you try to overcome the fixed shutter speed of the first two frames by engaging the multiple exposure lever, you will break the film advance gear inside! WOOOW. FE2 is actually a much better camera as there is nothing actually useful that the F3 does that the FE2 cannot do.
I just got a Nikon F3 and your video was very helpful, thank you!
finallly a straightforward video that properly explains every function and setting, thank you so much!

I’ve had this camera for about 5 years and I am just now learning that it comes with a double exposure feature I’ve been doing this manually wow
Nice review, may i say the HP stands for high eyepoint (referring to eye relief) rather than high point.

That's kinda creepy ngl
The film developed completely black so this shall remain a mystery forever.
@@suitersautomotiveThanks for the update
Awesome video. I love how it’s to the point. Easy to understand.
Very informative. Thank you very much. Planning to pick one of these up soon. Appreciate the video! Anything tips on what I should be looking out for?
Thanks Joel! Just picked one up (again), my first camera I ever photographed on, so I am re-familiarizing myself. This was truly helpful :)
Great information 😊
Very well done for new Nikon F3 owners
you should do a review of that Zeiss zf ;)
Thank you so much for your review. I print user manual but your video is better than manual. Thank you.
Nikon F3 HO just arived in my home and i am exiting to use it.
So and i have a one question. Which film do you prefer? Color - which one? And B&W - which one?
thank you and good light

Awesome tutorial! Thanks!

Nikon F3 or Olympus OM2...which one would you choose?

very helpful! thanks sm
After loading in a new roll of film, you must advance the film to frame number one for the light meter and shutter speed control to work.
Thank you, this helped a lot
if I don’t have the motor drive cap will light get through and ruin the film? 🤷🏽♀️
What happens if the iso is increased to 800?
What's the circle button that can be pressed on the manual shutter release?
AE hold button. Point the camera at what you want to meter, press and hold the button, recompose, and trip the shutter without releasing the button. Awkward, but works.
Thanks!
