  • This beginner's guide to the Nikon F100 SLR will get the film curious started with one of my favorite 35mm camera bodies ever made. This guide assumes you have some familiarity with DSLR or mirrorless cameras and that you're just dipping your toe into the world of film for the first time.
Looking for the custom settings menu (CSM) key/pocket guide mentioned in the video? You can find it on my site danfinnen.com at danfinnen.com/...
Recommended lenses mentioned in the video:
Nikkor 50mm AF-D f1.8 (cheap, fantastic, still available new)
Nikkor 24-85mm AF-S f3.5-4.5 VR (lightweight everyday carry, good range and decent aperture)
There are too many to list here, but AF-S lenses will all work perfectly, AF-D lenses will work great and often be fantastic values.

Going around outside in street NYNY this week to try it after its' been sitting for 5 years.
I got F100, used in 2018. Shot 3 rolls then, 1 more is still in it. Thanks for reminder of 'window' FP 4 plus is what ASA?. Oh 125.
Needed to look at this video to remind me of how it works.
But happiest to walk around with the Zf I got in FEB. Went from Pentax K to Nikon F FX and DX at end of 2017.

A life time ago, my wife and I would order film from Kodak... a fifty roll case. Those were good times. This F-100 is one camera I am looking for. I am sure one will come along if I can be patient. This was a good video. I know I'll have fun with this camera.

I have owned Nikon cameras since 1962, including most of the manual options over the years and a few auto-focus. I have my FE2 and my F3, but my favorite is the F100, as it combines the best of all prior NIkons, and it avoids some of the added weight and complexities of the F6. There are enough details in the various settings that if you buy an F100, you want to get a copy of the manual for it. In reality, you will go through the various feature settings once with the manual, make choices based on how you generally use a camera, then forget the other options and never change those settings again. His comment on manually focusing lenses isn't quite on point, While the F100 does not have the tradition split image rangefinder of an F3, it does have a visual AF status readout in the finder, which acts like a digital rangefinder readout. It is probably more accurate, as it does not depend on your eyesight to work. All cameras have a weak point, and for the F100, that seems to be the latch on the back door, which a lot of people seem to break. Although Nikon parts to repair that are not available, there are a number of after-market parts and more than a few YT videos on how to make the repair yourself. I like the F100 so much that when a bargain on a like-new unit came along, I bought it and put it in storage against the unknown.

In the lower left corner of the viewfinder, easy to find and watch are 2 arrows with the meatball that appears when focus is nailed. It's as fast as a split prism. Manual focusing with this camera is a breeze. The GD f5 stuck those arrows in the upper R of the viewfinder, hard to find, easy to lose when focusing. This camera is not weather sealed. It will not do matrix metering with manual focus lenses like the f6. It could also be 25 years older than an october 2020 sold f6. But for the price, it's disposable compared to the f6 price.

Great instructional video. I just got off eBay but no instruction manual was supplied. Will all three meter modes work with my AI & ASI manual focus lenses?

You can't go wrong letting the camera take over exposure with program mode if you want to keep it easy!

Yeah the 50mm 1.8 AF-D can be had for cheap and it rocks! The AF-S version is great too.

Does the film camera back have a plastic latch on the door? on my F80 it broke off.

    • @DanFinnen
      @DanFinnen  8 месяцев назад

Unfortunately that door latch is a major weak point on all Nikon film SLRs, I have a F100 and some contemporary cheaper models with the same issue. You can swap the door pretty easily but if the latch in the body is broken it's pretty difficult to fix.

36 rolls of 36 res =1,296 exposures before changing or recharging batteries. That should over any one day’s shooting. Two bodies equals2,592 exposures.

    I had a Nikon F100 which I sold which I surely WISH I had NOT sold -
That camera is by far the BEST film camera for the relatively SMALL price tag.
Plenty of other Nikon film cameras are of course quite a bit better ... and for a HUGE price tag -
The F100 has many of the same features as better cameras, but just scaled WAY down for a lower price.
Built as tough as a hokey puck. Magnesium alloy body, if memory serves. NOT a Tinker Toy -

Yes, VR works, but you don't hear it just like Canon!
