One of the most brilliant quotes ever by Jim Carrey - "I wish everyone could have everything they've ever dreamed of just so they'll know that it won't make them happy."
@Greenman The Gardener Only way to happiness is through Jesus
@@team8506 why? why an ancient man's name? A man-god cult? Nah I'm good thanks
so he says... lolzzz
@Ryuzaki I've seen 'demons' and I've used the name of 'Jesus' and it did the same thing - you know why? Not because he's your god and saviour but because it is extremely deeply ingrained into human consciousness, over a period of thousands of years, until it has a de-facto power. You know you can invoke all kinds of 'symbols' that do exactly the same thing though right?
You can call on 'the light', you can call on 'Krishna', you can call on 'Buddha' or simply the 'Holy Spirit'. Hell you can even invoke robin hood if you so desired, and he would have the same 'demon-scaring' effect. Except where you see 'demons' as existential entities trying to possess you (due to believing the nonsense of mainstream religion), I see people's subconscious, I see their minds. You can summon up an evil face in your mind and then destroy it with a name or with even a vision of light; does this mean those things are of inherent existence? No, it does not, and they are not. All the demons, all the gods, all the good and evil and darkness and light, it's all happening within your MIND, i.e not playing out in an objective reality.
I've had my own experiences and I'll tell you this - Christians are controlled by fear, and evil gate-keepers of the priestly class that DO NOT WANT YOU to have YOUR OWN DIVINE EXPERIENCE. Instead you people shiver in the dark upon seeing a shadow in your own mind, however real it may seem; you're all prisoners of fear, with dogmatic beliefs about the afterlife and heaven and hell. I feel sorry for religious people because they have been prescribed a reality, instead of coming to their own conclusions about it. They live not within the beautiful cosmic mysteries of the universe and reality, but instead sit sneering, 'knowing' that they will be 'saved'. It is an abhorrent, ancient form of mind control and I implore you to try and see it from this point of view, for your own sanity and happiness.
True
"What is fame, really, except millions of people you don't know having an opinion about you?"
That's something you can really chew on
Anonymity is probably the most underrated thing ever. I worked at a 5 guys when I was a teenager and one night the wrestler Mick Foley walked in the door.. the man couldn't even order a burger without the whole staff and every customer trying to get a picture and autograph. Imagine not even being able to get fast food without it becoming a 20 minute ordeal. Pursuing fame has got to be one of the biggest mistakes someone can make.. if not the biggest.
@@stanmarsh912 That's a nightmare to say the least

Totally agree. I’ve become so appreciate of his insights.
...and I just used to assume he was a pompous ass.
I couldn’t have been more wrong-he’s a wonderfully complex and enlightened person...it’s pretty rad.
Beautiful comment. I agree. It's his true calling!
He is no longer a COMEDIAN.. INSPIRING
Whilst having to pander to the dark star, Hollyweird, he never stopped biting that hand. Always Top vs Bottom bloke. Honed. Sharpened. Now. He’s ready. Are we?
Congratulations to this amazing! Amazing, human.
“Fame is the mask that eats into the face of the wearer” is never more literally true as when I see the plastic surgery of people who’ve gone a bit too far to keep up appearances.
@Conor Mcdonald Masks eat away at everything!
Yup, but there it's often far more than just the face. It makes me sad when still very young people like Zooey Deschanel, who was so individually quirky and cute, choose to turn that into some 'ideal' of the 'standard female actor'. It wasn't even 'keeping up' appearances in that and many other cases, just a false perception that things that were her strengths (I thought) were perceived as weaknesses and discarded.
Pretty soon they just all look pretty much alike, with added clown lips, and later in life when all that surgery starts to disintegrate some of them start looking like something (not a good something) from another planet, downright weird and alien. I understand why they think they need to do it, at least when they are aging, but it's sad. It seems kind of ridiculous, too. If you think about it older people are required to be portrayed in media entertainment as well, but I guess you don't get megabucks for those roles.
That reminds me of an episode from The Twilight Zone "The Masks". It's very apropos. The plastic surgery begins to reflect how grotesque fame has twisted these celebrities physically and spiritually.
@@Cognaxance Not all of them. I think there is always a level of ignorance, willfully or not.
@@Snibble No. Not all.
Finally a famous person is explaining this with a honesty and thoughtful mind.

@@lukewheeldon8025 Exactly!
Definitely. But telling kids the downside of fame will do nothing if the need they’re looking to fill isn’t addressed. Kids need to feel like they matter. Kids need opportunities to touch the world in meaningful ways. They also need healthy social connections. We live in a world that doesn’t prioritize genuine love or meaning. Our culture is more fixated on status or instant gratification, depending on the person. Kids are programmed to value external approval because that’s more convenient than teaching them to value who they feel they are.
@@Catlady-mw4en It's all just a vicious cycle, really. What you're saying is true, and not just of kids. Some of us spend lifetimes trying to understand our own unfulfilled needs and trying to feel that we matter. By the time we figure those needs out - if we do - we've already passed on our worst idiosyncrasies to those that come after us. At which point we (and by we I mean 'me' - lol) finally understand the phrase "youth is wasted on the young.' We try to pass on our wisdom only to have it fall on deaf ears. And the cycle goes on.
In regards to our culture being fixed on those things, I have lived in multiple countries in both the west and the east. It's all people.

He intended to shock
"Seeking fame is like licking honey off a knife" - The Buddha. This statement stopped me in my tracks and in the relentless pursuit of "competing for a love we won't receive" fame in my mid-twenties. Great video Russell.
Wouldn't you lick the sides of the blade to get the honey off?
@@bentsound yes, but this is a metaphor about 'the pain of fame', not a practical instruction on how best to eat honey off a blade.
@@ancientfuture9690 So seeking fame can be less panful if one approaches, indirectly and avoids the dangerous end. I suppose the knife and honey metaphor can still work!
@@bentsound No, I think the lesson is that 'the VERY Seeking of fame itself' IS the problem. If fame comes as a consequence/result of having developed a hard earned skill then that would be better, but to seek fame (a deep longing to be seen, recognised and validated) as an end in itself is fraught with endless and insoluble problems. It ultimately stems from a deep seated and unhealed wound...a craving to "be enough" for others. Others that you don't even know personally...and that will always end badly.
The singer Lorde put it beautifully when she sang "And we're all competing, for a love we won't receive".
You are fortunate you made it out alive, Brother.
This is an important message. When addiction, craving or the feeling of lack occurs, go to the source of that feeling and investigate. Write it out / talk it out & feel it in the body. And from there you can touch that space, and find out where it comes from, what it needs & meet it with compassion and presence and you will realise you have what you need. Thanks Russel 🧡🌸
"We will struggle if we start bringing sincerity into the situation." Yep. Applies to almost any manufactured social or work situation.
For real. But he has a huge point getting an award for what? Fashion? Weird award. It's all about money. Get a celebrity an award, and they get more clicks and pics about their product. It's a circle of life for fame, and it must feel so fake and dishonest after not that long.
@@AmberBootheCat Very few walk away from it. It must be addictive. You're playing a role. And before long you become that character you're playing - a false self the mind generates that isn't real. Go gogo gogocgooo!!!
I felt like he helped me find myself. This feels truly like therapy.
This is such a struggle even for people who don't achieve fame... I so enjoy people and hearing their story and making people laugh and feel happy because I had felt so passed over most of my life. It's so easy to meet people on their level but sometimes it is so lonely when people don't see beyond how you make them feel. They don't see that there is an earnest person who is also human longing for reciprocation. It took me a very long time to realize, as you said, that those two things can't exist together: entertainment and affirmation. You can't give out in just entertainment because the reciprocation is not authentic. Everyone is waiting for a show.
Look at how much you have to offer beneath that surface level at the eye. Beautiful!

You're right. After some life experience with people who "have made it", yes, this is indeed the way the end up. Sometimes they do shake it off but in many cases they just go on with their lives like this. I used to think that it's a stereotypical oversimplification but unfortunately I have learnt first hand that this is true, and yes, fame, popularity makes people insane and inhumane. Sadly. And yes, trying to be a better version of oneself instead of being famous or popular would improve the situation but people nowadays hate the idea of real self-improvement. They mostly seek instant FB likes like popularity and that's it.

Many religions or spiritual practices suggest denying yourself pleasure or learning to take pleasure in the simple things. Basically either denial or substitution. However in Musashi's Dokkodo he says simply don't seek out pleasure for its own sake. That doesn't mean denying yourself pleasurable things, or changing your mind about what is or isn't pleasurable. A few years ago I started a now-defunct VR website and I can remember going into a VR chat app with a guy who I had just brought on to help me with the site and a stranger showed up. As you do, he asked what we did and we told him about the website. Turns out he was a reader of it and knew about the guy I had brought on, which was still very new. It was the weirdest feeling I'd ever had and I remembered not liking it at all. A total stranger knew who I was and what I did and I felt like I had to live up to some image he had of me, but I didn't know what that image was and I was terrified that I would say something stupid and ruin it. He was very nice and wasn't what I'd call a fan or anything. He simply was aware of me before I knew he existed and it was so uncomfortable for me. It’s a shame that you can’t be a talented actor without the ‘fame’ becoming part of your life. I don’t understand why people want to know what actors do in their private lives. Example : Do they leave the dentist and then try to find out his/her age, relationship status , social life, income etc ... No, they leave and go on w their lives. But for some reason seeing a person on a screen makes others feel entitled to be in their business. If no one cared, there would be no paparazzi.
It’s bizarre and in this case a shame because I love the characters Russell played. If he could make a film and then just go live a normal life he could have the best of both worlds but unfortunately it doesn’t work like that
Well, being an actor, getting fame and status is something thats just comes along with it.
Actors who tries to tell you that they didn't have a clue, unprepared and didn't crave it is lying.
Every big actor has done the journey.
But some actors stays actors, some actors are just moviestars. Like Daniel-Day Lewis if we talk about a real actor and not a moviestar. He comes out of the shadows once in a while to make movie so he can put food on the table.
Then hes back in hes shed making shoes all day long.
I have exactly the same thoughts as you. I don't understand there still isn't a law that prevents paparazzi from taking pictures of people going about their business in their private life whether it be with family, friends or alone. I understand when they are promoting a movie, doing an interview or gigging, which is work. But after work they should be left alone. This following and privacy invasion is inhuman and yet it is allowed. If someone has followed you and took pictures, you could take them to court but suddenly when your face is on the screen you don't have that right? That doesn't make any sense. I don't even mention how the media destroyed lives of many famous people because we all know.
They don’t in my country. For the most we leave our actors and musicians alone in my country. It would never even cross my mind to approach anyone I watch on a movie, or a singer that I like from some band; because to me they’re a stranger. Fame and celebrity are an American invention, which then the rest of the world picked up on. But in some places people still don’t care, for the most. I have seen American celebrities even in my life (e.g. Will Ferrell) never even thought of approaching them, never. I like his work as an actor, and loved seeing him with his family going for a weekend tour at the History museum in Stockholm, but as private individual to me he is a stranger, so it would never even cross my mind to approach him.
@@anetavolcano5496 I’m Portuguese, not currently living in Portugal tho. People in Portugal just leave each other alone. Generally speaking we don’t approach famous people because we don’t know them in person; it’s called common sense and sanity.
@@selmahare Fame and celebrity were a thing in other countries. You're blaming the US for recent technology that has made it worse. European history is littered with celebrities. They just didn't have the technology to photograph celebrities until fairly recently in human history. Rinpoche introduced me to sakyamuni Buddha and literally my life changed over that weekend. I no longer desire approval from external sources or people but turn inwards to find compassion and kindness and giving. I can see in the eyes of Russell this recognition also and thank him sincerely for his channel and for sharing his experiences. I have subscribed to Russell but also subscribed to the Buddha all those years ago and my life is so much better. Mette to all sentient beings.
Blessings...Jah
Yes, I have to say that a few years ago (or whenever it was) when you were in the spotlight I didn't really like your persona. Just love your show now. You are real and you speak about things that actually matter. Good luck for the future.
Goodness, really appreciate Russell's open reflection, humour, kindness, wisdom. I'm glad he's chosen to share his growth and the gems he's come across on platforms. All timeless insights.
I enjoyed all your phases. You made people laugh while also making them think about important issues like inequality. I also like that you challenged the media. It was apparent that you had created a persona but it was a lovable one. I think your most important work is in relation to addiction I'm sure you have been able to reach a lot of ppl who struggled with it and the way you reframed the 12 steps was brilliant 👏👍
'Oh my god, there is peace here' - I love that!
Not denying he found love. He also had a security blanket of earnings to sit on by then so of course there was peace. Try being peaceful when you’re hard up.
@@nija1976 I hear what you are saying, and both agree and disagree. As a retired public school teacher, on my pension, medicine, gas and groceries have become luxuries, but I still find peace watching the sunrise over a lake while the mists clear. I still find peace when I see the beauty in this natural world, injustices do not bring me peace though. So yup.
The difficulty of living after fame I imagine is incredible. The relationships with people are never the same as before. A motive in everyone’s mind that makes it hard to trust. Becomes very lonely and protective. Not to mention what it does to the people you already know.
Being a celebrity definitely embeds you within your own ego and sense of self. Big respect to Russell for stepping away.
You're like a therapist that cracks me up
I go to therapy once a week. I've been doing so for the past 5 years! I feel I would gain more from speaking with you just once. Your videos are genuine, enlightening, eye opening, and make me think.
@Mike Oxlong My insurance covers it fully, so I'm good. I don't believe it to be a scam. Sometimes it helps speaking, venting, crying to someone who won't judge you like a friend or relative would. Therapy has helped many, many people! Me being one. It's keeped me from suicide several times.
Thank you Russell. I appreciate that we are all just walking one another home.
Man, watching his videos really is a reminder of the different aspects of life that we don’t usually think about and while you shouldn’t take his word as gospel, I think his experience validates his message and really is therapeutic in a way.
I think people that seek fame are already either insane or well and truly on the way there
See my comment
What is insane to you?
I see a lot of truth to that. Great comment
Nope not necessarily. Sometimes there is a truly deep desire to influence people positively and inspire them to become more conscious and empowered because you have been on that journey yourself and wish to share it for the purpose of elevating suffering. You simply can't make blanket statements like this because everyone has been diff motives.
Like football, people only love you when you're playing. After they've taken all you given, they kick you to the curb. That's when, if you're blessed, you find out your real friend(s).
Bless you, Mr. Brand. Not many come through the other side like you have done.
"Oh yeah, that doesn't ever work. Ever." - Facts, my brother. A message very few people hear and understand.
I guess everyone likes validation, but many in " the industry" are over-the-top narcissists.... It''s nice that you found acceptance from within. It brings Peace.
That kind of validation is hollow. There is no real relationship there, only people who admire you and/or your work from a distance. Being adored by fans is nice, but it's meaningless. Having solid relationships with others who accept you for who you are, flaws and all, are what is important!

Yes, I agree
People who "sell their soul" to the devil for fame and fortune always forget that creativity comes from the Creator. Why be a one-hit wonder to the world when you can be precious and of immeasurable worth to God?
Agree. But the problem is God not in hurry, why should HE while he own the time and all times. But we do have a limited time and bills to pay, food to buy and diseases to cure from. I am not with selling souls of course but people sometimes forced to do it.
@@StorySpirit No one forces you to sell your soul. We have a choice. To crave fame and wealth and then sell your soul would condemn you. We can always say no and forfeit the fame and gain peace of mind. I'd rather be anonymous and keep my soul and peace of mind than to sell out and go to hell. Jesus said, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world (fame, riches and/or power) and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36) And, He also said, "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?" (Luke 9:25)
@@lisamay5649 I am not talking about my self, but believe me, I've seen people forced to sell their souls and body for food or safety of their loved ones. Choice is luxury for some people; even in the best countries in the world. A very minor example, we made a short film about managers who are forcing people to get vaccinated. Regarding fame and show bussines, it is like any bussines, we know cases of stars forced to act roles they don't want for money (i.e. food, medicine, living ...) , moreover, you know some cases of stars threatened by death if they made certain movies (example Passion of the Christ) . All what what I mean, that it is not that easy and sometimes not possible.
As much i miss 2013 Russell , i’m happy you found peace in life and better place spiritually & mentally,Thank you for everything
Wonderful truth from someone who walked that walk to a very high level.
Nothing in particular makes you insane. Insane is a label that people put on other people when it begins to become too tedious to understand their deviation from the common cultural paradigms.
I believe what some people call insanity is just a way to describe that someone has voluntarily or involuntarily found themselves in an obscure path of the human experience and that scares other people when it probably shouldn’t.
I think we are not so different. Given similar life experiences, we might make the same choices as the people we call insane.
Thanks for this, Russell ❤️🙏
HEY MR. :Brand. ! YOU HAVE TO INVITE THE TRUE COMMANDER IN CHIOEF OF THE WORLD WE ARE IN ...
: Russell-Jay: Gould. PLS DO SO : ruclips.net/video/fpFzt77huxc/видео.html
"celebrity shows us what we are celebrating" I love that!
As someone who's always thought it would be really awful to be famous I feel so glad for you that you made it out the other side. I never found the 'famous persona' Russell Brand appealing, but nowadays the real you is great, and I love how you've taken your fame and channelled it into having a platform where you can actually get through to people and make change happen. I just saw a quote from Keanu Reeves saying "I dream of a day where I walk down the street and hear people talking about morality, sustainability and philosophy instead of the Kardashians", and it seems to me you're part of us getting there...
What great advice to focus on the stimulation internally versus the stimulant! He's a genius
