I went on a solo female van life trip in Scotland. Today I'll be taking a solo trip in Scotland's countryside and travelling by van and exploring an area of Scotland which is often bypassed by many as they set their sights on Scotland's highlands and islands.
Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful part of Scotland and I spend a couple of days enjoying a Scotland road trip in a different part of the Galloway Forest Park, the UK's largest forest!

You have truly inspired me, I’ve been wanting to buy a camper van and travel around Scotland, and discover my routes, my grandparents were from Fife, before they passed they told me to explore Scotland, but being busy working as a clinician in the nhs I barely get time off. Also as a single man thought that on my own it wouldn’t be much fun, but watching you has inspired me to do it on my own, so thank you, best wishes Benjamin McGregor

I am told that the naming of monkey shoulder whiskey comes from the workers in the distillery where they would shovel around the malt while roasting/drying. Heavy work and one gets strong shoulders!

Thanks Ruth l thoroughly enjoyed your trip through Dumfries and Galloway. I've traveled the coast but not into the interior so l will revisit. Bramble jam, millionaire shortbread and empire biscuits are delicious particularly after a walk in the hills. There is a park in Glasgow that has an abundance of wild garlic which is so lush this time of year but l didn't realise you could use it for pesto. In Scotland are we so ignorant of nature's abundance around us. I must give it a try.

By accident I bought Suntory Toki, a blend and it was delicious. My son gifted me Monkey Shoulder and as you found out many blends are as good or better than the single malts, and cheaper too. Outstanding! Wow! The Dumfries/Galloway Forest Area & Loch Trool is so beautiful. The view from the hillside looking down on the Loch was spectacular! Also, the wind on this hike really made this adventure even more wild & exciting! Hiking up the hillside to the top of the Merrick was also quite thrilling! Then, seeing the amazing view at the top was truly breathtaking! What a view! I am sure Old John would have loved that view as well! I can imagine him now, leaning on his stick, munching on his Oat Cakes & hummus, gazing in wonder at one of the bonniest views in Scotland. Aaaah! LOL. Along with that, your dinner looked delicious Ruth. Just mouth watering! Wild garlic? Who knew? I love garlic too, so I would really love to try this dish sometime. Mmmm! I'll just be sure not to kiss anyone after my dinner. Well maybe just my dog! He seems to love me no matter what! LOL.
Even beyond all of that beauty, was the breathtaking view from under the carpet of the myriad of stars, twinkling in the dark night Sky! Spectacular! I'm sure Old John would have loved that too. Aye! 'Tis true! If only Old John had managed to hold on for just another couple of centuries or so, he could have also been marveling at those bright sparkling 'diamonds' in that magical night sky. And, who knows,, maybe even sharing in a wee 'monkey dram,' & some Bramble Crumpets. LOL Alas, though, 'twas not meant to be. Aye lassie!(I thought it was about that time again, to give 'Old John' another wee remembrance in appreciation of his legendary long life!) Although, I am sure you were entranced by all of this, even without Old John's company! Indeed! Who wouldn't? Well, Ruth this was a very unique & delightful experience! Thank you for sharing it with us! Especially in showcasing a lesser known, but very beautiful part of Scotland. Blessings to you Ruth!

Talk about positive thinking! Here you are, grass still frost burned, trees completely bare, not any new green growth to be seen, snow still on the ground, certainly no later in the year than March, you're being subjected to an 'icy blast' and you're calling it spring... well, spring certainly hadn't sprung, had it? Truly admirable you are, that's what I say.... and by the way, the Merrick is really one of the most boring hills to walk in all Scotland. The only thing it has to recommend it is the view from the top. Otherwise it's just a lump; perhaps a big lump, but just a lump nevertheless.

My dad was born in Dumfries and Galloway but left before the war and never came back, marrying my English mum down South after demob. He never spoke much about his early life before he died, and I've never been - so thanks for this, it certainly is a beautiful part of the world which I will visit!

Glad to see you enjoying your travels again after the Continental debacle. Clever of you to explore such a lovely area before the summer horde arrives. Makes such a difference , imo. I've sailed that coast a few times in my youth & visited Kirkcudbright for an arts festival during which you could visit all sorts of artsy/crafty studios. I think you might enjoy it. Funny you mention "monkey shoulder" ; my Weegie friend used to complain that he was getting monkey shoulder from working the winches on the boat. Had no idea of the whisky maker origin till years later. Kudos for supporting Wild & their brilliant eco-packaging.

@@ruthaisling Actually we chickened out of the planned sail to the isle of Man because of dodgy weather & rode to Kirkcudbright in a van full of hippies we met in Stranraer. Highly recommend the town, though. I'd love to see a video on the path down the Ayr coast. Doesn't have the rugged majesty of the Highlands, but some lovely beaches & wee port towns. Not to mention endless ruined castles built to ward off those pesky Irish & Viking invaders...lol... Ditto for The Isle of Man to which I've still never been. You ?

Enjoyed that video and you may be right about this area being overlooked. I'm in Glasgow and instinctively head north when I go on a day or weekend trip. Maybe I should travel south on occasion. Can't beat a bit of millionaires shortbread however the empire biscuit was my wife's favourite. Cancer took her and my trips are a little lonelier but I will keep going on them just maybe not as many.
Today I enjoyed a short hike around the foot of Ben Lomond and my dog enjoyed his swim in the loch.
Talking about elevation changes..... At the top of The Merrick you are only just a few hundred feet above to lowest point of the Grand Canyon.

A great video Miss Ruth! We say ' Howdy' to folks as well hello and other greetings.
If meeting an older man you know, you would say ' Howdy Míster Bill."
If meeting any woman or girl, you always use the term Miss in front of her first name, even if married or just a child. Like Miss Ruth! Just a way to show respect and kindness to any female, young or old, married or single.
That is what we Do in The South.
My mom thot it impolite for any man to just use a womans first name by itself. She said it showed a familiarity between them to the public and that was not property. Using Miss Ruth shows the property respect.

Anyway Ruth, I hope you get lucky enough to catch them in situ one day too, they're wonderful to watch in their native terrain.

That Empire biscuit looks really nice. Thinking of Scottish biscuits/cakes reminded me that, when I was a kid (1960's) you used to be able to get a biscuit called a Royal Scot - quite plain semi-sweet, but with a salty taste that made them unique. Can't get them anywhere in England now!!
