Montreal's Most Thrilling Attraction

  • The infamous Lachine Rapids of Montreal are a 3-mile long series of Class 5 rapids in the Saint Lawrence River made up of large year-round standing waves, ranking 2nd in North America for largest runnable rapids by total water volume (after the Colorado River). Historically, they were known for being extremely dangerous and un-passable to ships, and were the reason the French explorers chose to port nearby in 1535, giving birth to the city of Montreal. Today, the rapids attract thrill seekers from around the world who are drawn to the many unique water activities it offers, including kayaking, river surfing, whitewater rafting and jet boating, all within a 10 minute ride of Downtown Montreal.

The Lachine rapids are actually one of the main reasons Montréal even exists. The first european explorers planned on going way further inland but their ships could not get past the rapids.

The construction of Montreal is actually the sole reason that the Lachine rapids even exists. The governor wanted to protect the city, therefore they built the rapids.

Montréal was chosen because of all the waterways that lead to the island. Nouvelle France economy was based on fur trade , it was the best place to install a trading post . The rapids were not that much of a problem .

I hope that the surfers and kayakers etc. take a nice soapy decontamination shower afterwards. Below is an inconclusive report on the water quality.
Due to industrialization over the past 100 years, the sediments at the bottom of the Lachine Canal and Bay have become contaminated. This study investigated the heavy metal accumulation mechanisms within the Lachine Canal sediments and was carried out in three phases. The Phase I, 28 parameters were measured on 44 sediment samples collected along the Lachine Canal and Bay. The results revealed the presence of a wide variety of both organic and inorganic contaminants. Heavy metals such as Zn < Pb < Cr < Ni < Cu < Cd (in order of decreasing abundance) in addition to organic contaminants (PAHs < MAHs < PCBs) were found in high concentrations exceeding background concentrations and various quality criteria levels. The total load of both organic and inorganic contaminants was found to be higher in the canal than in the bay zone. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate sediment assessment values with respect to known adsorptive phases such as % clay fraction, TOC (Total Organic Carbon), and % CaCO3. Although a positive correlation existed between % clay fraction or TOC and the total cumulative load of heavy metals, the correlation could not be assessed as conclusive. Significant correlations were obtained between Pb, Ni, and Zn and the carbonate content of the sediments. Pollution Indices (PI) were used according to the format proposed by Canadian authorities and as such were evaluated as incomplete.
Enjoy what Montréal has to offer but be careful about your water sports activities around the island.
Ciao from Little Italy 🇮🇹 Montréal

Parc des Rapides is the nicest spot to see the rapids. Just venturing into them is not encouraged without a professional who knows what they’re doing.
