    In his memoirs my father-in-law recalled a bombing mission on the sub pens over Trondheim as a pilot of a Lancaster in RAAF 467 squadron. He wrote that they flew at night just above sea level for hours to avoid German radar. They were under strict orders to bomb only if the target was visible to prevent any Norwegian civilian casualties. A pathfinder screwed the mission, and they had to abort. Germans had laid smoke. They dropped their bombs at sea and made it back to the north of Scotland on fumes.

    Ooh the landing on the farm at the end is crazy even with flak, fighter damage and hitting the cliff the B 17 looks not so seriously damage except for the engines.

    The Luftwaffe aircraft that attacked them were not Ju-88's but instead were Me-110's. The Ju-88 had a single vertical stabilizer, not the two the Me-110 had, however, both were twin-engine aircraft. During the heat of the fight, it was not unusual for those involved to mistakenly identify aircraft of the enemy. Throughout the war, pilots and crews of both sides of the conflict misidentified opposing aircraft.

    Good thing their waist-gunner called out that flak at 1:58 -- I don't think anybody had noticed it.

    It was common practice for the lead aircraft in a formation to signal navigation and other messages by blinker light to the surrounding aircraft. So I'm pretty sure they had a pretty good idea of Crosby's intentions.

  • @justsmashing4628
    @justsmashing4628 6 месяцев назад +3

    in reality the allied average bomb never fell within 5 miles of a target, and the gunners very rarely hit any German fighters.

    5:29 what exactly is a Messerschmidt Engine?! It is a Daimler Benz Engine, from a Messerschmidt plane. Also that wasnt a machine gun in the middle, it was a machine cannon.

      You´re right - Mercedes Benz DB 601 A, E (E-Version, F-Version) and MB DB 605 AM, AS, D (G-Version, K-Version) . The Machine Gun in the "middle" had the designation MG 151/20 (starting with the Me Bf 109 F-2) .

    The formation flying is shown much too close together than it was for real. Also, the turn should be 'at the IP' (Initial Point), not 'to the IP'.
