Dont know if you ever tried it but there are transparent colored craft paints for making simulated stained glass projects. Might help with the glow, but any paint will tough to color match to a thin layer of evenly printed ink. Neat machine!🇺🇸
I think stained glass is usually more transparent than these ,these are more of a translucent I think the ultimate way would be to spray it with an air gun but it would take a lot longer to tape everything off, etc.... it'd look better though for sure!
@@LyonsArcade yes it would need to be backed with a translucent white like the original screen print inks. May not be worth the time and effort for a low end touch up job, but a rare glass or nice original with only one spot to repair might be worth it. You may want to use scrap plexiglass to make tests on. Years ago I worked at a screen print shop and we made a few reproduction plastics an back glasses for a customer who restored machines, we had rigged up a light box to test the back lit colors when printing samples. Was a heck of a lot of work to get it right, we lost money making the parts and hand tracing/drawing the art to make the screens but it was such a cool project my boss thought it was worth it to help the guy......plus it was fun to do😉👍
I keep track you onl made 48 videos on this game 😉 Glass is smooth and hard to get paint to stick to begin with. I'm surprised it stays as long as it does. It's more temp changes that makes flake. Breaks down faster on some colors because they have more pigment then binders in them like brown.
Way back around 1972, when it was still in the original independence hall, not that weird building they have today. I rapped it lightly with my knuckles, enjoyed the faint ring! I was just a little kid then, but that thing left a lasting impression on me! Let freedom ring.

I have this same em version. My backglass got so bad all of the backglass lost its screen printing. I agree with you that certain colors flake and ithers dont. I agree with you that the screenprinting ink and the glass expand and vontract at different rates. The guy at Mayfair backglassas thinks that it might be caused hy temperture and humidity on the day of screening. it would he interesting to know the exact causes from sime8ne who knows the old workd type of screenprinting.
Nice job. Definitely looks a lot better. If the light highlights the areas that were fixed, what about removing some of the lightbulbs for less light? Will that help?
One thing you could (possibly) work into your repairs is Pantone matching. If you can match a color to a Pantone, or source the info, you could then source a paint which may match that Pantone color... Assuming Pantones were used. I would have masked the windows for numbers. Cool videos man. Keep it up! Tracking Pantone colors would be one way to preserve history of these as well. Then there's that patina.. lol
Man everybody's inventory everywhere is getting all screwed up, they do this new crap where the chain stores don't keep very many of anything on the shelves, just one or two of everything and then send more from the warehouse when the register scans that item as sold... but it screws everything up and everywhere runs out of everything, I go in stores all the time and all the good stuff is gone. A friend of mine was telling me the other day that when new action figures come out (he collects them) they're always sold out, as soon as they're put on the shelf. so apparently every store that sells action figures never has any of them in! PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch all sold out constantly. They never have any on the shelf. Etc.
Hi Ron! I've got a couple of general questions for you today (some of which actually relate to today's video... :-p) - It occurred to me that while we've seen you do touch ups on back glasses, I don't think we've ever seen the proper method for the removal/installation of the back glass on the older EM machines (Newer machines, I believe, have a lock, and the translite panel lifts out easily). Now, obviously, this would be a two-hand job, and someone has to operate the camera, but I, for one would sometime like to see an example of the proper handling of an EM back glass. - Have you considered taking a small white label (say, half an address label), adhering it to the side of each bottle of your paints, and painting a sample on each label, to better see the actual dried color from that bottle? - I understand the purpose of the metal plate on the right side of the shooter lane (where the ball is ejected into the shooter lane), but what is the purpose of the metal 'bridge' across the shooter lane, about halfway up? (I meant to ask this in the last video, but I got distracted... :-/) Looking forward to seeing this in action!
I think the arched bridge part at the shooter lane end is just to keep the wood in place and to keep it straight :) you're dealing with quite some forces :) btw... i have seen Ron remove the backglass a few times already ;)
Each machine is different but generally they have some little metal slides that slide over the top of the backglass that can be loosened if the back door is off, once those are slid out of the way the glass can be lifted straight up, there's a bar on the bottom to pick it up and out of the channel it sits in... The sticker thing would be a good idea, the metal arch is I believe just to hold the wood in place like Jeroen said since at that end it's only held with a screw from underneath, so they put that on the top so it can't move if it gets bashed!
Cecilia Giménez approves. ;-P But honestly I think it's fine. If it was me, I'd probably just spray it down and leave the flakes. Maybe someday you'll stumble across a better process that matches the level of all your other excellent work.
Hi Ron, I think you are correct about how the heat from the lights doesn't cause the backglass flaking. Mainly because my '79 pinball machine has flaking on the TILT paint. Now how often does that lamp come on for it to heat the paint up and wreck it? Just a thought I wanted to share. Love the videos!
On my Gottlieb Big Indian, the TILT is lit along with Game Over, but having said that, there is a massive amount of flaking on my backglass (4" x 4") in the top right corner and there was a defective light socket there. I think the heat adds to the issue.

My wife - maybe not so much because now I want to buy a pinball machine (she will get over that eventually) 😂 Question for you though - would it possibly be better to color match the paint with the lights shining behind the back glass as it would normally be in operation?
Your thinking of Mylar from overhead projectors. That would work. Like you said how much you want to put into it? You want to get real fancy put it in a vacuum after you clear it but is it worth it? Probly not!

Is it me. It's really only the brown that flakes off than any of the other colors. Weird. Why would that be. Would it be because the brown was put on thinner than the other colors when they silk screened it?
The colors are made with different stuff in them which is what gives them a special color, so some of them have more of this or that in it, and whatever you need a bunch of to make it brown must flake easier!
I have a hypothetical question for you. I was watching a RUclips video on repairing a galaga board. And the person was checking the ROM and RAM chips and reprogramming the ones that was dead. But he found one that was titled monster bash. And he couldn't figure out where it came from or who put it in. He was doing a board repair for someone else. And he just threw it away because it was junk. And he always repairs arcade games. But the thing that peaked my interest was the name monster bash.. Because it's a Williams pinball machine. And that got me thinking. I know Williams Bally's and Midway are all together as one company Williams entertainment. And I also know Midway and Bally's does video arcade games well. And I also know Midway makes games for namco. Like pac man galaxian and galaga. And I also know some circuit boards and chips can be swapped out with each other.. as long as they're from the same company cuz they're pretty much identical except for the programming ROMS itself. So I'm guessing it's only the RAM chips are being swapped out. So my question is. Does it or will it work with pinball machine RAM chips being swapped With arcade chips? I don't think it can work that way. Hypothetically speaking. I'm not an engineer so I have no idea. But still curious about it. Would it work?
You have a bunch of different things going on there, Galaga was made by Midway but way back in 1981... and Monster Bash wasn't made until about 1998, so even though technically they're both Midway, Midway was no longer making any Galagas at that point, and the game boards in both machines are nothing like each other. Now the actual rom chip itself can be removed and somebody may have stuck it in the wrong board... There was also a pretty rare Sega arcade game, that came out in 1982 called "Monster Bash", maybe the chip was off that? Ram chips mean "Random Access Memory" they don't have any information burned on them so as long as they're the same part number they work in all kinds of boards. A Rom chip means "Read only Memory" and they have a certain code burned on them for each game, they'll only work in the game they were intended for.
It depends on how it was stored over the years, if they were in an un air conditioned environment like a storage building or something the backglasses get destroyed....

I stopped at 3 places the other day looking for Triple Thick. Nobody had the stuff. Had to settle for a thick spray on lacquer. Must be in demand.

The stuff dries in a couple hours usually. I don't leave it on long enough for the lights to really heat up much either.

My Freedom is about ten times worse than this one. I wish mine looked this good. I think they just did a poor job when they made these.
