- This special episode of From the Star Wars Home Video Library acts as a visual timeline of the home video releases of the live action Star Wars films and various TV series (1976 - 2017). This is the seventh overall version of this video, uploaded on January 14, 2018.

Excellent video, I will have to pick up a copy of your book. I have been collecting Star Wars since 1977, My mother bought our first VHS player in1982 and got me that first VHS tape. In later years I got a little obsessed and thought I had a fairly complete US video set (except skipping Bata tapes), but I see that I need so many others that I missed. I kind of got out of the collecting when Disney took over except for the basic DVD releases of the new movies. I did see many of those newer releases that I would like to track down. Thanks for the very complete video, I was glued to the screen! 😀
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The book (3 volumes in its 2nd Edition form that's out now) is much more thorough, and I've found that there's enough now that a video like this would be untenable. So... I plan to eventually start a series of year-by-year videos to highlight the key releases of each year from 1977 to present. The downside is that I need to get my giant spreadsheet to track my collection ready to share with the community before then, so I can use that to make sure I don't forget a key release for a given year when starting that new side series.

You mean the REAL 4th Star Wars film? As lame as it was, it's still better than any subsequent film after the original trilogy.
I used to say the same thing about "The Beatles Let It Be" movie, I have it on LD because they said it would never be seen again. Just for historic sake, it would be nice to have an official restored version of the Holiday Special, no matter how bad or good, but the bootlegs out there is all we will ever get!
I’m making a collection of these myself. Obviously, I’m not collecting them all, just major vhs, dvd, and blu ray releases. I’m not that far off from completing it. But YOU sir, you don’t even have a full collection and your shelf is the size of a 1950’s super computer. On the subject of Star Wars home video releases, I applaud and salute you sir!
This is a fantastic video! Thank you so much for recording all of this! I'm jealous. Currently, I only have the '95 faces laser disc set (which I bought new back then), the 2006 DVD set (for the bonus discs of the theatrical films), and then the Disney Plus UHD 4K releases (which I have backups of that are edited with print footage to match the theatrical cuts rather than SE versions).

Interesting that the original film was released on home video for the first time just before its last (for that era anyway) theatrical re-release on August 13, 1982. One minor correction: Although Kenner did manage to get a few SW products out before the end of 1977 (the first board game, some jigsaw puzzles, etc), the toy line itself did not appear until 1978, and that includes those "Movie Cassettes" with the viewer. Anyway, great job and awesome collection.
It seems that Star Wars always had a delayed video release. I always hated that the DVDs didn't come out when Episode I did, I had to get those VCDs to hold me over.

I'm french , and I used to live in germany between 1983 and 1992. You should take a look at the german vhs releases from the 80's. They are my favorite , : actually the covers are not put into black or grey plastic cases (like in France or England), nor thin cardboard boxes like in the USA.
Actually the cover is directely print into the box. These are old versions but sooooo beautiful. And you should look at the exclusive "silver screen edition vhs box set " it was exclusive during a very short period on a german channel , to celebrate the very first time of trilogy in Germany (1990/1991) . It included , the trilogy (with the awesome vhs boxes, the story of star wars, and the first ewok tv movie)
Then , something else , you said in a video that the original star wars with no episode 4 a new hope title (in the opening crawl )
Has ever been released on home media ... My french star wars vhs from the 80's , has this opening crawl with NO "a new hope episode 4" title at the beginning....

When my dad brought home the CED version of Return of the Jedi the day it came out, I noticed the outer shell was white and was scared it was not in stereo. It was but as a kid I hated that those two discs did not match those of SW and Empire.
Likely the last of the CEDs and they were using existing left-over stock to put them together. The format folded just after ROTJ was put out.

I have the 2001 Phantom Menace, 2002 Attack of the Clones, 2005 Revenge of the Sith, 2006 original Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars the Clone Wars collectors edition, and Star Wars the Clone Wars season 6. since one of the Clone Wars disc didn't work I had to get Clone Wars season 5. all of these are on widescreen DVD.
Hi Nathan, I've seen someone on RUclips with a Video 8 release of ROTJ. Do you know if the other two Star Wars films were also released? Come to think of it, perhaps TPM as well?
I've never really delved into Video8, mainly because, to my knowledge, didn't have Star Wars releases in the U.S. The only ones I've ever seen (ROTJ is the only one I've seen, I believe) have been from markets like the UK. I'm only now dabbling at all in pre-DVD releases from the UK. I will probably look into it at some point. You might ask on the Star Wars Home Video Facebook group. I'm sure someone there is more versed in UK releases and would be able to say for sure.

These days, probably the Blufans sets from China for TFA and RO.
I have the 3 DVD's of the original trilogy from 2006 with the unaltered editions and a Force Awakens DVD.
They just announced the details of the dvd/bluray release of Episode VIII the Last Jedi set for March or so. I was planning on getting the best buy steel book exclusive because none of the exclusives from wal mart, target, or best buy have any bonus disc with bonus documentaries or digital content. I was curious as to wether you think we should wait until a collector's edition of the last jedi comes out like with episode VII the force awakens. What do you think? Thanks for the updated timeline. I've yet to see any official announcement of the home video releases for TLJ, though there are companies putting up their own preorders that are ending up revealing details without any context. Have you actually seen any info on a Walmart exclusive? I've not seen anything on that yet at all.
We've just learned today that the Target version will indeed have at least one exclusive featurette, so there will be bonus content for Target again like the last two times. We also haven't seen a 4K version of the Target exclusive, if there is meant to be one. Otherwise, it looks like Best Buy currently has the only 4K exclusive (the steelbook, alongside a regular BD steelbook).
Personally, I wouldn't expect an eventual Collector's Edition. The CE for TFA was basically because they made the boneheaded decision not to include a Blu-ray 3D release that April. Now, we're basically past that point, with Rogue One getting a 3D release day-and-date in other regions and day-and-date in the U.S. at Target and Best Buy. Now, it seems that the U.S. won't be getting a 3D release at all for TLJ, but it is still coming day-and-date with the regular releases in other regions like the UK. There shouldn't be a need for a CE of TLJ in the same way that there wasn't a need for a CE of Rogue One. Waiting will probably just mean waiting for something that never happens this time.
Now if only they'd make an official announcement with the all-but-confirmed release date only about 9 or 10 weeks away...
someone gave me the old cd version of the special editions movies to ad to my collection which I thought was incredible watched it on my old laptop already I also had bootleg copies on VHS and DVD from Vietnam on DVD
Would you be able to do an update on this video? Since you have newer releases and many more international releases
I this format, no. However, my plan right now is that once I get done building the ridiculously-huge spreadsheet that I'm building these days that will track my entire collection and then be shared with others to track theirs, I will use that as the basis to short by year and start a new series of videos that are sort of "Star Wars Home Video: Year by Year," looking at the various milestones and releases of each year from 1977 to present. I don't know when that will happen, but I anticipate maybe in 2025, as work on the spreadsheet is slow-going with my sheer work-related workload and other obligations.
For a non- very succesful video format as LD was , there were quite many different releases of these films. For me LD was a beautiful video format with an amazing digital sound quality.
LD was successful but it was niche, more for the videophiles, people who had those huge projection TVs and as such a smaller market. The unsuccessful format was the RCA CED, it wasn't around for very long, they made the discs longer than the players, just long enough the get "Return of The Jedi" out and folded just after.
2018 will be an eventful year for home video. We'll be getting The Last Jedi, Solo, Rebels S4, and possibly Freemaker S2 and a mainstream Forces of Destiny release.
Not to mention that it also means Star Wars in 4K for the first time but perhaps an end to 3D U.S. releases.

Eshan Mehere Unlikely. At least not anytime soon. I have switched programs and such and gotten quite a few more foreign releases to drop in, but at this point I’m lucky to ever have time to record regular episodes, let alone something as time-consuming as one of these. Maybe once the baby is old enough to go to school.

I'd love to update it someday, but with so much now, it's not in the cards, especially with a toddler. But the very concept helped inspire more and more color pictures in the upcoming second edition, 3-volume set of A Saga on Home Video that now has a pic count of over 1,350.
Do the laserdiscs from 1985 have the original stereo audio or is it the new home video mix?
It’s the old mix. Assuming you are referring to the remastering that B.B. did in 1985 that hit VHS in 1986. No restored C-3PO line.

How rare would you say a sealed copy of the original LD release of ANH is?
Hard to say. Depends on condition. Those aren't super rare but also not terribly common on secondary selling markets.
I don't know how rare, I paid less than $30.00 for one that was like new maybe 7 years ago. The later versions are much more common, and you could pick up the Faces version for $5.00 each if you shop around.

Are the 2017 blu ray release’s very limited
If you mean the reissues (TFA, RO, Complete Saga, PT, and OT) that were Walmart exclusives and only available for about a month or two at the end of 2017, then yes. They were basically just new slipcovers over previous releases with a slipped in Forces of Destiny Vol. 1 DVD in a little paper envelope, but only being available a short time has made them in very short supply on the secondary market. It wasn't an intentional limited number, per se, just turned out that way due to the time constraint.
If that's not the ones you mean, could you clarify what you're referring to?
i have the classic creatures of return of the jedi on LD japanese version.
I haven't hunted those down myself yet, since they are in one of the Japanese boxed sets with the OT films. I keep figuring that someday I'll grab the individual behind the scenes specials.
In the UK at tesco the force awakens came with star wars an expert guide so maybe you could add this in a meanwhile section in an update!!

$120 in 1982 adjusted for inflation is over $380, which is more expensive than a nintendo switch and a new game
Yeah. I'm including even more inflation adjusted data in the next edition of A Saga on Home Video to help emphasize the disparity between now and then. Adjusted for inflation, we are in a much more fiscally efficient era for home video at this point.
Most of your collection would go straight to the trash compactor if donated to a Salvation Army or GoodWill. 😰
True, but other than for collectors, there really isn't much use these days for pre-DVD formats, and even DVD is dwindling and on life support thanks to BD players still playing DVDs.

I just ordered the limited edition dvds of the original trilogy as they have the original theatrical versions. Dvd is still more then watchable even these days of 4k. Hopefully my bluray player will upscale them up a bit.

Nathan, I really like all your "From the Star Wars Home Video Library" videos, and I regularly refer friends and family to certain videos in this long-running series whenever questions/debates arise about certain "Star Wars" home video releases. But, Nathan, I beg you - Please stop referring to "Star Wars" as "A New Hope". I was 8 years old when "Star Wars" was released in 1977. I've grown up with "Star Wars" basically my entire life. So listen to me, Nathan. Look at me in my eyeball. I can assure you that never, EVER, does ANY "Star Wars" fan refer to "Star Wars" in casual conversation as "A New Hope". Just...no. It does not happen. My guess is you're probably wanting to be proper by respecting the individual episode titles, but no. Please. Stop. The name of the film released in 1977 that became a worldwide cultural phenomenon is called "Star Wars". Period. By the way this is an incredible video you uploaded. For what it's worth, as someone who has been active in the fan community online since around 1996 and an avid fan, collector of the books, comics, and home video relases, a podcaster since 2002, and the producer of the single most comprehensive Star Wars chronology document in existence over the last 20 years . . . I can say with certainty that the vast majority of people that I interact with in the fan community pretty much *all* refer to the original film as A New Hope or simply ANH these days. Virtually none of them ever refer to it simply as "Star Wars," as that is no longer accurate and could refer to the film, the franchise, the film saga, or any number of other things.
Yes, the film that became a phenomenon in 1977 was called Star Wars, and that was what it was known as until shortly after its garnered a sequel, after which simply calling the original film by the series' name made less and less sense over time. In my view and that of the vast majority of fans I've interacted with over decades now, the term "Star Wars" for the 1977 film (unless you are literally talking about the stereo or mono theatrical versions pre-subtitle) is considered inaccurate or at least non-specific, and ANH or "A New Hope" is the way the film is generally referred to. I would assume this simply means we tend to move in different fandom circles or communities, hence the diffference of perspective. Call it whatever you like, of course, but you generally won't ever see me referring to it by the series (and pre-subtitle) name. Not to do so when presenting something designed to be informative or educational is to court confusion.
Nathan Butler - In my experience, I, personally, have never, EVER heard anyone say, “So, I was watching “A New Hope” the other night, and...”. Never. Nope. Not once. I guess it’s a generational thing and we’ll have to agree to disagree. Again, seriously, these videos are great.
Generational or corners of fandom and all that. I'd be curious if anyone has ever done a study, informal or otherwise, on the nomenclature fans of Star Wars use. I figure the closest thing was probably Brooker's "Using the Force: Creativity, Community, and Star Wars Fans" years back, but I don't think he got that specific. Thanks for the support!
@@ChronoRadio In my own admittedly limited experience, the films were simply referred to as Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi until TPM in '99. The VHS/LD covers you feature in your video bear this out, as well as the early 90s VHS promos which refer to ANH as 'Star Wars' - despite the 'ANH' thing being around since '81.
For me it will always be 'Star Wars', but conversational necessity dictates the occasional use of 'Ep 4' for clarity! Great video, thanks!
