The first time I heard the Pat Metheny Group was in 1978 on a live TV show, they played "San Lorenzo"
I still think it's the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

Now we're talkin'! 😁 Pat Metheny is a great next step after Steely Dan, if you want to go deeper into jazz. He's been enormously successful because of the melodic accessibility of his music. He's recorded solo albums, albums with The Pat Metheny Group, and has collaborated with just about everyone. He's been described as 'the last of the old guys', in terms of his approach to harmony and improvisation. He's simply a master and -- like McCartney -- we're lucky every year he's still out there performing.

  • @ChrisEchoes

The Pat Metheny Group was basically a partnership between Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays with Steve Rodby as their anchor. It was also a group specifically designed to incorporate modern technology into jazz. Lyle’s subtle integration of synths is amazing and Pat has been at the forefront of using guitar synths. This particular incarnation of the PMG had a distinct Brazilian slant with Armando Marcal on percussion and Pedro Aznar on vocals and various other instruments. It was PMG at their most accessible while still being firmly rooted in jazz. Minuano (Six Eight) might be my favourite piece from this period. Oh, and do check out live recordings of them doing the piece First Circle, Lyle’s piano solo is freaking awesome.

Pat’s (and Lyle’s) compositions and playing are so “smooth”, “impeccable”, and with such “finesse”, that it’s possible to overlook what monstrous musicianship is involved here! Cool to see you recognize that : ) Pat and Lyle had this band, with some personnel changes, going for 25 years, until Lyle got too I’ll to continue. Over 20 Grammys along the way, a LOT of great music to explore in the PMG catalog! And then…there’s the many albums Pat Metheny has recorded outside the PMG. See him if you can! 😊

Metheny is one deep and satisfying rabbit hole. Some of the most amazing music... said the Steely Dan guy. He is old school, OG, etc. cut from the same cloth as Jaco Pastorius, Joni Mitchelll, etc. Hard to catagorize...not as much fusion- more straight ahead/modern jazz/world jazz. Some of his early stuff - American Garage from '79 was more fusion-y in a Pat sort of way. His group is one of the rarest of rare in that their live shows are BETTER than their records- because their musicianship and prowess allow them to expand on the original material without watering it down. Much the opposite. Lyle Mayes (RIP) was as talented as PM, but they made each other sound better and had a real musical ESP between them. Try First Circle from the album of the same name. Live of course. Happy listening.

Mr. Metheny is indeed a deep rabbit hole, but there are some LPs that I don't think are worth the time. Song X, his tribute to Ornette Coleman is harsh, and Zero Tolerance for Silence, I believe, was a contractual obligation and not very viable.
