Dude, this is a very sophisticate and complex music somehow made understandable for the common folk. I wish more people would listen to this kind of music. It will give them a whole new prospective of what art is.

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. I've been listening to Pat and Lyle's music since stumbling upon their music in the 80's.
Talking about Minuano 6/8: The story is that I taped it once listening to the radio, but it was faded out half-way through the song. That's how i knew the song for years until I saw the Pat Metheny Group play Minuano 6/8 in Vredenburg, Utrecht in The Netherlands. I was already choking up when they started playing it, but then the song continued where my tape always faded out. Everybody switched instruments in a heartbeat entering the marimba section and I almost had an out-of-body experience. Then the song kept climbing and climbing through a dazzling set of chord changes, going back to the main melody and an explosive ending. All around me people started aplauding and cheering and I completely lost it. They could've carried me away on a stretcher. Never have i experienced music so intensely and it changed me forever.

I heard that tune for the first time the year it came out. That was 40 years ago. This is the one tune I'd take on that proverbial desert island. It shakes me to the core every time I listen to it. This is the soundtrack of my life's movie. Happy times, sad times. This tune is all.

I cried, too, man... I love this song since I heard it for the first time back in 1989. I lost my dad this year...
I thought of him while listening to this song now, and it brought me to tears. I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan.
I almost died in 1992, and Pat's music was crucial to put my life back on track.
    Thanks for sharing this video!

I have loved this song since I first heard it close to 40 years ago. Your analysis and observations are spot on. It's great to hear this from someone who really knows about music and who can point out important details to the rest of us, so thanks for this.

This piece is inspiring and inspirational no doubt however without checking your other videos, I'm sure you'd most like agree with me that 'September Fifteenth' is ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS ever written and performed by two Master Musicians.

Dubbed. From a live concert DVD, Japan, about 1995. The original had Pedro on vocals. Different performances strung together.

Dude, you are my musical brother. I have the same reaction and have hard memories of college as we're about the same age I think. Metheny is the man. Would love to hear your thoughts on selections from his more recent stuff like "From This Place" and "Kin". Cheers.

Your're not a punk!! You had a spiritual experience. I am 71, and my first emotional experience with PMG was around 1983 with the song "It's For You", from the album As Falls Witchata, So Falls Witchata Falls. With a lot of his music, I get the metaphysical feeling of the presence of God, which always makes me emotional and often crying and shouting like a baby. I took the opportunity to write Pat to express my thoughts of the spiritual aspects of his music, to which he replied that there was nothing spiritual. Yet despite the greatness of Pat, Lyle is my favorite, and Lyle grew up performing in the church. For me First Circle is a proclamation of the presence of God. In God's presence I would be too excited to verbalize words, and would only be able to yell and chant like Pedro. "First Circle"..is Alpha and Omega..the beginning and the end. "Finding and Believing" is.. finally accepting Christ as your personal Savior and "The Way Up" is....the personal journey in life to the final transition to heaven. All music consists of only 12 notes, but when done right it's like Jesus when In Luke 4:18 he quotes Isaiah "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me....", . When the spirit of the Lord is upon me I'm gonna cry, shout and proclaim it to the world. Thanks for sharing and proclaiming one of Pat's masterpieces! Sharing with you three clips..."It's For You". Best live version of Pedro and Lyle "First Circle" the critically acclaimed Lyle Mays solo. I had most every recording Pat did (Hope you heard my story about how I found Pat). I would listen every night at bed. Years ago that song came on for the first time and woke me up- emotional and teary. I had to find out what the name of it was. So... Partner, my bedtime playlists have consisted of 80-90% Pat for at least 15-20 years. Ya know? I had trouble sleeping and it was the only thing that helped. (I-Heart Radio Pat station every night almost these days) . I produce mostly R&B Music, but my music theory and knowledge stems from PMG.@@jfs70ss

@@TheMusicMindset2023 Grew up listening to R&B and some Classic Rock. Got into Jazz in my early 20's. RTF, Chick, Al DiMeola, Yellowjackets, Jean Luc Ponty just for starters. Also Fania label stuff. I'm Hispanic so I love Salsa and Latin Jazz. Thanks for the reply. Will check out your video on how you found Pat and Lyle.
