This is a demonstration of the dynamic simulation and finite element analysis (FEA) environments in Autodesk Inventor 2011. I modernized a trebuchet to show some of the capabilities built into Autodesk Inventor. The demonstration shows how to do basic FEA, then I set up a dynamic simulation that launches a projectile from the system, and follow that up with another FEA using the motion loads generated by the simulation.

The ground is a part just like any other part in the assembly. You can dimension it to be as big or small as you want. I made mine a bit smaller because it is easier to work with during demos, but if I make the ground bigger the ball would actually hit it and roll off the end.

@JohnHelfen Aha, we can dial up and down the accuracy.
    Thank you for the answer!

@savata71 It is a combination of the number of calculations (set in the simulation player) and the velocity in which the arm is moving. I have dialed the accuracy down a bit to speed things up. To get the arm to contact at the bottom of the swing you could dial up the accuracy, but in this case that part is not important to me, so I didn't bother to change it.

John, thanks a lot for these videos. Are these dynamic FEA functions available in PrDS Ultimate?

    Thanks for these videos!
But why the arm doesn’t contact the ground at time=5:28?

It looks to me as if the "ground" is really that flat sheet, as the arm hits the underside of that sheet. Is there a way to model the "ground" as a half-space (infinite plane) instead?

I have created an "up and running in Inventor" and "Inventor essentials" course for Inventor at Lynda.com. You can check them out at www.lynda.com/johnhelfen Hope you enjoy them.
