I got an orchid from a nursery and the hard water stains were so bad i thought it was a case of mealy bugs. So glad you made this video. Always saving me and my orchids... cannot thank you enough
If it weren’t for this video I would have thought my new orchids came covered in powdery mildew and diseased. Although I’m new to caring for orchids, I’ve been watching you for years. Thats how I knew Miss Orchid Girl could help with the problem I had. THANK YOU for posting! Water residue. Lemon juice. What a relief. Now I know the problem and the easy fix ♥️
I use a paintbrush to remove salts or residues from my orchids and succulents to keep from smushing it into the pores of the leaves. Thanks for the tips!
The best idea ever! I've tried lemon juice on my orchids and bromeliads and they've never looked better! Thank you! It gives them a healthy, glossy shine.
Perfect video. Just received 3 new orchids from Earthly Orchids. Unfortunately, the leaves looked as though they had mildew on them and many leaves were broken. I was able to clean almost all of the black spots off of the leaves. I am hoping the broken leaves don't end being too unattractive but the leaves look much better after cleaning. I love these videos!
hi very nice video. so just to add that lime juice can also be used most time we buy new orchids they come full of residue. this is very easy way to get leaves looking as good as new. 😉
So i've recently started working at Trader Joes about a year ago when i moved to New York from Los Angeles and i picked up my 1st orchid about a week ago and i cant stop watching your videos to learn more info about how to take care of it and i might have developed a big of a new love for orchids and plants in general. Anyways thanks for the videos my plant looks pretty healthy but i just gotta change the pot and media now cuz i really dont like the pot or mosh its in... anyways take care.
A little late to the party, but omg I'm so glad I found this video. I was wondering what the chalky while blotches on my phal's leaves were, and I thought it was due to the water I mist them with every few days. I'm guessing that the water I use is probably hard water... Good to know that there's a solution for it :D
I mix my leaf cleaner with lemon juice, water, and some organic citrus liquid soap (i don't know where I got it, I just found it) and i put it in a spray bottle so I can spray the paper towel and rub the water stains/calcium deposits off, and the soap gives it a nice shine!
Hi, nope I don't rinse it off :) yep been using it for 3 years on various species with no bad effects, I would just stay away from the undersides if there are no deposits, mine was covered in 'chalk' sadly.
Hi Dani, thanks so much for this video. Have you ever tried water 1/4 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in a quart of water, spray a paper towel and wipe leaves top and bottom? I've heard of it and was wondering as it is cheaper than lemon juice. Thanks!
Hi, well depends how much it has been diluted from the company who produced it, it might not need dilution at all if it is watery enough :) yes you can do this on Phalaenopsis too.
Woowww exact ce imi trebuia! Chiar ma chinuiam azi sa curat frunzele de la doua phalaenopsis cu apa si nu prea mi-a iesit. Am doar 4 orhidei ... sunt incepatoare
Great video. Learning a lot since I subscribed to your channel. Just a quick question though. As lemons are not always available in my area, is it possible to use Apple Cider vinegar as an alternative? Thanks so much.
Hey Dani! I have started to add some species orchids to my collection and am wondering where I could find some info on care? I have a coelogyne trinervis and a species oncidium (I believe it's been reclassified to trichocentrum stramineum) and would like some specifics as to watering, light, etc. I can find info on more common varieties i.e. coelogyne cristata, but am a bit nervous in "guessing" as to how closely my specific orchids follow in care to similar orchids. Any advice would be helpful! Thank you!
Hi Danny, I really like this trick i am always using lemon juice. I have read on the internet that some use lemon juice on the roots of their vandas to balance the Ph value. What do you think about it? And thank you for making so great Videos i really love to learn something new from you about orchids.
Hi Kevin, I've read that too, but that they add lemon juice to the water to lower the pH :) first of all one must determine if they have a pH issue, cos if the pH is already low, adding lemon juice will get it to very low levels which are not ok for orchids. If the pH is high I can see how lemon juice can help :)
I love your information and what happened when cleaning with oil ? I see in you tube a video and the person who cleaned the own orchid uses oil and thanks to God I'd didn't ! Thanks again Dany.saludos with affect Lidia from San Diego.
I would try to be careful with oils, including mayonnaise, they leave a great shine but do clog up the pores on the underside and also make leaves more prone to sunburn.
Thank you for the AMAZING video!! 😊 I ever new you could use lemons for getting rid of salt deposits, thank for educating me!🎓 Sorry for asking again I'm REALLY curious, How is that phalaenopsis that your boyfriend is taking care of, he sounds like an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING person!😃
Any tips on cleaning oil off of leaves I received a few orchids from a friend they once belong to her mother who passed away. They were in a window in the kitchen near the stove and they were splattered with oil every time she cooked. The leaves are sticky and dusty. I would really like to remove the oil if I can, I'm really afraid it's gonna damage the plan if it stays there much longer.
A better test would have been to wash one half of each each with water and the other half with lemon juice solution. This would give a better "side-by-side" comparison for 2 reasons. One is that the comparison is more easily seen with each side cleaned with different solutions. The other reason is that the cause of discoloration on one leaf might be different on the other leaf. Other than that, your results were acceptable. But more impressive was your explanation for the difference in results. Knowing why the results were different is better because the observer can understand the reason for the results.
Hi, yes maybe the half half would have shown a more dramatic look indeed, but the deposit was the same and even on all leaves and medium even, so I don't think the half half would have added anything constructive to the experiment, it would have looked more striking though :P
:) one way to find out, get a pH tester and measure the pH of lemon juice ;) (ps: it should be around 2 www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/Chem_AcidsBasespHScale.shtml )

Glad it works, careful not to leave any lemon pulp on the leaves though!

Right, im off to the shops now to buy me some lemons!
Thank you for answering the question of why! Lemon juice will be the route I stick with(.)

I know I'm late to this but will lime juice work as well?
Looks like the lemon juice works wonders! Do you rinse it off? Is there ever any side effects? Have you tried it with other genera as well?
Hi, nope I don't rinse it off :) yep been using it for 3 years on various species with no bad effects, I would just stay away from the undersides if there are no deposits, mine was covered in 'chalk' sadly.
Thank you very much for this sooo useful information . May God bless you .
I bought two phals from a local orchid nursery and the grower used milk to clean the leaves on a cotton disc. I thought that was interesting.
I've just cleaned my orchid leaves with milk (semi skimmed lol).
Milk is actually used to kill mildew on roses and other plants. My family has used it for over 75 years.
Can you use lime juice?
Danny, this video said to clean the bottom of the leaves and another video you have said not to clean the bottom which is correct???
What would be your formula for putting your cleaning solution in a spray bottle ?
Hi Dani, thanks so much for this video. Have you ever tried water 1/4 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in a quart of water, spray a paper towel and wipe leaves top and bottom? I've heard of it and was wondering as it is cheaper than lemon juice. Thanks!
Will this burn the leaves if put in sun?
Dani, please tell me what can I do... I spy a little tiny ants in my orchids, hope you can answer I'm really worried, don't want to use any pesticide.
Does it kill anything if you water with lemon?l think I have some bugs in roots.
Hi, no it will have no effect.
I usually use white vinegard mixed with some water, same principle but maybe a little more cheap! :)
As long as you dilute it enough maybe it's ok :) careful with it falling on roots though
So if i'm using bottled lemon or lime juice, should I dilute it too?
Plus I can do this with my moth orchids too?
Hi, well depends how much it has been diluted from the company who produced it, it might not need dilution at all if it is watery enough :) yes you can do this on Phalaenopsis too.
Thanks, I had no idea how to do this.
hi danny can i ask what is the name of the orchid u first filmed
can lemon juice burn some kind of plant or it is totally safe on all plants?
Woowww exact ce imi trebuia! Chiar ma chinuiam azi sa curat frunzele de la doua phalaenopsis cu apa si nu prea mi-a iesit. Am doar 4 orhidei ... sunt incepatoare
Thanks for the demo! I happen to have a plant that could need some cleaning. :D
Make sure you combine it with some water and try to stir the pulp, that stuff can remain sticky on the plant but the juice is fine ;)
In the future does it going to harm the leaf
Thanks you..😊😊😊😊
you can also use milk
I used diluted white vinegar
Always enjoy your tips and advise, thankyou. Cheers Blessings
I prefer water over lemon juice because in my experience lemon juice leaves a sticky residue on the leaves.
Hi, did you strain the pulp of the lemon by chance?
Where do you order your pots?
Another tip, you're amazing!
Glad to help :)

Hi, I never owned these orchids so far so I cannot say from experience, but google is your friend and Roger gave you a great link :)

I thought that it was a big no,no to clean the back of the leaf of an orchid. Is it safe then? Thank you 😊
Faviola HgMtz hi, I do mention it later on in the video :)
sorry my bad I couldn't finish the video because I was getting ready for work. Thank you for answering. 😊
oh no problem :P and yes usually wiping the underside is not advisable :)
But wiping the backside of the leaf with a plain dry paper towel is fine, right?
amazing.
I guess your orchids are indoor. Right?
isnt that your new rhyncholaelia glauca? the plant is naturally glaucous but i guess washing it off shouldnt harm it
Hi, yes it is and don't worry, that was excess salt deposit, take a look at the medium ;)
Isn't that the glauca? Are you sure the grey on the back of the leaf is deposits- you know their leaves are naturally grey tinted or "glaucous"
Hi, yes it is and don't worry, that was excess salt deposit, take a look at the medium ;)
Hi Teran, it's okish :P when I arrived I needed to repot it, the roots were almost all rotten :P not his fault, the medium was bad ;)
Like it a lot...
nice....
ah nice :D will defenetly do that for my girls :)

Elizabeth Karnes she has another video on that. If you search her videos you'll get your answer.

@@MissOrchidGirl do you still use the lemon juice method to clean off leaves?
I use mayonnaise
Careful with that, it has oil and the leaf can easily get suffocated, especially the underside. Oil also makes leaves more prone to sunburn.
Lemon juice is not acidic but alkaline...
:) one way to find out, get a pH tester and measure the pH of lemon juice ;) (ps: it should be around 2 www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/Chem_AcidsBasespHScale.shtml )
