Ah good old winterpeg. I was posted there in the late 80’s and we would joke that there are two seasons in Winnipeg, construction and winter! Thanks for making my winter bearable!
Good video Jim that workout just time pulling off for a ice cream and waiting out the thunderstorm glad you made it to your friends place I am sure there was a lot of old stories gone over that's great take care have a great weekend
Thanks for the ride along Jim. I bet you were glad to get off the highway before the thunderstorm hit. Like you said, there isn't much room to park on the side of the highway. Great advice for taking a bath in a pond or lake. The last thing you want to do is mess with the critters that live there and add chemicals to their habitat. Catch you on the next one. Enjoy your weekend.
Got to have a little respect for all God's creatures. Not even an overpass for hours on the praires to hide under. That won't be the first sure day I have. At least a good shower helps cope with the heat.
Jim; Good video as always!! Enjoyed chatting with you on Don's Live Stream!!!! haha At one point Don said we were chatting!!!! haha That is one of Don's weaknesses, he doesn't keep up with his chats!! Started roofing garage yesterday. yuck!! God Bless safe ridin rubber down
Roofing! Not my favourite job. Did a garage once but I was just a young fella. I was 60 I think lol. I think it is hard to do a live stream and keep up with the chat... and Don does get to talking lol. Good chatting with you in the side.
@OldGuyonaBike for sure! I was actually headed to Nova Scotia last summer, but gave up at Thunder Bay after riding in rain, cold wind. Will try again next year. My first attempt at long distance riding. Just took on too much on the first day and the weather didn't help.
Good riding through the rain, be careful. Yeah Tim Hortons is my favourite place to stop....quick coffee with a washroom break and yer good to go! Happy New Year, ride safe and have fun.
That sucked about no water at the campground but you compromised well.........Kenora is a great little town and I always enjoyed going through there.............the stretch of highway between Kenora and Winnipeg is some memorable with the change of landscape......always so amazed by it...........Yup stopped at that Shell before.........the rain sure freshens things up on a hot day..............Oh thats a strange electical problem to have..........Oh been at the Petro before also...........been through Winnipeg once and found it hard getting around........took the outer square box highway everytime after that.......great episode Jim............
Luckily I was able to mostly go around Winnipeg. The electrical problem was/is odd. Would be gone for days and then show up. Times of moisture seem to have brought it on so I think a poor connection will turn out to be the culprit. Seems there are a lot of people who recognize that stretch of road and those gas stops.
That’s too funny! I almost met you at that same Shell gas station in Manitoba the same afternoon on July 20th. Listening you talking about that thunder shower, I was almost sure it was the same day but when you stopped there and said that they had a power failure, it confirms it. I stopped there at about 5:15 pm and the power was still not fixed. I was on my way to BC and after, my plan was to go down, Washington, Idaho, Montana and more but when I arrived in Medicine Hat, the smoke was beginning and Jasper was under fire so I decided to avoid this part and go first to the States to avoid the smoke ( last year’s trip to Yukon and Alaska in similar smokey conditions gave me lung problems for almost 2 months) and go after to BC, unfortunately it never improved in the following weeks and I finally came back by the States. From Medicine Hat, I crossed in Coutts AB to Montana I-15 and Great Falls. It would have been a big surprise meeting you there that afternoon 😄. I’m really enjoying this series as it is similar to my itinerary up to this point. Have you stopped at Centre of Canada?
Well shoot! You were only a few hours behind me. I was having a shower and a cold beer about the time you got to that service station. I'm about to go to see friends in Saskatchewan and then head down thru ND to SD and then over to Montana. I think I came back into Canada through Coutts. We probably came close to crosing paths a few times, Marc. Not sure where "Centre of Canada" is. Will have to google.
Buddy of mine took a Goldwing west a few years back just did it again on a Harley Tri said the little added stability was well worth it in weather and gravel
I'll probably go to sidecar before I will go to trike but I know they work well for many. I'm going to try to stay in the wind as long as I can one way or another.
not sure if you already had a video on this but would love it if you give us a tour of your Mini Mate ond options I'm curious about the color cell on top.Thank you for videos
I do have a couple of videos on the solar system. I have done upgrades since and will do a new video this spring. There is now a 100 watt panel that I mount on top and it usually keeps the 2 x 30 Ah batteries topped up during the ride in the day. I have another 40 watt I add in camp. This video will give you an idea of where I started. ruclips.net/video/lkAJfhTPy4w/видео.html
Dear Mr. Old Guy, In my eyes, being both retired and loving (and going on) motorcycle adventures makes you a superhero. I long for the opportunity to partake in journeys like yours, and I appreciate your style greatly. One queation and observation: What trailer hitch do you have on your GL1500? Observation is that you dont pick up your feet onto the pegs soon enough when starting out (for my liking) - i dont want you to break an ankle. Thanks for the time and effort to share your experiences with me. I get a lot out of it.
I am not sure of the trailer hitch manufacturer. Almost impossible to find one for a GL1500. It was already there and was a key selling point for me getting this bike. I am particularily bad with raising my left foot. Always have. The right foot goes up immediately but I seem to take longer with the left as long as in first gear. Once sifting to 2nd, it stays up. I do wear out left boots faster than right. Bad habit? Bad balance? Think I have fast reflexs? Haven't caught it on anything in 50+ years but I am sure there will be a first time.
@OldGuyonaBike I have a 99 gl1500SE without a hitch. My riding buddy has a minimate that he tows with a can am spyder. We've talked about going to Newfoundland this summer or to James Bay, QC (from Maine). I'm intrigued by your tour, but the 'loss' of two days on a ferry makes it hard. Newfoundland will happen, but maybe not this summer - at least not for 2 weeks. All the best. Keep that foot up! :😀
To bad I didn't find your block sooner. On your way to Manitoba you would have passed about 100k up the 105 from where I am, Bobbies corners as I've mentioned before is a great place to stop for gas & rest & get some fast food grub at the food trailer (if you don't mind the wait). Again safe travels
Always hard to find people in real time. I don't finese my plans until a day or two before and of course my videos can be 3 months to a year after the fact.
As far as your light issue goes, have you tried disconnecting the trailer harness to isolate it from your bike ?. If it goes away, you know where to start looking. Might be a puddle of rain water shorting out .,,
It's there when the trailer is unhooked. Will have a chance to look for it in April. Corrosion or bad relay I suspect. Too much plastic to take off for me to really look for it on the road. Wasn't always a problem and some days it was only for half the day.
I just picked up the Goldwing in April of this year with 138,000 km on it. Previous to that I had an ST1300 for 17 years (wrote it off in 2023), a CB750 before that, a BMW R75/5 and then a few smaller bikes. Thanks for coming along and yes, get out there and have some adventures.
You must have been asked and answered this question long ago and I’ve just missed it, Jim: What’s the story on the “V6” badge on the back of the trunk? The former owner’s little “joke” about the opposed six-cylinder Wing?
Yes lol and yes. Previous owner loved chrome. They are well glued on and a great conversation starter. I sometimes tell people the bike is an experimental one with two extra cylinders added to the ST1300 engine.
"Glad I was nt following that guy too close." LOL. Of course you were not, cuz that's how grey haired bikers get to be grey haired bikers! Ride on, and thank you for taking us along.

Thanks Victor. I have enough footage to keep me posting all winter and then I just have to start it all again.
Another ride for the books. Thanks, Jim, safe travels.
I'll get to the west coast yet. One day at a time.
