Its interesting everyone is saying this was awkward. Maybe its a cultural difference in the way we socialize and joke around. Im Mexican, and I find this completely normal, she is just joking around not being awkward. And I would say there are differences, but I still have canadian, american and english friends whom I can joke with about pretty much everything (as a frenchie). It's just about being natural and with open-minded, fun people I guess.
To american people : she's pregnant so this is the reason she's wearing that weird dress, and maybe the reason why she seems a bit tired and so "awkward". I've read the comments before I watched the video and I didn't find this interview as awkward as I thought it was gonna be. To me, she seems to be in a state of mind that is: "To thwart my anxiety, I'm gonna impose myself a 'whatever' attitude". To me, this is the reason why she seems a bit tired, or out of it. But overall, I like many things she said, and Stephen Colbert has definitely done a good job: diminishing as much as he could, cultural and language barriers to make it more comfortable for both Marion Cotillard and the native audience -- that is, according to me, a big challenge, and if, as a viewer, we don't take it into account, the 'awkwardness' answer will emerge. I like her more and more, and I really admire Stephen Colbert!
I don't think it's really that she's anxious or awkward that gives her that persona. 2:07 This is the absolute worst question you can ask an educated person from outside the US. I usually love Colbert but he made the very american mistake of asking that question as if talking to a child. It is like it's a foreign concept to americans that people from other countries actually know their shit. If we're going into things we *dont understand* about America (referring to the middle part of N-America) 1) what's with the two party system? How is that beneficial? 2) What's with the electoral college? (I know how it functions but it's supposed use eludes me) 3) Why do you have the need to spend so much on your military while your nation's infrastructure is crumbling and your only (self-created) enemies are in the middle east, incapable of mounting an offensive? 4) Oil. That's not a question, but more of a reference to the previous one. Greedy bastard government. 5) Why is is that you think that you are the only country with freedom? Most civilized countries have more not-gun-related freedoms than you do. 6) Why do you call yourself great? The only thing you're great at is having the most guns. Infant death-rate in the US is appalling and education is barely worthy of *not* being called third-world rate. 7) Why is it that you consider yourselves a "world police"? (see point 4 for answer) 8) And finally, what the fuck is up with you considering countries that actually have their shit together as inferior? Why does half the population treat foreigners as if they're still using typewriters and switchboards?( slight reference to point 5) Three questions I was actually asked when I've been in the US (I'm from Iceland) 1: Do you tame polar bears or just let them roam? 2: Do you have actual houses or just snowhouses? 3: Do you have internet there? It's this thing that connects computers together. (When I said "what?" in disbelief the lady went on to explain that computers were like calculators that did more than calculators) What we don't understand about the US is how the hell you can be so obsessed with yourselves while still finding the time to completely fuck up entire parts of the earth. That's the end of my rant. Yes I'm bitter, yes I'm an asshole but one can get fed up.
"We have a whole world in ourselves (...) Going through different people, different cultures I open myself to more and more understanding of a human being and then of myself" - beautiful

I think it was awkward because he was asking her questions you'd ask a 10 year old at the start. 'Do you have elections over there?' was almost a bit insulting to be honest. Not trying to hate, just obvious
It's celebrated much more here in America though, and Europeans celebrate it differently. Back when I lived in Germany, almost nobody celebrated halloween
***** Stephen was asking if she celebrated Halloween in France, which she replied "you know it comes from Europe" which is honestly a bit of a stretch, it originates from Celtic practices in Ireland that were not really celebrated anywhere else. The Irish brought some of these practices to America, where it got mixed with some Scottish traditions and eventually over time became what we know as Halloween. So why you could argue that Halloween "comes from Ireland," our modern version of Halloween really comes from America, and it was America that popularized it. All this is irrelevant anyway, because the question was "do you celebrate Halloween?" Not "have you heard of Halloween," or "do you know where Halloween comes from?" And she even admits later on that Halloween is not popular in France, so where Halloween originated from was really kind of irrelevant to the question.
In central europe we don't have Halloween, we have Spirits night. We don't go around, prancing in costumes, we go visit our lost loved ones. Instead of making it all about dressing as a slutty nurse and getting drunk, or children salvaging candy, we go visit graves, it's very nostalgic and sad, but also full of loving memories for your lost loved ones. Sooo yeah, almost every single country has their origin about spirit and dead ones. America just commercialized it, forgot the real reason and made it about candy and costumes.
Yo she consistently slayed Mr Colbert throughout this. I feel bad for her, as Stephen was kinda slipping into his parody character and came across as bleh
I just watched Allied but didn't know who she is.....I assumed she was an English actress because her English accent was impeccable....then later I was stunned to learn she is 40, French and a musician. But most importantly her acting was perfect and I now love her
"Marion Cotillard admits sex scenes with Brad Pitt were 'awkward' that is literally the first headline that popped up when I googled her name...oh wait FOX news is the source
I'm confused though. Where in this interview does she say they were "not awkward". She never says that. If anything she actually eludes to it with her 'sex in front of the audience' analogy.
This is absolutely fascinating. Only once does a guest come along who doesn't imitate Stephen's specific sense of humor, and he's completely unable to adjust to it. It's hard to believe how clumsy he is.

(see point 4 for answer)
8) And finally, what the fuck is up with you considering countries that actually have their shit together as inferior? Why does half the population treat foreigners as if they're still using typewriters and switchboards?( slight reference to point 5)
Three questions I was actually asked when I've been in the US (I'm from Iceland)
1: Do you tame polar bears or just let them roam?
2: Do you have actual houses or just snowhouses?
3: Do you have internet there? It's this thing that connects computers together. (When I said "what?" in disbelief the lady went on to explain that computers were like calculators that did more than calculators)
What we don't understand about the US is how the hell you can be so obsessed with yourselves while still finding the time to completely fuck up entire parts of the earth.
That's the end of my rant. Yes I'm bitter, yes I'm an asshole but one can get fed up.
He was just trying to get a trump comment in his show, as usual.
She's immensely witty, cool, charming, gorgeous, articulated, pretty & talented person. And/but, in my head, I see Cecily Strong, too, here :D
99% sure the person who titled this video was busting up over the irony
She is stunning and I love her sarcasm/dry humour.
Her sense of humour is genius, I love it!
She's funny without even trying.
This is actually funny. Yall just hating. Humor not too dry; very funny
"We have a whole world in ourselves (...) Going through different people, different cultures I open myself to more and more understanding of a human being and then of myself" - beautiful
I think she gave the plot away.
I find it not awkward at all. Pure European vibe.
Why do people keep bringing up the fact that she’s European like you do realize not all European acts like this .
Omg she is so cute. her eyes look so soft and lovely
She’s so culturally true to her roots and patient with the stereotypical Unaware American
Yup. Nothing have changed since Taxi, I still have a crush on her.
First french actor win oscar...I really like the way they talk, they know how to make people comfortable with most simple way, their politeness and humble natural style ,the graceful DNA is irreplaceable
I never realized how funny she is.
I love how witty and quick she is as well. :D
marion is so charming. stephen is a great interviewer and listener. I'm watching this for the entire 10 minutes.
I think it was awkward because he was asking her questions you'd ask a 10 year old at the start. 'Do you have elections over there?' was almost a bit insulting to be honest. Not trying to hate, just obvious
she is truly amazing in all her films
She's so funny!! What a charming lady
She's right about halloween it comes from Europe lol.
I love both of them they're so cool! :D
It's celebrated much more here in America though, and Europeans celebrate it differently. Back when I lived in Germany, almost nobody celebrated halloween
Tim Nichols Yeah exactly!
Actually if you have seen the series Outlander in the very first episode they do talk about the origin of Halloween
She is the most beautiful woman in the world.
But most importantly her acting was perfect and I now love her
She is a great person to watch both on the screen n in an interview, natural, not a snob, thats what makes her look graceful, thanks, Marion.....
Can stephen colbert not go one show without trashing America or talking about trump
It's all on his own show...
This interview was "not awkward"
I love her humor so much!!!!
She is so french in a real way in a GOOD way .
That's how we kiss in the Middle East too, sometimes it's way more than 4
( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)
Need to visit there sometime :D
so true, and i hate it haha because it can be very awkward
Kim Jung that's not very nice to say
Kim Jung
Racist Fucking Basterd 😨😱
XZoro X the men kiss each other
She's very awkward and looks scared.
.......and she interrupts Stephen on almost every single sentence.
Uncomfortable to watch actually.
Stephen handles her perfectly though.
+MoodMusic
Not criticizing her looks dumbass. lol
+MoodMusic
Fair enough :p
Its actually not that awkward for her. The french have a different sense of humor which is what shes used to.
nah shes being French. Not scared that culture just isn't as boisterous
she's very charming and funny...love her
She is such an amazing actress hope she gets her 3rd oscar nomination.I'm rooting for her ;-)
This is absolutely fascinating. Only once does a guest come along who doesn't imitate Stephen's specific sense of humor, and he's completely unable to adjust to it.
It's hard to believe how clumsy he is.
She is very genuine she isn't a liar she sais it like it is .. I personally lost it at I need to check out Wikipedia LOL she is an amazing actress and seems person as well . I love her accent and voice so soothing what a class act
doesn’t matter if you’re French or American… wherever you live as a foreigner you can relate to Marion as the person living abroad
"They said I could be anything so I became a curtain"
It's just me or Stephen Colbert was trying so bad to talk about the elections?
he always does it's getting annoying
That's dumb considering the fact that his previous show was purely political.
Analogicmatheus he is in genuine shock at the results. Typically I find his humor funny despite my views being different, but now I'm just exhausted of all politics
***** I feel the same about him...
Her accent popped up when she said “no”.
She said "Non"
it's not accent, it's almost french lol
She said it in french
@@miche6444 not almost french it's french
SHE IS LOVELY
She is such a Queen! Love her responses :))
How is this interview awkward?! I find it just fine with humour, right questions and wits from both Stephen and Marion!
she is not only really beautiful and funny but also very smart ....and amazing mother i gathered
She's so lovely.
