Still riding my 1970 Triumph 500. Runs fine, burns no oil, doesn't leak, easy to work on, always puts a smile on my face.
If it puts a smile on your face, that’s all that matters. I’ve been riding for 40 years. I just happen to have a 2023 Yamaha MT 10 that
I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of. Just thinking about riding it puts a smile on my face let alone actually riding it!
In the 80's I built from parts and basketcases, 2 unit Triumps 1 BSA T-Bolt and a 59 preunit 650 Triumph. The only one that I couldn't get oil tite was the pre unit. I get triggered when people say "If a Triumph aint leaking, then its out of oil." your 500 may be the best Triumph. I was in a British MC and the 500's were sought after
Automobiles, Appliances, farmers no longer able to repair their John Deere equipment, music that you don't actually own anymore because it sits in Cyberspace, made in China... I could go on and on and on! I now call it the "Shitification of all things!.
Hahaha. I hear ya.
Just wait my friend, It is going to get worse in a short time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its not just motorcycles. RVs and boats too.
When homes cost 80% of your income, few have money/space for toys.
Agreed 👍
And if you can squeeze a few bucks out, interest rates are 10% and up .
Very true. Inflation has been very challenging. Another big influence is interest rates. That monthly payment can be the difference in 'want' vs need.
Reality is, dealers are just ripping off buyers with all those extra hidden fees. It is ridiculous.
You are Absolutely right and it happens not only in the state, the same thing happens in Canada! Add to that the exchange rate between the currencies and it's almost impossible to own a bike in Canada!!!!!
Motorcycles are luxury items and citizens don’t have disposable income. Simple.
Everything is so expensive these days. $15-20K for a motorcycle is nuts. they are toys. for the most part. how many people have $15k to spend on a toy???!!! and some bikes are even $30k.
The price of everything went up when Biden shut down our oil independency
Harley went woke the customers went out the door.
That seems to be going around a lot of companies unfortunately. I'm happy to vote with my wallet. I'd rather do business with a company that doesn't hate me or tell me their beliefs. Just sell bikes. Thanks for watching
Harley went ''Woke'' and then they became ''Broke''.
P.S. Woke is a Joke!
How did they go woke ? What do you mean ? They got greedy !
That makes sense on top of that they always made junk for dirt bags
Out of all the people claiming the reason for not buying a HD is because of wokeism, how many do you think were going to actually buy one?
I still love bikes.rode, my whole life, street, and dirt, and im 65. Think bikes have priced themselves out of the market, just like cars.Remember buying a brand new Suzuki GS 750. 1978for1999.Miss those days.
me too i am 80
same here .. started riding dirt bikes as a teen in 1970 and have owned all kinds of bikes since. Still own 3 Harley’s, a snowmobile and recently bought a SxS. The cheapest HD is pretty much 20k+ and snowmobiles are 12k+. The only reason I bought my SxS this past October was because of a 4k rebate (Yamaha) and the dealer knocked off another 1k.
Yes! While in the USMC stationed at Camp Pendleton, I bought a brand new 1976 Honda 350 for $999.
In 1977 I bought a leftover 1975 Honda CR250 Elsinore from a local dealer. New retail in '75 was $1295 plus all the usual add ons. I got it out the door, tax and all for $649. AHH the good times !
Good video! The end of last year I was speaking to my local Triumph dealer about a 2023 Thruxton RS and Triumph dropped prices about $3000 for about two weeks and then bumped them right back to MSRP which was $17,999 approx. I asked the salesman to give me the discounted price and he said the owner said no! Which I would have bought at that price. I left and the bike is still there. That was around March of last year. I won’t darken their doors again.
That's crazy. In my day, dealers wanted to actually SELL bikes, not leave them on the floor for 2 years until the right FOOL with money burning a hole in their pocket comes along and buys them for a ridiculously marked-up price.
It's not just the motorcycle industry ... it's the outdoor industry as a whole. It dropped off the cliff end of Q3 , 23'
Absolutely. I did mention that and I was standing in front of my Honda Talon SXS. The auto industry certainly need a huge correction. The dealers are the real muggers here.
@@azdesertdog Not just dealers. For example, Ford introduced a new Mustang version for 2024 but now for the 2025 model year they have jacked up the MSRP by an additional 8% on the V8 powered cars with minimal if any additional changes. It's like they are trying to subsidize their money losing EV efforts by gouging Mustang buyers.
Have you bought food lately??
I think the side by side ATVs hurt motorcycle sales.
All the moto dealers in my area sell side by side very few motorcycles.
I don't know the stats I bet SXS ATV sales out pace motorcycles (at least dirtbikes) in the southwest US. Most powersports are taking a huge hit.
I stopped buying new bikes when deakers started charging over MSRP and stopped allowing test rides. That was around 2015 in California.
I jumped out of the new market a few years ago. In my state there's no tax on used vehicles not purchased at a dealer. Makes sense.
HD has demo days here in Ohio
I have been riding for well over 50 years and have owned over 40 bikes, and only 2 were bought new. All were extremely nice and dependable however, and with really low miles. Motorcycles are not like cars and trucks. Hundreds if not thousands of people buy them every year and just park them in a garage, only to discover that motorcycling isn’t for them. These like new bikes can be bought on the usual forums at a fraction of their cost when new. 3-5 years old with 3-5k miles on the odometer has always been the sweet spot for me.
I recently bougt a nice 2004 883 with only 14K on it and p/o changed everything I would have!!
@ yep. That’s another reason to buy used. They are often already farkled to the max at a fraction of the cost if you did it yourself.
Lower the prices and treat customers like they are not idiots.
I do so much research on a motorcycle before I even go to the dealer. most of the time I know more about that motorcycle than they do. The motorcycles are dirty. fingerprints all over the motorcycle instead of sitting around all day pick up a fiber cloth and clean them. Hello
Moto Guzzi is making good bikes now, real good!!
They do, but are too small for my 6'1" frame.
1)The used market is always flooded with great bikes with a few hundred miles on them Can get essentially a new bike used for $2,000 or more less than dealers.
2) Dealers were taking orders for bikes that took a year to fill. Covid caused a shortage of bikes during a rare time when everyone wanted toys to keep them busy
3). Lack of inventory caused new and used bikes to soar much higher than they were worth. Prices of Bikes and Trucks are finally falling back to normal.
4) Some are falling for cheap Chinese and British bikes.
Have done 20,000 miles a year the last 2 years, expect to do the same or more in 2025. Have 2 friends my age (mid-50’s) who just bought their first bikes (Ducati and Yamaha).
I ride a Triumph, full-steam ahead.
I saw brand new 2 years old unsold units sitting in the showroom of the Harley Davidson dealers. With aftermarket bling, not even Harley Davidson performance parts. Then they want full list prices, and the additional fees for the parts.
Our fleet department dropped 10K on Harley Davidson parts during one year at our dealer. We couldn't get them to throw in a tee shirt for our business.
I asked about their rental program, back in 2018. I was told then that it was between $185-$225 a day to rent a Harley. I can only imagine what they want today to rent.
I know of 3 dealers in my area that have gone under. Not one dealer announced a sale, or any incentives.
I also saw a dealer that put in an outdoor music venue. Who pays for that? You do. As far as I'm concerned, Harley Davidson is a clothing store that occasionally sells a motorcycle. But not to me.
I'm curious what effect ot will have on the dealers in my area. About 10 years ago all the small dealers were gone. We are left with just big box dealerships. They've been holding on. We'll see.
I've watched motorcycle prices rise and fall for nearly 50 years. When the economy takes a dump and fuel prices are high used bike prices are high. new bikes don't move. Then when the economy stabilizes the used prices come down... This time is a bit different, banks are not wanting to lend and interest rates are ridiculous. Dealers think they are sitting on a gold mine when actually they are holding a pin less pineapple!
I was talking to an R/E dealer about a new model that I'm interested in and he immediately started to try and sell me on another model that he had in stock for the reduced price of $1,500 over msrp. I just laughed and said No Thanks.
Be patient boy's and girls, The dealers are going to be hurting when the bank wants the check for flooring!
1965 August here. Interesting segment. And enjoyed the knowledge. Thanks.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Prior to the China Virus I purchased a CRF450R brand new. When the dealers ran out of stock they were calling me to buy my bike that had 10 hrs of practice on the clock. I eventually sold it to a dealer. He paid me $3200 over the total cost I had financed on it. When I delivered the bike, their dealership had NO Hondas on the floor. The sales manager showed me a list of over 20 people looking for that bike. I wonder what his markup must have been 🤔
Thanks for your take on the motorcycle market in the US. Prices are definitely down in Australia. As a keen frequent buyer and seller I have observed the same sorts of patterns here. Some people have had their bike on the market for two years with a fairytale price in mind. I have just sold three bikes and had to price them keenly to find a buyer. That was offset by buying a low milage fully optioned 21 R1250GS Triple Black for just 55% of the price the seller paid new 3.5 years ago. Getting good discounts on some Harley Davidsons models here too from the stealerships (after a massively bloated initial price). The most discounted bikes are the 24 Low Rider ST and 23 Road/ Street Glide that have a new updated models. The Nightster Special / Sportster S prices are way down, no one wants one. CF Moto is gaining acceptance here, the 450 MT (Ibex) is selling very well.
It's good to hear from you sir. I see by your channel icon you have an R18. That's an amazing motorcycle. I was on the hunt for one recently. I have freinds that have CF Moto and other Chinese brands. They are impressive. I remember my dad would ride Japanese motorcycles in the 60s/70s people said they were junk. Now they are the most reliable bikes out there.
@@azdesertdog Yes had the R18 for about a year. Done lots of cosmetic mods and a shorty loud exhaust on it. Absolutely gorgeous. Great second or third bike. Not very popular so there are some amazing low km deals out there. Easy to buy but hard to sell. Love your Indian scout. The Chinese bike acceptance is definitely following the Japanese bike model from the late 60's &
70's. More for less :>)
I don't know if CF Moto reliability and longevity is known.
I remember the first big market crash for the Japanese manufacturers in the early 1980s. They seriously over produced bikes, and had to sell them at a loss, which caused a drop in the value of previous year bikes that people had paid full price for. I bought a couple of new bikes during that time.
The way I see it, the motorcycle industry has a lot of problems right now, some they caused, and others caused by the economy. They have followed the automotive industry with all their computerized TRASH. Not only are these bikes just plain no fun to own or ride for many older people like me that grew up riding actual MACHINES, but their cost has gone through the roof. And even if you can afford the price, they will never really be yours. They will always be dependent on the manufacturer for repairs, and for most of the more expensive ones, WiFi software updates. And it seems that the manufacturers and dealers have decided that they will only support them for 10 years. After that they become pretty much worthless. That is a serious issue, especially for H-D. Independent shops can't work on them because they don't have the dealer only computerized diagnostic equipment, and in many cases, can't get parts. And even if you can get a part, on bikes that use CANbus electronic systems, those parts have to be "programmed" before they can communicate with other electronic parts, which can only be done by a dealer. They cannot be modified, they cannot be tuned, at least without invalidating the warranty. The ones with "always on" WiFi connections spy on you, and send your personal information back to the manufacturer, just like new cars. No matter how much you pay for the bike, it will have an artificially created 10 year life span. They are made to be disposable.
Another issue for me is that I am mostly a cruiser rider, and manufacturers are no longer making new cruisers. And almost everything you can get now is going to be at least 90% flat black. No thanks. I am not going to buy a black motorcycle. I like bright shiny colors, bright aluminum, and lots of chrome. I have owned around 40 motorcycles in my life, well over half of them bought new. They have all been carbureted, and none of them have been black. Motorcycle manufacturers no longer make ANYTHING I want, even if I could afford it. When I was young, I was constantly trading in almost new bikes. I lost a fortune that way. But that has come to an end.
I currently own five bikes. One of them is a 2006 Kawasaki KLR650, which I bought new, but have had to give up riding because of health issues. I can no longer even get my leg over the seat without standing on something. I have a 2013 Royal Enfield Classic 500, also bought new, which came with EFI. It was a very primitive system, which I almost immediately replaced with an Amal carburetor, using a kit from a place called Hitchcocks in the UK. The other three are a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 750, bought new, and two Harleys, a 1989 FXRS Low Rider, bought used in near showroom condition in 2003, and a 2002 Sportster 1200C, also bought used in 2016 in near new condition. At my age, and in my condition, I should have enough non computerized, non flat black bikes to easily last me for the rest of my riding life. I'm already considering converting the Sportster into a trike.
You are right about dealers still scamming people. But there are a couple of chain dealers in my area that have always done that. RIDE NOW, known locally as Ride Never or Ripoff Now, and GOAZ Powersports, will literally DOUBLE the price of a new bike with all their bogus add on fees. RIDE NOW, which started as Town and Country Honda back in 1984, in Chandler, AZ, in an abandoned tin shed, now has several locations in at least five different states. I tried to buy a new Magna 700 from them in 1985. We already had the deal made, and everything on paper. I drove several miles to my insurance agent, got insurance on it, went back to pick it up, and they had added over $300 more in bogus charges. I told them no, they refused to remove the charges, so I walked out. I had to go back to my insurance agent and cancel the insurance.
Yep. And it's not green at all to be junking perfectly good cars and bikes just because the electronics make them unrepairable or too expensive to fix.
Thanks for watching Gerald. I agree with you. My friend, you have left the longest comment in my 15 years on RUclips. That's awesome. Ride safe my friend.
Thanks for your generous post... Before I got to the part that mentions your Harleys, I thought: Get a previous generation Sportster, or an EVO or Twin-Cam Harley. There will be parts for those for a long time... Maybe a friend/riding partner can help you get on the KLR650 and ride with you on surfaces other than regular pavement if you have a minor spill in some sand or whatever. When I had my KLR, I had now experience riding in sand and kept falling off it at low speeds. LOL. I heard the KLR community is very supportive... How are parts availability for the Vulcan 750?... If you would like a new bike for whatever reason, the Suzuki SV650 has been around a long time and there are many out there, so parts should be available for a long time, even if the aftermarket has to get involved. Take care, be safe, be well.
those days the Jap's Big 4 agreed to flood the US market for cost and sometimes a loss, to put HD out of business. That is unfair trade and Raegan put tarrifs on those Japbikes to even the score. The sneaky Japs orchestrated the sell at loss for that reason.
I took almost all last years riding season off. I had a few really close calls due to drivers not paying attention, then I read more than enough of local news stories of motorcyclists dying. It’s just scared me for the season. I’m past it now and have the itch real bad to get out and ride.
But the general driving public is exactly what really is causing less motorcyclist on the road.
People don’t feel safe because of too many distractions. And it isn’t like self driving has perfected to the point where it can recognize motorcyclists.
I get it. I ride alert without distraction no radio etc. I ride off peak traffic times. I ride to non populated areas (easier in AZ and I live in a rural area). I've stopped commuting and raised my quality of gear. Be safe.
In the city I live in Canada we have about 10-12 motorcycle fatalities per year and they all have several things in commom, sport bikes driving at excessive speed. Thats it!
The average age of a motorcyclist in the US is 50 years old. 1 in 3 motorcycles sold in the US is a Harley Davidson. Anyone producing small, approachable and affordable motorcycles are seeing good sales with those models (Triumph, Royal Enfield). That says a lot about the state of the market today.
I rode for 30 years, but 15 years ago the risk from distracted drivers on cell phones made me quit. I bought a sports car.
That’s to bad
Separates the boys from the men
In 1978 my buddy who worked for the importer on the west coast showed me about a dozen unsold 1977 CB750A Hondas in the warehouse that were being sent to the crusher. Another time he told me about something similiar in regards to half a dozen unsold CBX six cylinder models that were a couple of years old and withdrawn from available stock. The CBX was so unpopular when introduced that Honda resorted to equipping them with windshields and saddle bags in a last ditch effort. In 1984 I bought a leftover 1983 FT500 Ascot for $900. The retail price on them was $2395 and the dealers could not sell them. From time to time, if you have the cash, you can grab a bargain. In my 50 years of riding, and buying experience, I've seen the market tank four or five times.
I've felt the gouging most with the Euro brands and their sneaky service warnings. First, they started having service lights you could manually reset, then, they made it dealer-only reset (but it was reasonably hackable), then they locked it down hard. It made them big $$, so their next move has been to make it an annual thing as well. As a long-time Euro-bike and Iapanese bike owner, I am only too happy to buy exclusively Japanese. Let the greed of the Euro-brands be their downfall!
It's amazing that years ago it was less expensive to ride a motorcycle. In the modern day the cost is actually more.
In the 60's and 70's registering a motorcycle cost about 4 dollars and a car was about 20 dollars. These days registering a bike is about 50 dollars and a car is 55.
I think that sensible functional and reasonable price motorcycles are on the decline
Motorcycles have become expensive, and when your newest bike is 30yrs old and has zero market value it's hard to upgrade to something newer.
Frank, you may be in better shape than anyone else.
At least Yamaha got smart by doing demo events every single year. I’ve gone to everyone for the past four years and holy crap they got me. The first time I rode the 2023 Yamaha MT 10 I knew I was done. I ended up trading my Kawasaki Z 900 RS for a Yamaha and haven’t looked back.
They’re one of the only manufacturers doing these demos and I’ve gotta tell you I’ve ridden everything in their lineup and 90% of it is freaking amazing.
Do you think motorcycle riders are on the decline?
Hey LM. Sales figures don't lie. They have fallen off a cliff over the last two years.
@ Everything is so overpriced. Maybe things will start coming down now that there’s a new sheriff in town
Yes. The masses aren't buying them like they did in the heyday, but those that are in the hobby are probably at least as passionate as they ever were. That's why they are all over the place like fireflies at the major riding destinations. But the everyday person is too afraid to ride a motorcycle now and that's the part that people aren't talking about while they try to blame all of it on money. I've had this conversation with several people. Most people under 40 grew up under the notion that the amount of acceptable risk is ZERO, regardless of the potential reward. There are breakaways of course but by and large they were made paranoid by the school system, tricycle helmets, and more recently by masks.
@@ronvaughan8041 It’s the everyone gets a trophy generation
Too many drivers, not paying attention on their cell phones rather than watching and driving defensively
interesting subject thanks for sharing your knowledge and have a wonderful day
Thanks RG! Stay warm up there.
There is a used bike dealership near Daytona that adds an $1195.00 to every sale. Yes, they put new tires ( cheap ) and oil and filter, but that's MAYBE $400 real money. WHY the ridiculous add ons? ( and this was 4 years ago )
I think Triumph, Ducati and Royal Enfield and Japanese manufacturers for sure will survive. Harley is a wild card. Another factor you didn’t mention that heavily affects this downturn that didn’t exist in the past was how many fewer riders there are.
Outta of curiosity I searched cycle trader for KTM products and didn’t see too many discounts. At least not what I’d expect to see being that they have 300k in excess inventory.
Agreed. I think KTM is holding back until new ownership. I think if you go into or call the dealerships you can make a great deal. I don't think their at the point of advertising the fire sale.
And a lot of older riders getting out.
I'm 59, been riding for years, many of my riding buddies have given up on it. Some I never thought would throw in the towel.
"LUCY" (that heartbreaking video you did will never leave me) if memory serves.... Another Great video.... "Dawg" - I have seen many videos that are in this same "vein" with respect to car dealerships / manufacturers as well. Very interesting to see what comes in the next several months / years. I will say this, Great video, well researched, and informative. Well done !!!
Cheers Brother !!!
Thank you sir. We still miss Lucy for sure. I think we will see the full effect across all vehicle markets in the spring. It depends on what kind of turnaround we have and interest rates.
We had 10 years of great sales because the baby boomers were all in mid life crisis mode. Well they are all in geriatric crisis mode now and the manufacturers thought the surge of sales would last forever. There were no smaller cheap motorcycles to entice new riders. The bigger is better and more horsepower and fancy gadgets have priced the market for only the 10% rich.
Yep. I'm not a fan of all the gadgets.
Gimme 2009 performance, technology and price.
At 74 years of age, I decided that I no longer have the reflexes to dodge the ever increasing number and size of the potholes in the roads, especially the freeways. I also have serious concerns with the vast number of unlicensed and intoxicated cage drivers. So I sold my cruiser bike and bought a new Vespa just to ride around town. I can still have some fun.
The problem is recreational vehicles, are not necessary. Food shelter a car that you have to live in because you can’t afford anything else. All started with Henry Ford making horseless buggies cheaper than motorcycles with sidecar.
Thanks for watching, Joseph. That is certainly the top factor. Eggs are $8 a dozen.
Harley was the first to start to show cracks in the foundation but others are definitely showing signs now too. I’ve been noticing the last couple years that classic bike prices have been coming down. That inflation really took the sales out of toys. Hopefully changes can improve that.
Spot on. I think we'll see the real correction or turn around in June. Lots of new models with expensive R&D are coming out.
WELL DONE SIR! Scribed
Thank you!
rode many years...gave it up in 2010....too many "Licensed Idiots" in cars and trucks....very UNSAFE for MC riders
For sure. I keep away from cities and group rides. Unfortunately there is big risk to the sport. A friend of mine lost his leg this year.
Ride Dual Sport my friends. You will crash more off-road in the beginning. Wear armor on feet, hands, elbows back and shoulders and head. Much better scenery and far less severe in a crash 67 years old and having a blast
The same is happening over here in the uk.too many greedy dealers shops etc,
I've bought a couple HDs. I didn't really experience antics. Of course they asked for too much, but then we made deals just like I have with salespeople going back to the caveman days.
I just bought an Indian Scout. Fun little bike. I like the way they integrated radiator on the new ones, but the machining on the engine looks way better. Makes a real difference on the left side. Mine is mostly black. The right side is dripping in shiny bits.
I really liked my Scout. We'll bilt bikes.
Just found your channel and watching this market update. I have apparently been wearing a prophylactic.😂. However, I’m not in the market for a new bike, but I have perused the inventory at my local KTM dealer. I couldn’t help laugh when I saw the price tags of $10-$13,000 for a KTM dirtbike. I have a 2005 KTM exc 450 that runs like a champ, but is heavy as a hippo.
Thanks Bob! Your the only one who got that 😁. Hang on to that old KTM. That's from tbe days when KTM was on the ball. Aftermarket has your back too. Ride safe
@ I just moved to Arizona a year and a half ago. And I’m getting my camping gear, generator, RV, and my KTM in running order. My KTM is in the shop right now getting a tuneup and servicing to get it ready for the season. I Wanted to put it out there that if by chance you’re gonna go to any local or overnight dirt bike riding single track whatever description the kids are using these days to go riding I’d be interested in buddying up with you. I don’t have anyone in Arizona to ride with as I don’t know anyone either. I don’t like riding by myself, but will do it.. I saw your video on Boulder’s OHV. If you go out there again or any of the others that are “”local and I can tagalong please let me know. I’m in Glendale AZ.
This is for real. There are so many bikes not selling. Some are quite cheap.
2024..... a new 2024 Volkswagen Taos SE, an entry level small SUV. 1.5L, turbocharged, sunroof, AC, ACC, blind spot monitors 4 doors, 4 electric windows, nice infotainment center and instrument panel, 4 mags, 4 tires. List, 33K, bought new in March for $27.2k. A new 300 mile demo 2023 BMW R1250 RT, list $28.2K selling for $25.5k. Decisions, decisions. I bought the new VW Taos, a much much better value. I found a used 2022 BMW R1250 RT with 1970 miles on it for sale. Negotiated for $16400. Bought the used RT, too. Had to fly out to pick it up and ride it back home. Same with the VW, in OK City. I will hunt nationwide for deals now that I am retired. Too many really greedy dealerships out there.
VW makes a great vehicle. In 2018 I bought a VW Alltrack. Fit finish was awesome. The engineering was top notch. Parts and repairs were pricy though. $1200 for a brake caliper $2000 for a transmission service. I put 80k miles on it no issues.
@@azdesertdog The Alltrack is a Torsten AWD model. There's a lot of different boxes that need fluids changed out regularly on that model to keep it running right. The 2wd Taos I have only has a 8 speed Aisin auto transmission. Very easy to service and maintain. I see 40-44 mpg regularly on it on highway or freeway when the AC isn't running.
I will survive. I do not currently own a motorcycle. 😅
Hopefully that changes this year.
The problem is prices are sky high, and all the technology makes motorcycles less reliable and more vulnerable to breaking. Most motorcycle enthusiast prefer simple bikes without a whole bunch of rider aids and unnecessary, Let’s call them gadgets.
Not to mention that the streets are less safe than they used to be with people on their phones nonstop
Agreed 100%.
Thanks 😊
What kind of riding do you do, or are interested in ???
Many deals right now in the used market. People are hurting and there’s a glut of pre owned inventory at the moment
I don't know about anybody else but I didn't get enough money from the government to buy a motorcycle. And by the way, younger people aren't taking up the hobby, the older people are aging out. Motorcycling is a hobby for people with discretionary income
Number one, Honda! One reason is quality, the other is price. I just bought a new 2024 Honda Rebel 1100, I got out the door for under 11000 dollars.
Interesting thoughts, I'm always shagging deals and flipping bikes, and I think this is only the beginning with all the layoffs nationwide and prices going up on everyday necessities. I'm utilizing my bikes for errands and work a bit more than before and the pristine 3k mile Gen 1 KLR I was going to sell I'll hold onto because it's reliable old technology that will outlive the cockroaches.
THE MIGHTY VERBAL WIDGET !!!!!!
Your statement is very correct BTW !!!!! - You are a Genius !!!!
@ OBI-WAN my brother, always great to see you in the comments. You are the DR650 Master.
@ Dane!! lots of stores closing, job layoffs, 50k for cars, 400k for a shack? living in Bizarro land, tough times, Prez poopy pants did everything to weaken the USA, people just trying to survive, a bike is a luxury to many. Important to stay out of debt and hunker down through this. I'm preaching to the choir I know. Time for a wild horse cheeseburger.
@@pilotdane1 OBI-WAN The man the myth and legend, the honor is mine.
I just got a 1980's motorcycle. no one to work on it, I have to travel Miles and miles to change a Tire. Folks don't have to wonder why this is taking place.
I'm retired and 60. been riding since 16. I've bought 3 new bikes and 8 used bikes in that time. Had up to 4 at the same time. New is never happening again. I now have only 1 bike, a 92 Honda 750 Nighthawk. cost me $1900 over 2 years ago. Drivers in general are getting crazy out there. I try to stick to less populated areas and back roads to ride. Still have to get through some areas to get there though. I think motorcycling is dying out with us boomers, never to return to those levels. Here in central PA I've watched many dealers and private shops disappear in 10 years. Not much left out there. Good I can do ALL my own maint. and tire mounting myself on my antique bike without a scan tool.
More riders buying used. When a new 500cc is 10K plus, well something has got to give....
Problem with used is every seller thinks they have the diamond in the rough and price their bikes into the stratosphere...
I agree. I think around June this plays out for real.
Agreed but if you’re smart, there are some really good deals in the used market right now. I’ve been hawking Facebook marketplace for a few weeks and the inventory is swelling. I’ve noticed a lot of stuff sitting for months with price drops periodically.
I’m 70 yrs. old and still riding my 2010 Heritage and it’s paid for . Thinking about side car or trick kit .
Even used 2023 Honda scl500s
aren't discounted as much as you'd think, and unsold 2024s aren't at all.
Wow. Not sure where you are. I was actually looking at the SCLs I could only find one available in the Phoenix area. Oddly enough it was a 2023. Not many dealers are showing discounts, beyond factory, on anything. When you call and press them they want to deal. Especially at months end. Thanks for watching!
@azdesertdog
I'm in central Florida.
Seems like even the msrps are higher.
@@HAMILTONPROVIDEOl bet it has something to do with bike week coming up.
Thanks for the insight ADD. Looking at a low mileage 97 Honda VFR 750F for $3500.00. Or a 86 Kawasaki 1000R NINJA low mileage for 3750.00. Enjoyed the video and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
Those sound like a couple nice bikes. Private used bike sales are not taxed in AZ so used biked are the best value for me.
Look for proof the valves were checked/adjusted. I heard it is an expensive job for the VFR.
@@filippocorti6760I would check the valves myself. I have a 96 VFR750F.
@ Sounds good. I need to learn how to do that in the future.
Motorcyling took the hit in 2008 and hasnt recovered since, Covid made my 1984 bmw 325e worth stupid prices too, back to more normal now for that car...
I guess the folks in my area(Brevard fl) haven't gotten the message. Used bikes are sometimes priced the same or even higher than new. What's the deal with that?
The company that sells the most bikes and only bikes will be hurt the most.
Most of the time the dealers know less about the specs of the motorcycle than I do.😮 Some new motorcycles have filthy handprints all of the tanks .with scratches on them too. You would think when the salesman have nothing to do which is most of the time. They can take a Fiber cloth and clean the motorcycles. Hello
HD does have the market cornered for American cruiser/bagger/tourers but speaking of crashes in the 70's AMF had to keep the name alive, in the 80's Reagan put a huge tariff on any Japanese bike over 750cc to keep HD alive, in the last 2008 economic crash HD had to take a US Govt. bailout.. don't know if anyone or anything will save them a 4th time... I'm an Indian fan and just hoping Polaris can keep it alive... I have a 2018 Chieftain with 52K on it and runs like a top... I would like to trade it off and there are some damn good deals out there (2024 Challenger Limited for 23.5K at my dealer) but I just don't know man.. I love my bike but am thinking it might be time to trade up and ride the next one until it's dead
Cliff I remember the HD saga for sure. I will be putting out a video on my experience and how to buy a motorcycle in this market.
As long as the guys who have to have a new bike every two years, selling them with 3-5M miles on them, the manufacturers will survive. Once these guys leave the market, the HD's of the world can not survive on t-shirt sales alone. As someone who has lived through several of these cycles, I will do what I always do. Upgrade rides when the market is down. I am down to three rides now. The 21 year old HD still ... the local dealer sucks. I had to get the BBB involved. I rode it in there with an minor electrical issue that needed a computer hookup to confirm. Long story short, after them having it May through July I told them to just give it back .... that was the point they had to admit they lost track of the bike. I had to go into thier shop and identify it for them....unless it's an EVO or before I'd never buy one of them again. The 3 year old Vespa is a riot and still simple enough I can work on it. The 53 year old Triumph needs alot of tinkering, but simple tinkering. I believe overall economic conditions, percentage of disposable income plus what the overall place the motorcycle niches are that will determine who survives. One of my boys bought a new CF Moto. He loves it.... he had to take it back is after breaking it in and pay $75 to have features turned on in the computer that were already there. On the other hand anther son has my last Yamaha XS650 (1982 model). He left it sit for 5 years with a cover on it. A few years back he wanted to go on a weekend ride with me. On Thursday I went down, we put in a new battery, drained the tank, cleaned the carbs and it started on the third kick. Did a complete tune up/maintenance on it and hit the road Friday. With the bikes like the Yamaha SR400/small displacement/simple rides so popular in the Asia markets I guess younger riders will either in the camp of one of my boys or the other. How manufactures respond to those two groups of young riders will dictate who makes it. As for myself, at my age I will probably ride out the ones I've kept.
FYI - H-D in Pueblo CO. has a several 2024 bikes leftover and they are recalcitrant to sell . 🫤 I’ll continue to ride my 05 Road King 👑 👍🏻
That would be a keeper. 20 years and still running. Little to no electronics. Huge aftermarket. I think your better off.
@ Agreed 👍🏻 Purchased brand new . All modifications were made early on to make it bullet resistant . Gear drive conversion when new . Stage 3 upgrade . Oil cooler . 3 hole synthetic oil changes every 3K miles . Premium fuel 97 octane . Still own my first H-D 81 FXS shovelhead I bought when I was 21 yo . It looks as fresh as ever and I’m showing my age 🫣
I have however, also been kind of wanting to trade my old 04 Road King for something like a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 or 450, but In many ways, I just can't hardly stand to give up that big chunk of old American Iron for what I can sell it for, now days, when I know it is capable of out lasting me.
I like the idea of the 450 Enfield, but now they have tricked them out with too much modern electronics, which makes me nervous, the 411 not so much, except it's probably a little under powered for the pavement in my neck of the woods.
There way to expensive. For most people.
Some bikes are 35 to 40K. I didn't pay that much for my truck.
For 2025 HD jacked there prices out of sight the HD dealership in my area have new 2023 to 2025
I'm keeping mine. I'm going to ride the wheels off, and I'm not trading it. 2022 Harley Pan America.
Great bike and a solid plan. Thanks Brian.
Motorcycle dealers have been adding markup to motorcycles before Covid. I never buy from any shop that adds markup above MSRP.
My house trailer cost 10k.
I'm not going to pay that or more for a motorcycle.... which is basically what the poor drive.. it's why I drive one.
The reasonable range for any motorcycle, new or used, is under 2k.
Dealer freight and prep ruined motorcycle sales.
The bikes are overpriced .
Luxury items only .
No more motorcycling after 55 years. Too many drug crazed vehicle drivers out there on their phones checking FB and Instagram. Too many cars on the roads. Just trying to put food on the table. Wanna buy a Goldwing cheap?
It hasn't crashed nearly far enough.
For sure. I believe we will see the rock bottom this spring. A lot of new models hit the showrooms. If they collect dust we will see alot more of the KTM type effects.
Kids today are into guitar hero..not guitars...into electric bicycles..not a 700# motorcycle that needs a $500 oil change
Yes I'm 62 I still ride the timber in central Illinois the younger guys might do a few moto laps and in for 15 I'm still out for 35 in the timber then in so my wife says?
I guess I am out of touch with reality. I have been riding the same two old Harleys for over 20 something years. I still ride a 98 Wide Glide and an 04 Road King. I like them because they are still relatively simple compared to the offerings now days. I did however recently buy a new 2025 Yamaha TW200 because I wanted a small simple, light trail bike, so I paid the price for new. I did this because used ones are often almost as expensive as new. The owners of older Tdubs have not gotten the message, that we are in a crash.
Forged steel cranks on those HDs. Keep em. They are bullet proof and no tech. The TDub is ne cool design. I always shake my head at the resale on those. Hope your enjoying it.
I have a 2017 Honda Africa twin and was going to buy another Harley Fatboy that I sold and came back up for sale. I thought it be nice to have my old bike back, but the seller is an asshole and wants double what I sold it for. Decided instead to buy a 2025 Honda Dax that other family members can ride instead. I paid $175 under msrp with a little bargaining.
KTM and Indian have filed bankrupcy
KTM yes. Indian no.
I agree with your prediction for the most likely outcome for KTM. Another possibility is that the Austrian government cuts them a big cheque. I live in Canada where we have the big industrial firm Bombardier. Every few years they get into trouble and the provincial and federal governments bail them out often to the tune of billions. Austria doesn't have a car manufacturer so perhaps there is enough national pride for KTM to generate the political will required to bail them out. It makes no sense for the taxpayer to fund an NFL stadium for millionaire players and billionaire owners but it happens all the time because people love their sports teams.
I have gone to two year old bikes. Let someone else pay the dealer BS,
Then you looked at bad dealers. The BMW dealer in Tucson, Az. never marked up prices during the Covid craze. Not even on the M bikes with waiting list and they never add Prep, Assembly or Make Ready charges. Just Tax, doc fee and registration.
It was a phase and over priced at that. I’m seeing some nice bikes at great prices on facebook. Great deals coming soon.
We need a return to mom and pop shops. Big dealerships come with big fees.
ALL VEHICLES ARE OVERALL TOO EXPENSIVE. DEPRECIATION IS 50% IN 2 TO 3 YEARS ON ALL OF THIS. PEOPLE ARE REJECTING NEW. GOING FOR OLDER STUFF. ME INCLUDED.
I bought a used low mileage Yamaha Wr250r best $3000.00 I ever spent I’ve seen these bike with 70k on them and the motors were never apart made in Japan .
I remember when the WRR came out. All components were in house Yamaha. Amazing bike.
so much aftermarket stuff for them I did a new tail light blinker integration tidy it up great on off road bike
Since most major manufacturers are moving production to China and other Asian countries, I'd say the writing is on the wall and they are desperate.
Agreed. Unfortunately, I think that moving to Asian facilities will hasten their misfortunes. With poor quality and impending tariffs, it's not going to be pretty.
As others have stated the bike...touring line in particular have gotten super expensive. I currently have a 16 Wing which I love...but, I am considering trading for a smaller bike. The newer wings are too expensive. Even the bikes I am considering the Africa Twin or the new Kawi Versys 1100 are approaching 20K....yikes! With HD and Indian having $35K+ bikes...forget that. Just way to expensive. I simply wont spend 20K + for a bike that sits 4 months of the year due to winter.
The younger generation isnt into riding as much as my generation is so the big expensive bikes simply wont be big sellers IMO.
I'd be afraid to ride a 35K bike 😁
KTM files for bankruptcy, look at orange county choppers..its a relic..a dig site..a storage unit building
Look at the remains of orange county choppers...read the writing on the wall
If you’re Indian was not held up by Polaris I’m pretty sure they would go under. By the way it’s Polaris not an Indian the Indian brand died a long time ago there is no lineage the Polaris and the original brand Indian. It’s just a name they bought.
I pretty much said that in the video.
last year I made 5500 selling used bike. sold 6 motorcycle I don't go by KBB or any other, I go by year of the bike, mileage and condition. I just told the buyer if they can get something cheaper then what i offer then feel free to move on.
Well done sir👍
Prices going higher with next round of inflation ; don't kid yourself,. Brraapppp
Harley hater, I have dealt with my local and other Harley dealers and seen none of the issues you mentioned. The motor companies prices have been clearly listed on their website so there’s not much a dealership can hide.
No Harley gate here. I'm glad you have good dealers. That's not the majority of people's experiences across all brands.
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
🇺🇸⚖️👁️👁️⚖️🇺🇸 MAGA👍👍🏁🏁
buyers market no doubt..new and used..do your research..lots of brands having quality issues ..thanks AZ
For sure John. Spot on.
Thats what happens when you push DEI over job skills and merit... like KTM
