Samsung NX1 Firmware Hack - Bitrate test

- In this video, I finally take my Samsung NX1, and apply the firmware hack that's been on the internet for a couple of years now. This firmware hack for the NX1 has been known to have significant improvements for the NX1, such as an increased bit-rate, from 80mbps to 160mbps for UHD footage! After a number of years, I felt it was important to extend the life of the rare Samsung NX1 so that it could continue to be a reliable camera for me in 2018.

Also, regarding the hack, I didn't want to give instructions on how to access the hack, because that's not something I want to be responsible for, however, here's the link I used to install the software. You should be able to find everything you need like I did:

can you do a video on bitrate hack for NX1? I got the green dots to appear but I can't activate the screen for changing bitrate.
Hello Magnus, I have installed the hack on a NX500 and on a NX1. On the NX 500 I have no crop when filming, but on the NX1 I still have a crop... Is that normal???

There is no crop as far as I have seen. The only crop is when filming in dci 4k, vs uhd. Very slight though.
is it still 8 bit ? and do you see better dynamic range?
It's still 8 bit footage, and I haven't noticed any change at all on the dynamic range. All I cam confirm is that the image looks a lot cleaner with higher bit rates.
yes the dynamic range is really a pity, wish they made a new one with 13 stops of dynamic range @@magnus547
Hi Magnus, great video's you make. I have installed the mod hack on a Samsung nx1 just the way MARK10 showed on RUclips. But when I press the exposure button twice... nothing happens. I don't see the screen where I can make changes, or uninstall the hack. Do you know a solution for this issue?

Not sure which button your pressing. Do you mean the light bulb button on the top that turns on your settings panel light on the top of the camera? That's the one that activates the menu when in video mode on the camera. Let me know if that's what you're trying.

In the link you provided to eoshd Andrew Reid gave 5 steps to folow. If this is all I have to do I will try it myself having the NX1 since 2 years. If you answer "Jes, that´s basically it", I will give it a try and not blaming you if it does not work out. So, are the 5 steps all it takes? Thanks.

No. Unfortunately it does not.
Removing the 30 minute time limit alone would make it worth it to me. How long can you get out of 1 battery shooting 4k with the NX1? I'm just curious. I wonder if the GH5 has more dynamic range than the NX1? DR with M43 has never been a strong point.
jeffhalebopp You can get like an hour and a half of constant recording on one battery. Give or take. Regarding dynamic range, you get about 12 stops of dynamic range on the GH5, and only a bit over 10 on the nx1.
GH5 is garbage. sorry to tell but it is. Mobile phones focuses 10x faster then gh5.
Tomas, Mobils do focus faster for sure. They have much smaller sensors to they don't have to contend with a larger depth of field like the GH5 does. Now that is no excuse for the abysmally poor video auto focusing on the GH5 and all of their other cameras for sure. I have a GX85 and a G7 and from the 1st day I disabled auto focus on them. I just use touch to focus then is locked. You can get spectacular 4k video out of these cameras. But just don't attempt to turn on auto-focus. Panasonic must fix this in the future by adding phase detect otherwise run and gun is just useless.

i bet NX1 has at least 12 stops DR with the right settings...
...because you can built an extreme flat PP at the DR-PRO-Mode (especially with -15 at the black levels) which is even more flat than the one of the s-logs of Sony. ppl just dont know the menu details ;)
@@ludi4u , I’m sure there is a way to bypass the color profiles on the camera but I wonder when this camera started the “mods” if anyone actually understood the benefits of things like higher bit-depth and removing color profiles?

@@magnus547 thanks for the reply but i did find it by searching thru google. By the way, I found a used one thats almost a $1000. Is it worth it? It will come with 16-50mm power zoon instead of 16-50mm S lens.

Also have you ran into any issues when importing footage in Davinci Resolve? I notice the footage looks very different it has some issues with edge of objects having a color cast or color bleeding issue... plus sharpness is altered... would love to see if you could test this and see if same issue occurs. FYI: This doesn't appear in footage when playing it back on PC in windows media player but only when I import it into Davinci Resolve.
