Thank you so very much! This is wonderful! I am a retired art teacher, doing volunteer work, teaching WC at a local library. Your information will help, not only me, but my senior and disabled adults students. Sometimes we can not afford to frame our finished work.
This is excellent! I've always wanted to put watercolors on the same frames as my mixed media. Now I can. Thank you so much for sharing this Kelly. OOXXOO Linda
I REALLY like this idea!!!!! I'm in agreeance about the framing of watercolour paintings and have been trying to find ways to present them and I think this, along with some other things I've found, will help my work pop. Thanks for sharing!!!
I will give this a try Kelly, I have never liked frames in general, I use a plain black wooden frame when i have to for photos, and it makes me crazy when my watercolor paper wrinkles. Thanks so much for this great idea!
I love this, the stretched watercolor frame looks wonderful. I will have to give this a try. ♥ I don't recall seeing watercolor paper stretched on canvas frames before, really brilliantly done. I've stretched canvas before, but my staple gun is buried somewhere in my closet. Love this idea, I'll have to find it and give it a shot ;D
awesome idea ... I was looking for how to get oils to behave like watercolors and came across your video well I am glad I did since I have extra frames around what a great idea love it! thanks for your genius idea
Hey Kelly interesting video.. do you prime the canvas again once dried or paint directly over it. Also like doesn’t varnish spread the color or anything when sprayed.
I just really love the texture of the charcoal paper and I will be using charcoal is the primary medium. Thank you very much. Guess I will give it a try if it does not work I will look for toothy watercolor paper. God Bless.
Thanks....I heave been experimenting this learning frpm my art teacher, he paints landscapes and paints first before he wets the paper on the back and then staples it on . I heave also tried your method on small frames I make from Balsa wood. He uses Bees paste for protection rubs it on with his fingers and buffs after it dries
Good solution. I also like just gluing my paper to material, then hanging it for an install. Gives another aesthetic that isn’t “under glass “ (which definitely sucks, as you say
I tried this but I stopped when I tore a hole through one of my paintings. A safer idea is bonding the paper to fabric first, doesn't have to be expensive cotton duck just some neutral canvas also forms more of a protective layer.
Thanks, what a neat idea. I have a question, do you recommend any products to coat a water color painting with to keep it from bleeding heaven forbid it ever got a water on it. I taught my dog to paint, and we donate his paintings to charity. I would love to do something to make them a little more durable. Thank you. heheheheh, never mind, thanks for mentioning it at the end of the video. What brand is it though?
thanks a lot for the video! any ideas why on about 50% of my efforts using this method the paper is too loose in one corner? I try wetting it again and again afterwards, but it never works, and I end up having to restart and wasting a piece of paper and lots of times stapling and taking out staples
It depends on how bad the buckling is, but you can gently wet the area and around it, and use a hairdryer to dry from the edges to the middle. If that doesn't work, you may need to restretch the paper, which isn't that big of a deal - just remove the staples and gently remove the paper and start over. Hope that helps!
I just started using watercolor ground on canvas (your video was in tje suggestions in my vid). This is another great idea! I will definately try it! Thanks
LINDA BLOOM Intuitive & Inspired Art I haven't tried it yet...but my guess is that the ground is more mixed media, less illustration...hmmm Do you make consistent vids?
LINDA BLOOM Intuitive & Inspired Art great! Let me know when you do ;) Making regular videos has been so fun and it encourages me to create art on days when I don't want to lol
Ah... gotcha. Well we made a spoof video, testing our setup. Then we made a serious video that is full of flubs. Now we are working on a good one. I'm sure that you will like it. I will keep you posted. Slow learning curve here, plus we are redoing my studio, and have new equipment. But it WILL happen. : )
I don't think this method would work for charcoal paper since you need to be able to wet the paper in order to stretch it, and from what I remember about charcoal paper, it doesn't have the strength that watercolor paper has. You're best off taping down the charcoal paper and trying that first. What is it about charcoal paper you want to use instead of watercolor paper for a watercolor underpainting?
btw don't worry about closed minded people since someone else will put a Patton on it and run with it in the future then say oh it is acceptable lol but I will know where it started just saying ... love people who can think outside the box you got my support!
Happy to see it done - looks easy - I will try it. Finally a way to show our creations without glass. Thank you.

What a great way to display and stretch watercolour paintings. Thank you for this very detailed and informative video.
This is exactly the kind of idea I was looking for ! Kelly your brilliant!

Ok I did my first one this morning and it worked great. I have two more drying thanks for the video
Great video Kelly!! I stumbled across this and realized it was you!

The brand is "Golden" and it's called acrylic archival varnish.

This is awesome! Finally a good way to frame my paintings that wont break the bank :D

thank you very much... you enlighted me with this tips.
and you make beautiful art.
I just decided what I'm using for my final pieces this year.
Thank you so much
I love this method. wondering if it would be possible to apply a wax medium instead of a spray varnish??? what do you think?
Thank you so much! I’d heard of doing this, but seeing really helps!❤
Ah cool. I always like seeing the behind the scenes / in progress stuff. :)
Can hardly hear the video. Make sure the volumn is turned up when recording please. Thanjs.
Beautiful idea!👍❤🙂 thank you for sharing!

It depends on which surface texture you choose. I prefer matte, but it's also available in gloss and satin I think.
Great video. Thanks for the tips
What was the name of the spray you recommended.? Thanks for doing this it was very informative!

and there you go ... bravo for your latest video ...
Does the spray leave any sort of matte or gloss finish? Or is it even visible(once it dries)? Thx :)
Wonderful! I think this is so true, when you said paintings behind a glass feels kinda lonely.
I just started using watercolor ground on canvas (your video was in tje suggestions in my vid). This is another great idea! I will definately try it! Thanks
+Felicia Follum Which idea works best for you? I've seen that watercolor ground, and I've always wondered. This idea looks really good. Linda

We hope to be doing so. Right now we are just setting up. Linda

fabulous idea love it!
Thanks for sharing, this will definitely come in handy!! Cheers!

Brilliant!! Thanks for sharing this.
Thinking about doing this but want to glue the watercolour paper to a tough backing like leather..hard to find cheap leather sheets though
Also can you put the paper over store bought canvas frames with the canvas still on it?
Can you draw on the paper first with pencil before soaking it?
This was great, thanks! Love Toulouse too x3
hi Kelly, i was wondering with this method, how would you send the painting via post whilst avoiding tearing?
Nicely done. Thanks.
Can I stretch charcoal paper and then use water color as an underpainting on it without it buckling?
Great video
I use Arches hot press watercolor paper, 140lb. :)
btw don't worry about closed minded people since someone else will put a Patton on it and run with it in the future then say oh it is acceptable lol but I will know where it started just saying ... love people who can think outside the box you got my support!
What's a Patton?
What do you do if it buckles on a big piece?
How far apart to the staples have to be
Very useful...thanks.
What is the brand of the finish you use? I can't see it clearly on my screen.
so cute,,,please excuse my stating so....but yeah...are you in seattle?
+lallope I'm in Nashville.
Very helpful.
how much you spend paper and frame
Thx! Great idea!
I would use some GAC rather than gell
I just buy regular deep canvases and cover them with the paper using this method.
Gisèle did you take of the canvas 1st?
Thank you!Amazing tip and u give me some idea for mine art:)
que brands the paper you used
What is the 'brand'?
I'm using only gesso now. :)
It's Golden. :)
Why not mount it on wood to stop paper tearing?
+B Pious That's my new method. Tutorial here: www.kellymckernan.com/2015/02/16/mounting-watercolor-paper-to-a-panel/
+Kelly McKernan Thanks Kelly, just one issue: What if the painting is already done...is this method ok?
Louder please.
Go to Woodprix webpage if you'd like to know how to build it. Good solutions for everyone I think
I doubt this method would be accepted into a juried show. Just saying.
Well shit, Marla. I don't think it would
why not?
