I tried taping my paper down, but when I paint the middle, it buckles into a hill :(
And now I have a literal hill in the middle of my paper 😂
SAME :+((
When it dries it will stop bockle...
Use a spiral bound pad with two clips at the bottom. When the paper expands just take off the clips, let the paper expand and then reapply the clips. I've used Saunders and Waterford blocks and they just buckle - it was so frustrating and also a waste of good money. Spiral bound pads are better than just pads.
tf😂😂😂 first i was like "oh thanks a new idea!" and now idk anymore😂
It happens , just do one layer and then wait for it to dry completely. Then add next layer.
I started out watercolor-ing with thick copy paper (not watercolor paper) and a cheap crayola palette. Once I started to get more skilled I gradually upgraded my paper and paints and it makes me appreciate having nice supplies sooooo much more

can you do a recommendation of gouache paints?
I've only used gouache by Winsor & Newton and Schmincke and I like them both :)
could you do a review about the miya himi gouache paint ?
If you like gouache, Holbein (I prefer artist’s/designer gouache over acrylic gouache but they make both) is the best. They make a pack of mixing primaries (cmyk + white) with a good mixing guide on the package.

Thanks Mako! 😁🎨🖌
This video is awesome! And super helpful!
I use heavy cotton paper, and found it still warped, but honestly I just use the washi tape trick. It works well enough for me. I mainly buy high quality painter's tape from the hardware store. If you're scared about spraying water on the back messing up the painting, there's plenty of spray fixatives and sealants. I've even used Citadel varnish (yes, intended for miniatures) to seal watercolour paintings. Micador Workable Fixative is a lot cheaper and works just as well.
My problem with tape is that when it's too sticky, it damages the paper when I rip it off, but if it's not sticky enough, it sticks off the board as the paper starts to wave...
@@shizotypical put hot hairdryer on the tape and heat it, then unstick it. it won't damage your paper anymore ^^
@@mervet.6672I didn't know that, thanks so much!
I was just watching your last video when you uploaded this!!

Awww
This video is so helpful! I was wondering why my paper buckles all the time even though its 300 gms watercolor paper. I noticed now that the label did not specify what it is made out of ... and when I bought it I was just focused on the weight and it says watercolor paper, and it is a small sketchbook that I can carry with me everywhere. I also noticed that when I do wet on wet technique sometimes I feel like some of the paper material sort of "disintegrate " (?maybe) and there are these tiny clumps as I'm painting... does this mean I put too much water? Thank you so much for your quick tutorials I really love it as I'm just starting to get into watercolor painting this year!!
No worries, I had no idea about that either when I just started out! Usually when it's high quality cotton paper they always say it's cotton. If they don't say anything, it's probably just regular wood pulp paper. I think the tiny clumps shouldn't happen but I think it's more due to overworking the paper. Cellulose paper for example is more fragile so you can easily overwork it if you go over with the brush too often or too firmly. Cotton paper on the other hand is more durable!
So helpful!!! Thank you!!
Your videos are so nicely done and educational :) Love it!
I once taped down my paper with this special watercolor tape that gets sticky when it becomes wet - it worked really well, but you're right, it's just so much work :'D
Aww thank you so much! IKR! Back then I saw artists stretch their paper and I though... "well this is what you're supposed to do" but it was so much work and sometimes it didn't even work so I was like "ok this is not for me" 😂😂😂
@@Makoccino Haha, exactly! :D Now I also tape it down with masking tape or if it's not too bad I'm like 'Yeah, well, whatever' and just fix it when I'm done painting xD

Hi, i really love your videos and the way you explain with demonstrations.
I'm really interested in watercolour painting however i am not sure about when to use wet on dry and wet on wet technique. Could you do a video on this? Like when to use wet on wet and when to use dry on wet, as well as the effects that different techniques can achieve. E.g. the difference between using wet on dry vs wet on wet to paint sky and clouds, oceans and other backgrounds.
Thank you.

Great video. Is it possible to do a video with some advice on how to paint with cheap paper and paint? I have just started this hobby and can't justify getting the expensive paper or paint set yet but would still like to try painting
Fine video! Love to watch your videos!
But I always tape down my loose paper and it still wrinkles..
Wait, so can you do the tape method when the paper's dry or no? Lol Has every watercolor video I've seen had an extra step that I wasn't aware of?
There are 2 methods one is with dry paper and the one is with water! When you use water first and tape it down you stretch it and make it stay flat. Here you usually use tape especially made for that. Or you use dry paper and just use tape to fix it to the board or table to reduce warping. I use the tape method without the water :)
@@Makoccino ok that's what I thought originally but I wasn't sure lol. Thanks for answering! 😊
YOU SAVED MY LIFE !!!
She saved your life with a watercolor video?????
Got my first #makofication! Thanks for getting my feet wet. Pun totally intended. 😁 #makoficationsquad
I personally stretch the paper (cotton and wood) after painting (it's a Chinese technique but I like doing it with Western watercolour as well). I wet the back of the painting with a thin wheat glue and attach it to bigger piece of paper which I glue to a wooden board. When it's dry I cut the borders of the backing paper and get a straight painting. The painting also gets thicker which means it'll be stronger than just a single sheet.
really helpful! now I need to check what kind of paper I have!! just only look on the shop that it is 300 gr 😬

A video I saw on painting a sunset or something anyway. She said that the reason why the paper rolls up is because the paper Soaks up the paint while drying. And she said to avoid that problem I’d to dry your painting after you paint it before you add other colors to it if it requires your paint to be dryed. She would use a hairdryer to dry her paint on the paper after she got the background the way she wanted it to be. And after each color depending on if you want the paint to be fully dried or not. And after you get done painting to dry it with a hairdryer to dry it so the paper won’t soak up the paint and the water in the paint if it’s water color or not. I never would have thought of that lol. Good tip.
Thank you, I'm a new sub in Australia. I am using Arches 185gsm pure cotton paper but I'm wondering if I can use this to paint watercolour galaxies, which take more than one layer of paint which is very wet. Also, so does spraying the back of paper and drying under heavy flat object or just using washi tape actually replace the need for stretching? (From this video it seems like it does)
Hi Ababy - I use Arches 300gsm and find that even with tape I sometimes have to also spray the back of my work and put in a book with weights to get it to be entirely flat, I (but I do add a lot of water to the surface) hope this helps
@makoccino hiii question: can i iron the paper after i had already painted on it?? Im a beginner and i didnt know that paper buckles up like this. I painted and really like my painting actually lol i would like to fix the paper without damaging the painting. Please advise if the iron trick is safe in this case?
Yes, you can spray some water on the back and iron it lightly on the back! I would start with lower settings just in case
I think I will start cutting up my unused cotton sheets n paint on those; that otta work eh!!
I can only afford cellulose ones, and they are so bad. One day I'll be able to buy 100% cotton!
In Indonesia, there is cheap cotton paper by brand Arto. It's only like 5$ for 10 sheets. It works well with wet on wet if you use the more textured side!
@@zaviherawan thank you for the tip! Unfortunately I'm in another part of the world. :)
Which brand do you use? I’ve been working with Canson and their 300gr cellulose paper is fine :)
@@MsJoeyJody it's a 300gr canson but it has nothing to do with THE regular 300gr canson, which is 4 times more expensive than the version I'm using. It feels like a fake version, but it's made for Brazil, I never saw this one being sold elsewhere.
Try the bee paper one! It’s quite cheap :)
is it possible to do the iron thing after, cause i was too late to find this video and my paper is already wavy

Thank you. I was super worried your answer was going to be only use cotton paper.
Amazing Video 💜 You
Thank you!!
Nice 👍 tip😺😺😺😺😺
UwU #makoficationsquad i really need this thank you mako😍😍🙃😄
I've used both cotton paper and cellulose paper. For me, they both have a tendency to buckle if they are 140 lb or less. But, I have noticed that the buckling gets less noticeable as the paper dries. I have not tried ironing paper, though. Do you use a steam or dry iron? One time, I was using a block of Arches140 lb watercolor paper and the paper got so wet from all the layering that I had done, that it pulled away from the edges where the glue was supposed to keep it in place.
Oh that strange that the glue detached, this never happened to me! And yes once the paper dries the paper gets less wavy but it depends on the paper, how it's glued together, if you used tape and things like that. And I use dry iron but I haven't had a problem with wavy paintings in a while because I switched to higher quality paper and it's a game changer!
I like all your videos❤ but I have a problem with water color sometimes I use the same sheet but In some areas watercolor dry very very fast I don't know what to do 😢😢
On the last month , I making artwork in watercolors for the first time , but when I applied watercolors , the paper is really warping and buckling , maybe I make mistake using way too much water so is really hard to control the amount of water and colors 😅

@@Makoccino Oh my god ... I need it so much to improve my artwork especially for Watercolors paint
I love your channel ... 💖💖💖
So is it better to use 100% cotton with gouache or the regular 140 lb watercolor paper (canson watercolor paper)?
I think with gouache you don't have to be that picky and can use regular paper as well. But if you use lots of water with it, I would always go for thicker paper. If you notice that you're not happy with the results, you can also try it on a cotton paper and see if you notice a difference! I would always experiment to find out what works best for you :)
I bought some cotton watercolor paper and it's nice. But it buckles as much as my Canson XL paper even taped down! I tried stretching the paper but it's no use. I finally found a way to get zero buckling and warping while painting, it's very simple and needs no special equipment. I wet the paper on both sides with a flat brush gently, then I take a soaked paper towel and smooth it out on my waterproof surface. I then place my damp sheet of paper on top of my cloth and it "sticks" to it (I use my clean hands to press it down). I usually dry the paper side I want to use first then wet it again, because the paint might seep underneath and stain the other side. I have used so much water and it doesn't buckle at all, the only disadvantage is that you won't have crisp clean white borders like you get with masking tape.
I might try this thanks
#makoficationsquad love u mako this problem happens to me all the time
my problem is sweat. not paint. does this solution also solve mine???
