I have too much struggle on painting small details
I can’t stress watercolor quality enough. There’s such a difference between $1 and $10 paints.
I often get the question of how mine are smooth... it’s simple. Quality!
Yes! Some people get mad whenever I mention it's important to invest even just a little bit more into watercolors because it makes such a huge difference! You can create good art with cheap sets for sure, but for this to happen you already have to know how to use them properly. As a beginner you would just get frustrated and give up!
makoccino I feel the EXACT SAME! I’m not hating, but the harsh reality is you get what you pay for... but it upsets people every time I say it. I just hate the thought of someone thinking watercolor is difficult to work with and giving up because of a cheap set. :(

Kasey Golden quick question so I got 12 watercolor tubes for around $10ish is that good or bad should I go for a more expensive watercolors or no?
YES! omg. I can't stress this enough. I'm usually the type of person that goes for cheaper stuff in the begining (to test out the medium) and the way good quality watercolours work is such a different one compared to bad quality ones, that once I got some better colours it was as if I started in a completely new medium!

Avidha Bansal You can still learn quite a bit from those tutorials as well. Even beginners. The difference is those same techniques are being practiced and applied to a bigger picture, rather than small samples.

@@liamina3563 I don't think so. Because the person who's making the artwork might know all the tricks/ways how to draw professionally. But the viewer doesn't. By just watching someone drawing a masterpiece, you can't just draw a masterpiece. So people who make videos for beginners should actually make it suitable for beginners

I was so lucky with my Windsor and Newton water colour set. I found the 36 pan set in a charity shop for £5 with only 1 colour having been used 😍 don't know who give it away but I'm thankful they did

I use Sakura's watercolours for my paintings
I use both a cheap hobby craft palette (£7) and a slightly more expensive “Major Brushes” set (maybe £15) and they give relatively good results. As I’m only doing GCSE grade artwork (and I mainly prefer some good ol acrylic or biro/fineliner ink) I find that they work just fine, as I use them for background/washes for analysises or title pages

What you draw is what you feel inside, learning art is making your expressions in form of drawings. Improving art means expressing your feelings in form of art and you choose yourself how you wanna express it better. There are no mistakes, there is just room for improvement in expressing your feelings.
I try to think of every blank canvas or piece of paper as a place to play and experiment, not the place a potential masterpiece needs to go. The experiment didn't go as you might have hoped? That's okay, you were just trying something out and learning from it for the next experiment. Making a mess and disliking certain results is just part of the creative learning process for everyone.
Bob Ross always said, "There's no mistakes just happy accidents..."

I needed to take notes and I want to share them with you:
0:43 make sure you're using the right paper, mainly because normal paper doesn't work well with water colors
2:08 make sure to choose good quality colors, as cheap ones are gonna look less pigmented and make blending harder
3:54 be careful not to use too much or too little water. Personal suggestion: use the back of a painting you don't like to try and recreate the effect you're searching for
5:22 color bleeding
6:06 how to avoid weird staining and obtain a smooth gradient: apply a thin coat of water first, then apply paint in one go (premix it before if you find it easier) from top to bottom; in you want to intensify the color or add another one, wait for the first layer to fully dry or else you'll get staining.
7:49 muddy colors are explained in another video in which she explains how to mix colors properly, that video is gold

Sometimes you don't have to know what to do. Just have fun. Water color is really fun and pretty things can happen just by playing with it.
I think it was Van Gogh who said it, if they say you can't paint, then paint and you've proven them wrong. So... anyone can paint as long as you start painting. :)

#makoficationsquad Due to the limitations of cheap art supplies, I'd love to see a video demonstrating the best way to use them rather than just throwing them out.
Maybe use them for crafts, or with limited palettes, no blending, repurposing them, or just making them into decorations.

Dude, where i live its like RM100+ (malaysian currency). So i buy tubes (since it cheaper than pans) and if i really need to use pans like maybe for traveling, i just make my own.
There's a difference between Windsor and Newton Cotman, which is their student grade line (still very good) and Windsor and Newton professional grade watercolors, which are more $. I suspect the $10 set in the video was Windsor and Newton Cotman.

I live in Bangladesh, and there's a 34 color shade watercolor set selling for BDT 485 which equals to somewhere around 6 dollars. Honestly I don't how it's not on sale but still that cheap, plus the quality is very decent.

I received some of the cheap art supplies as gifts so feel somewhat obligated to use them. On the other hand, I'm afraid to use the more expensive supplies because I feel the pressure to make it come out perfectly! LOL

@@shitalkanitkar5995 My aunt used to practice all the time before she painted the real thing to see the composition, colors, and brush strokes that she wanted to use. The good paper and watercolor paint do behave different differently. Much of her work was acrylic and canvas which can be expensive also.

How can I know if the watercolor is FAKE??
They are usually super chalky! Too bad they are all called watercolors, but there is such a huge difference between the proper watercolor paints and the "fake" ones :(

You should review the Pretty Excellent watercolor pan set by Lightwish Meiliang. A lot of people think it’s associated with Paul Rubens because of all the similarity, yet somehow the paint is COMPLETELY on the opposite side of the spectrum. I actually own the set after doing a lot of research on whether to buy it or not. Out of experience, I can say YES! 10/10! On Amazon I got it for around $25.00. It has a GREAT price for the quality in my opinion, although lots of other people say it doesn’t at all.
You don’t have to do it of course, but I’d love to see a review :)

I would have one more question, I am a total beginner and I strugle with the actual mixing technique of colors. When I mix a color in water, it is always pretty transparent on paper..I tried to use less water, but then it's pretty difficult to get a good dip of paint. (I use schminke paints in pans) so a video where you show the actuall process od mixing would be great, in all videos artists take either the color directly from the pan or have their colors already mixed..thank you :)
What is the best paper for calligraphy? I'm still practicing my skills, and my biggest problem is that. The ink run in a regular paper.

This reminds me of when I was using watercolor and forgot to let an area around a golden fish I was painting dry, so the fish's color seeped into the area around it, but actually made it look better because it looked like an aura around it

In art there are no misstakes - FALSE! They are happy little accidents :D
Makocinno, I recently thought of a weird hack or 'hack'. I cut out sponges of different sizes and used it for water color. The surface will be smooth and if you brush the sponge properly and nicely, the colour will be very beautiful. Also, to combine colours, I use one third of the sponge for each different colour and it works (for me). If i want to create gradations, i watercolour the sponge at the top and bottom and I leave a small gap in the middle and theres a slight blend in the middle which is kinda nice. I thought that the sponge will be a good material as it absorbs water or something.....and it looks suitable for water colour. Do tell me if this is a bad idea so that I know this is not good for some reasons, and let me know if this method is acceptable. ..♥♥♥♥ thank you for all your videos and hacks/tips. Can you review camel/camlin/faber castell water colours? I would really appreciate it. I have been wanting to try water colour but doubt the quality of the water colours.
As my opinion you once use camlin watercolor because some Artist compare both and camlin wins and it is less expensive instead of winsor newton

I started with water colors using the Van Gogh set of 12. Most reviews out there say they're extremely comparable to artist grade paints. They're really amazing and mostly single pigments. Since buying them, I've built my set up with a few more colors from Schminke, and to be honest, I can barely tell a difference. GO BUY VAN GOGH IF YOU WANT TO START PAINTING WITH WATER COLORS!!! You WILL NOT regret the purchase. It's really unbelievable the quality you get for your money.

found this video when trying to learn some watercolor techniques for my art class since we're doing surrealism art using watercolor for our next project ..
and it kinda sucks because the school just supplies us with the wrong type of paper and cheap paints :(

I am always puzzled as to why these demos do not talk about the paper enough. Are you using block or lose paper? I try stretching watercolour paper but it still buckles and upsets me. I hate the buckling. It spoils the images.
Do you tape the paper you use to a surface? That's what I do and it helps a lot. I do still get a bit of buckling but not that much and a lot of it tends to go down when I put the sheet I worked in back into the book it came in and place it underneath something that puts pressure on it and causes it to flatten somewhat

I watched just 2 of your videos but it's INCREDIBLE how much I just learned. Wow. Thank you for doing these comparisons, it's so much easier to see the difference when you can see how it looks like.
I should really buy proper watercolour paper. I’ve been using printing paper until now, and that’s the reasons I can never make my artwork look good. Like after just 1 layer, the paper crumples up, and the paint leaks through!

i have a test tomorrow and the papers my school is using are similar to drawing blocks which is almost like regular paper,and were not allowed to use papers at home or etc.And i chose to do the galaxy painting, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
You just have to do your best 🙈 with galaxies they are more forgiving because you can actually create cool textures with the unwanted backruns. I just hope the colors will still look vibrant!
