Hey, new subscriber here! I used to collect dvds back when they were the new thing in the late 90’s and I fell off a long time ago. I just recently started collecting again with a focus on 4k blu rays and it feels like old times. Been loving looking at what others are picking up too. So far for criterion, I picked up Mulholland Drive, Wall-E, and The Others. Otherwise I picked up a couple films from A24. I also love that these things are region free. I have already imported a couple movies from Second Sight and Leonine (It Follows and Beau is Afraid). This hobby is so addictive and fun!

All that Jazz is directed by Bob Fosse one of the greatest broadway choreographer/directors who ever lived he invented "the frug" a specific dance he directed Sweet Charity, Cabaret and Chicago, he had a sad death he had a heart attack outside the Willard hotel. To Die for is a black comedy, its not got anything too shocking in it but its really good fun, Nicole Kidman is superb in it,.

De Palma's Sisters is a lot of fun. I think he's made better films, but if you enjoy the look of independent American cinema of the early 70s and that kind of journalist-as-heroes stories that you also get from All The President's Men, then yes, definitely one to check out.

I was going to buy my fair share, but it’s only at Barnes and Noble. Apart from a lack of patience, I can’t see a reason for not waiting until November for Criterion to have the sale on their site when I can get 10% back in rewards.
To Die For is on my list. Haven’t seen it in a while, but it’s good and curious to see if you like it.
Blood Simple isn’t my favorite Coen’s film, but it’s good and I picked it up in the November sale.
    Happy viewing!

Great start for the July haul. Five great films. Seen them all except for the Tarr (waiting for mine to be delivered). Loved THE DEVIL & DANIEL WEBSTER (using the original Criterion title); Liked TO DIE FOR very much, this put Joaquin Phoenix on the map. Liked ROARING TWENTIES AND BLOOD SIMPLE a lot. I think Grace would enjoy both PEEPING TOM and SISTERS very much. I, too, was unaware of Criterion selling individual releases for BLUE, WHITE and RED. I'm picking up 20 new releases, the one I'm looking forward to that I haven't seen already is FAREWELL, MY CONCUBINE. Enjoy hunting in the rest of the July hauls.

Hi, DJ and Grace! I visited my local B&N Friday morning and left with the following titles: After Hours, Anatomy of a Fall, Mr. Klein, Peeping Tom and The Servant. The only two I hadn't yet seen were Mr. Klein and The Servant, but I did watch The Servant yesterday and enjoyed it. I also hope to pick up Mona Lisa and Floating Weeds in a few days. Re: your purchases, I think you'll love All That Money Can Buy. Edward Arnold is great as Daniel Webster. And by the way, William Dieterle is pronounced "Dee-ter-lee." Somebody else in the comments mentioned a few other James Cagney films you should check out, and I agree with all of his suggestions. My favorite Cagney film is a nostalgic little romantic 1941 comedy called "The Strawberry Blonde," which takes place at the turn of the 20th century. It's available on Warner Archive. Happy shopping!

I highly recommend Exotica and Secret Sunshine as Criterion picks for you! Exotica sounds right up your alley, such an incredible film and kinda fits right along side your fable theme.
Secret Sunshine was the first South Korean film in the Criterion collection and it comes from master filmmaker Lee Chang-Dong. While I think Burning is his absolute masterpiece (and my personal favorite film from the 21st century), Secret Sunshine has a lot of his trademark characteristics. It is a devastating film and if you are looking for an extraordinary lead actress performance it would be my pick in the CC.

Grace, add my voice to the outcry of “Sisters- YES.” It’s one of my favorite DePalma titles and has a dynamite ending. Also, I’ll be stunned if you don’t like “To Die For.” A great black comedy with one of the last produced screenplays of Buck (The Graduate) Henry. Very dark, very funny.
DJ, “All That Money Can Buy” is a terrific little American Folk Fable. Walter Huston is on fire and features a murder’s row of great character actors.
Finally I love “Blood Simple,” a nasty, mean little noir. Listen for a great audio cameo from Holly Hunter.

@@FilmsByColor great question- try the Bill Paxton film “Frailty” which also has Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe. Also “Dead Birds” with Henry Thomas and Michael Shannon. You could give “Mud” a try which, like “Frailty,” is more modern.
The others I would recommend you might already know:
      The Night of the Hunter
The Beguiled (the original 1971 version)
      Angel Heart
      Big Fish
I could also recommend “The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao” which is problematic unless you’re willing to accept that Tony Randall’s title character is putting on yellow face and a cartoonish “Asian accent” for a reason.
      Robert Egger’s “The Witch”
Shyamalan’s “The Village” is, in the end, a satire of the kind of colonial fable that “The Witch” is.
Those are just off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more.
      Hope that helps? 🤷‍♂️

I was very young when I first saw it, 35-40 years ago and it maintains a strange power over me. Simone Simon who was in Cat People brings an otherworldliness to proceedings that works well with some of the dream like scenes. Might make a good double with Dante’s Inferno from Terror Vision

The only Bela Tarr movie I have seen is the Tourin Horse (that I really hopes ends up in the collection sooner or later) that I catched in a theater way back! Have had my eyes on the Werckmeister Harmonies since its announcement but are working up courage and strenght to even begin with Satantango omg. But one day so. Great picks otherwise!

I’ve seen Sisters, and it’s probably Brian De Palma’s most disturbing film he’s ever made, even if it tends to fizzle out a bit by the film’s end. The word “insane” doesn’t even begin to describe what I watched. I enjoyed it as a whole, but I don’t see too much replay value from it in the future. I’d recommend streaming it first if you can.

there are great movies, then there's Altman's 3 WOMEN - a masterpiece and I'd call it a perfect film. I AM CUBA is a must! if you haven't seen James Cagney in Billy Wilder's ONE TWO THREE, it almost killed him, paced to the Hungarian Sabre Dance!
