I was at both of these contests. 15 years old in '85 -right age, right place, right time! Thanks so much for posting this footage for us (now) old dudes that came up in this era!
T.R. 34th avenue dackyard mini ramp with Chris.....Stork the handsome one Lane......legendary......stoked on your videos brother......always memory lane......wuttttt memory chris lane, on site verbal
SLS was on today, in no way does it get me hyped to skate like this does. Rocco's run had a lot of style. I think people forget what Rocco brought to skating pre World.
Completely agree, every one focus on his bussiness side but his skating and creativity is what I've always said was underrated and underappreciated!! .. he was the world champion freestyler with a street board way before anyone else!!
@@JonJordan-sg3nktruly a pioneer he was doing switch japans off launch ramps too around this time. gonz really doesnt get his flowers as a switch skater
My first skate contest had a pink Cadillac in it, along with very similar obstacles shown in this contest. The year was 1986 at Grape Day Park in Escondido, California. The contest was put on by a skate shop called Rock Socks. Gator was one of the judges, and I believe Natas was there too. I was 10 years old then. Two years later Rock Socks became my first sponsor, followed by Tracker, Vans and Kryptonics. I wish I still had video from that contest, I have plenty of photos at least.
Tony didn't have the power or the steez, but he was about as advanced as the emerging street pros and had way more going on than most vert dudes trying to skate street at the time.
people have to understand they were inventing the future with these massive heavy boards made for pools and transitions - - his Gonzales board Mark is using on this video has more in common with a Variflex 'boat' than the Vision model 2 years later which was smaller and had concave ect
Skaters were more athletic during this period.. very strong boys - ability to do all the street-plants is a lost form at this point. I hope it has a resurgence.
That's so rad!
The "good old time" ! I really enjoy watching this old footage …
I still get stoked watching this old stuff after all these years. What a time to be young and reckless in those days!
Things were being shaped an molded at every contest back then.so crazy to compare street skating now vs then.thanx for sharing 🤙
Great footage

Whoa...This is fantastic footage! Skate tapes from the era are one thing, but demo footage is like seeing a band live.
This is footage from the Sacto street contests. But agree that live footy from the mid 80s is pretty special.
1:59 gonz back 180 switch 50 is mind blowing 😮😮😮
That shit made me shed a tear..never knew he was doing those that early..I didn't think till at least a year or two later 💯🥇

Rest in Peace Matt Quimby Oldham (sp?). Made the A-frame and S curb. The contests happen. And this video happen.
That's a awesome time 🎉
Mark Gonzales was always a step ahead.
5:45 that was rad
Trick of the video_2:22...Mark Gonzales G.O.A.T.!
Watch Gonz go up the handrail in the 1987 Savannah Slamma footage.
@@P1Brand Watched it, 37yrs. ago! Thanks!

Never saw this one before. Makes me wonder why no one does those crazy street plants while flipping the board around anymore. Those look hard!
Gonz’s run in 85 was insane! Did he try a BS 180 nose grind on that curb?!?! Board slide up the launch ramp! Grind up the launch ramp! So good!
Yes his skating in that contest was Insane. I think he was just going back 180 to 50/50 on the curb and kinda went to to nose grind
Mark rode a BIG wheel base. It was 16.25. I think Christian's was 16(?). Christian was a rad street skater.
Best trick! 5:11
Who jumped out of the car and tried the miller-flip at the end?
That's a huge turn out! Just like those crazy derby contests of the era too. Tony, did you go to those?
No, I always seemed to be elsewhere
360 airs, hoho’s, and streetverts. 🤘
that deck Gonz is riding doesn't look very big compared to Hosoi's is that Mark's Vision deck ?
🔥🔥🔥
Rob Roskopp. Mongo bodybuilder.

even with the low res footage, we could see how flat the deck Gonz was riding yet he did ollies n stuff. A true street prodigy
Jeff Kendall gets overlooked too much imo.
The past is a foreign country.

9:38 haha
Needs more cowbell.
Damn Jim Thiebaud style was horrible.
Thiebaud's best trick was making friends with Tommy Guerrero.
