Are They Good Again? (The Revival of Georgia Tech Football)

  • Georgia Tech Football has not been good for a while, especially since Paul Johnson decided to retire and the program moved away from the triple option offense to more of a modern offense. They had some special seasons even making it to and winning the Orange Bowl in 2014 and a 9-4 record in 2016, but those were the last flashes of success the Yellow Jackets had and both came under Brown’s tenure. That was until this season when Brent Key found a way to lead Georgia Tech back to a bowl game. This is the story of the revival of Georgia Tech football.

    I am a UGA fan. I love Paul Johnson, but I think the tripple option set Tech back fifteen years. The assumption was Tech needed a gimmick offense to compete. This was a formula for episodic success with limited potential. Then, enter Collins. Well, he was correct in wanting to build the brand. His methods were crindge worthy. Brent Key is using old school toughness with no apologies for the academic challenges. Nothing builds a brand quicker than winning!

    GT will see a playoff under Key. What many don't know is that money is now flooding in to the NIL program. Any goal the NIL has asked to reach GT donors have almost doubled it every time. GT also now has a HUGE backing from the school president. This has not happened in over 20 years where academics were priorities 1, 2 and 3. Now it goes Academics 1, Football 2, Basketball 3, and all other issues after. There is talk of the president pushing harder than ever before for the GOR to allow GT to expand it's academic programs to allow more degrees. ONLY issue it the GOR is made up of uga alumni/fans and is lobbied against. Yes GT has been DENIED the right to expand its coursework to allow different degrees, in fear it will hurt the school up 85.
    They landed a top 35 class for the class of '24, and are in on SEVERAL top 100 players in the country next year. Jontae Gilbert and Joshua Petty being 2 that are main targets for GT. This does not include Antwan Hill who is visiting this week with his whole family to see if it's a solid fit (commitment could be coming). As long as GT wins 6+ regular season games next year, they will likely land a top 25 class. If they do what some suspect and win 8+ they likely land a top 15 class.
    GT is on the verge of being back. The 2024 season is going to be a pivot point for the program. It is the 6th hardest schedule in the country as of today. If they can muster up 8 wins and a bowl win you might see the sleeping giant wake up in a BIG way.

    I love Brent Key. However, Tech’s schedule this year is insanely difficult, beginning with Florida State, including ranked Norte Dame and NC State and Louisville, and ending with Georgia. Five ranked teams. They will be lucky to go 5-7. If they get some real breaks, maybe 6-6. If they are outstanding and get some breaks 7-5 at best. A second consecutive bowl year is not a given.

      And Miami and UNC are expected to be ranked at the start of the season so potentially 7 ranked teams. That’s second most ranked teams on a schedule this year tied with Arkansas, only behind Florida.

    No they’re not good again. They’re below average. They just had an average year. Key is a good coach I do believe. The players are playing 4 quarters and seem to want to play for him. He needs players. He’s getting the most out of the players he has. That’s a good thing. But, for him to be great he needs great players. I don’t believe that’ll ever happen. But you better be ready to play them under Key. He will have his scrappy team ready. But GT is still mediocre and I believe it will be under Key as well.

      We have a really talented team and we’ve got our best recruiting class in a long time coming in this year. I assume you’re making this comment as a dawg fan. Let me ask you this. Are talentless teams able to succeed in the run game against Georgia? Because that’s what Tech did. You go back and watch that game, Tech’s offensive line consistently created huge gaps in Georgia’s defense. People are going to eat their words when we win the ACC next year

      Crazy that he’s bringing in Tech’s highest rated recruiting class in a long time and bring back a majority of the starters. Almost like he’s bringing in good players. Only takes a couple years nowadays to develop great players. Mediocre will not be a word to describe the Jackets here soon.

    • @jmonopoly6822
      @jmonopoly6822 4 месяца назад

      lol at Bama using the same run plays as Tech. So now Saban is studying Key. Come on!!! UGA played 2 freshmen LB’s and yes they were the weakest up front than they have been in a long time. I guess that’s why UGA’s offense had almost 500 yards! I’m also guessing the 2 turnovers didn’t help Tech either? I’m also thinking the game was really never in question for UGA either. If you guys were looking for a moral victory you found one. I’m actually a Dawg fan. But actually root for tech and would love to see them good again. But I’m not delusional either. I was giving tech props but being realistic. CFB is about the NIL deal now. Tech will suck unless those rich alumni pony up some cash.
