I appreciate you bringing up how the threshold for disliking something has become much higher. It's a large part of why I don't really engage with fandoms the way I used to back in college or even high school. I've definitely been guilty of toxic positivity and treating certain criticisms of something I love as cardinal sins, but eventually I kinda realized that no one else's opinion of something will get to me unless I allow it to. Or their argument is persuasive enough to change my mind. Now I just get mildly annoyed when I see others doing what I used to do, but hope they'll eventually have a similar realization. Quite a few people have been openly critical and while some may not be as eloquent in their critiques, the counter to every critique, valid or not, is "let people enjoy things" and "here goes Sonic twitter once again" (which this one may have truth to it but is applied broadly with hardly any explanation), and I find that very odd personally. I love Sonic as a franchise and the reason I criticize this media isn't out of some "malice" that people attribute to everyone who criticizes the piece of media they personally enjoy. I critique the Knuckles show and other pieces of media from franchises I enjoy because I want to see it improve. If I didn't like it, I won't harp on that point, I'll make a point to say where it can get better and how to avoid my personal issues with it. This is an important discussion to have. It’s always been a struggle for me to maintain my composure when encountering hatred of something I love. It’s ironic that the more you love something the more it hurts when people criticize it. Being attached to things can be good, because it gives you a sense of identity, but it also ties your personal ego into way other people value that thing. So it’s honestly draining listening to criticism, since I’m not the type to just dismiss criticism as just someone else’s opinion. Instead I try to understand the criticism and address it, this takes a lot of effort and slowly builds up resentment for having to explain why I love something, only for it to be shot down by more reasons. It’s a bad cycle that I struggle to break, especially since I actively seek out opposing perspectives because I think it’s important.

Tbf the majority of people online now dont just be critical or not enjoy things but they will specifically follow something they say they dont like and continue to point out why its bad, why people that like it are bad etc. And will continue to hype up the failure of whatever they obsessively follow. One of the most funny examples is a lot of the One Piece community jumping Morj on twitter because he didn't like Wano. Even someone who is a MASSIVE FAN of something can be victm of this stupid mindset.

I don't think the "criticism" attitude is ever not beneficial for the discourse, and it's always important to talk about what something is doing wrong, specially if it's something you love (like MHA). I completely agree with the video. However, I'd argue there's a point in which, at a personal level, this attitude is harmful for the enjoyment of media. I hate a lot of what's going on in the MHA manga, but I make my best effort to try and enjoy, put myself in the mood, listen to the ost while reading and try not to be too nitpicky about things, because, in the end, if I haven't dropped this manga yet is because I want to see how it ends, and I don't want that experience to be miserable. If I'm literally counting the amount of dumb stuff, then it obviously gets hard. Something similar happened to me with KH3, it had a lot of things I didn't like. But focusing too much on them instead of all the good there was in the game soured the experience, which I made sure to remedy in my next playthrough, and, as if it was magic, the game ended up being much more enjoyable. Tldr: if it's actually your job or you wanna write about it in a blog or something, sure, go ahead, but I'd argue positivity has its place, when you want to make the experience enjoyable for yourself. Grift off their audience with clickbait and misinformation or buzzwords 2. Insult and belittle anyone who disagrees with them to the point people have entire podcasts dedicated to finding videos they don’t like and shit on them for 2 to 10 hours, mostly used to shit on women and creators of color. 3. Use their criticism to stalk and hunt any aspect of creators and writers in order to find or determine whether or not a show they dislike or hate will be improved 4. Try to get members of their audience into organizations or groups ala the grifter RUclipsr sphere, Qanon, or believing false narratives ala pizza gate 5; misinterpret is a harsh one but some critics either ignore or take things out of context to paint things in a negative light in order to make their talking points worse and if someone addresses it, people start shifting their arguments. 6: “critics” who’ve let toxicity amongst people who like and dislike a controversial series so much that incidents such as someone faking suicide was defended by “critics” who claimed it was an “understandable situation” while also spreading misinformation about a false situation because people liked something they’ve didn’t 7. Telling people that if they don’t hate something, they should unalive themselves. Too many bad experiences and witnessing this on RUclips, just makes me respect all the critics who don’t commit that type of behavior Like I occasionally critique stuff every now and then, but I always try to go out of my way to explain why something works or doesn’t work, and back up either my understanding or perspective with evidence or interpretation, and at the end of the day, like I know most of the things are fiction. In context of the anime community, there’s several instances where letting people just enjoy things is the way to go because generally speaking the negative opinions are based on what was popular. Needless to say, with personal experience in criticizing MHA specifically the amount of instances where ironically enough meaningless insults with no criticism were levied against me after giving neutral criticisms for the final act. I use to like Rwby. It has it own potential and vision. Rwby inspired so many people to creat fan works like fan project (Dust Queen), fan animation, hell we had an Ozscars awards. I know now that this show has many problems with devolping characters, plote holes. My favorite Rwby content creator is always going to be Critter, she criticisise this show because she wants to see this show to improve also because of her I level up my crittical thinking. Believe me or not I use to be a blind fan who has zero knowledge about criticism and use to think that they are 'haters'. It is very unfortunate how little one needs to state their negative opinion to get the bal rolling no matter how little they care for the certain franchise at all. This happened to me twice in a very short time, it was at my high school where some people were talking about this really popular youtuber at the time but since I just watch smart people making video essays I haven't heard of this person before I asked them whom they were talking about and for the next couple of months that group called me by a new name - Kill yourself for MONTHS because I haven't heard of popular thing note this was a fairly small school and they were also in my class so for 5 days a week every week people were telling me off myself more people joined in when I didn't like a popular book series. As such I learnt two people with negative opinions do one of two things become Assholes or lose their opinions entirely
This video is literally Hellva Boss and a little of Hazbian Hotel fandom as a whole. “We’re only on season two ep 9. And we have four more to go. Wait until the season is finish before critique it” Like no. In all of the episode we got they’re a lot of writing problem when it comes to the characters and story. Like I was there for Hellva boss on day one and is kinda fan of it. But I still understand it’s flaws. To which it has a lot.
Nowadays, the line between emotional and critical analysis of a piece of media has become blurred. You need to hate a piece of media to hate. You need to love it to praise it. This doesn't seem right. Critics must be able to be alienated from the emotional and fanatical aspects of a media, to analyze it and fans shouldn't put a certain level of threshold on what's the line between critiquing and hate, and shouldn’t feel any comment as an attack to their person.
It’s nice to see certain topics to be touched on as a subscriber, though I do believe that this video kind of falls short. At least, it does when you compare the explanation being given to that of the - no doubt, satirical - title placed. Of course, letting people enjoy things is a given for any fandom - after all, entertainment is the main intention of such media. At the same time, your arguments would be a lot stronger if you expanded more on critique versus criticism in fandom spaces rather than focusing heavily on the cancelling culture that “critique” affords you because of certain “critics.”
I've found myself annoyed sometimes with the MHA criticism that sometimes takes things in bad faith, but I loved your overall analysis of how criticism has been vilified in this video, great work!
I saw this in comments criticizing and frankly hating on the Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some people would say how they’re just hating to hate and have no original thoughts on it of their own. And people were saying I was too critical for not liking it.
Just based video, so many good points. In general, i criticize stuff i care about because , surprise, its what interests me and i think could be doing better or want it to be the best it could be , and there is so much that could be said here but in short so many shows set up promises of stories or ideas to be explored or even are developed and then go against those that its just hard to not criticize
I feel a lot of the disdain for criticism comes from how disingenuous and hyberbolic a lot of YT critics were over the years, where over-the-top shouting and hatred was favoured over earnest, level-headed criticism. It also didn't help how a lot of influencers word was taken for gospel and completely influencing fan opinions for better or for worse

I did watch Re:Zero, love the death scenes but I am not a big fan of Re:Zero but still willing to continue because I want to see how it plays out.
I think people should also understand the difference between liking a story and thinking it is a well written story. I really liked Godzilla×Kong. Is it well written? No. It is full of plot holes. But big monke and nuclear lizard fought lean big monke and ice lizard and that was dope. (Also there were really good scenes with Kong that conveyed his emotions and thought really well without words) I can dislike MHA anime simply because I don’t like the VNs of the main cast and thats and thats a valid reason. Like no. In all of the episode we got they’re a lot of writing problem when it comes to the characters and story. Like I was there for Hellva boss on day one and is kinda fan of it. But I still understand it’s flaws. To which it has a lot.
Nowadays, the line between emotional and critical analysis of a piece of media has become blurred. You need to hate a piece of media to hate. You need to love it to praise it. This doesn't seem right. Critics must be able to be alienated from the emotional and fanatical aspects of a media, to analyze it and fans shouldn't put a certain level of threshold on what's the line between critiquing and hate, and shouldn’t feel any comment as an attack to their person.
Pls give an impressions of GO GO Loser Ranger, it reminds me of S1 Rezero, I think it has lot of potential.

It’s nice to see certain topics to be touched on as a subscriber, though I do believe that this video kind of falls short. At least, it does when you compare the explanation being given to that of the - no doubt, satirical - title placed.
Of course, letting people enjoy things is a given for any fandom - after all, entertainment is the main intention of such media.
At the same time, your arguments would be a lot stronger if you expanded more on critique versus criticism in fandom spaces rather than focusing heavily on the cancelling culture that “critique” affords you because of certain “critics.”

I've found myself annoyed sometimes with the MHA criticism that sometimes takes things in bad faith, but I loved your overall analysis of how criticism has been vilified in this video, great work!
I saw this in comments criticizing and frankly hating on the Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some people would say how they’re just hating to hate and have no original thoughts on it of their own. And people were saying I was too critical for not liking it.

In general, i criticize stuff i care about because , surprise, its what interests me and i think could be doing better or want it to be the best it could be , and there is so much that could be said here but in short so many shows set up promises of stories or ideas to be explored or even are developed and then go against those that its just hard to not criticize

I feel a lot of the disdain for criticism comes from how disingenuous and hyberbolic a lot of YT critics were over the years, where over-the-top shouting and hatred was favoured over earnest, level-headed criticism. It also didn't help how a lot of influencers word was taken for gospel and completely influencing fan opinions for better or for worse

I really liked Godzilla×Kong. Is it well written? No. It is full of plot holes. But big monke and nuclear lizard fought lean big monke and ice lizard and that was dope. (Also there were really good scenes with Kong that conveyed his emotions and thought really well without words)
I can dislike MHA anime simply because I don’t like the VNs of the main cast and thats and thats a valid reason. But that doesn’t mean I think it's a bad story.
