Russia brutalised this village. Now young Ukrainians are rebuilding homes and hope

  • Young Ukrainians from Kyiv are organising 'Repair Together' weekends to help poor villages devastated by Russian occupation by cleaning up and rebuilding homes for free.
Tetiana Burianova was traveling in Peru when war broke out, and rushed back to Ukraine to help out in any way she could. With her friends, she began collecting donations and organising repair events that now attract hundreds of young people from cities each weekend.
The Guardian's Christopher Cherry reports from a liberated village where he meets locals finding it impossible to forgive a brutal occupation, and volunteers determined to build a better Ukraine amid the ruin.

The Ukrainian people are amazing. Just when you think you've seen it all, the courage, the persistence, they again exceed your expectations. The young people are so mature and responsible to take on the rebuilding projects of the old folks that have been impacted. The soldiers defending the land are truly Heroes, but these young people rebuilding their communities are also heroes.

When will mankind ever learn to live, help, support and be kind to each other? It's not difficult to be kind. I am so so sorry for the people of Ukraine right now. If I was in the Russian military I would desert and join the Ukrainian defense or some organization that's helping to ease the suffering of the innocent.
