According to Keith's reactions he considered Bill Wyman's leaving as a disaster for the band. Very open and honest. Mick talks diplomaticly in a matter of fact way. But later Bill revealed Mick and Charlie had come to his home and almost begged him to stay...

Hello. Im not sure Keith Richards is genuine there. I read his autobiography and Bill hardly gets a mention. And when he is discussed, Keith is brutally dismissive. On the other hand, in Bill Wyman's "Stone Alone", Keith is warmly credited very early in the book. They started to fall out when Exile On Main Street took them to a sunny, Keith-led prison, where Bill and Mick T started to question where this was all heading. Bill felt increasingly under-valued; he isnt charismatic or extrovert, preferring his (imnense) bass skills to do his talking

Every great band's peak era has great regular bass players. The Beatles Paul McCartney, Cream's Jack Bruce, The Who's John Entwistle, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Van Halen's Michael Anthony.

With all of the out of control egos and Irving Azoff types taking advantage of that (while making millions) trading our Icons for his fabricated versions of legacy groups it’s good to know that someone had the inner strength to at least try to keep things going.
There are so many things the general public does not know about Keith Richards and his unmatched level of sincerity.

The thing with Bill is that he had to swallow many bitter chalices insuring his tenure with the Stones. I mean, in 31 years he sneaked in 1 song only, “In another land”, a fine work indeed, but he did so only because the album which contains it, “Their satanic majesties request”, was made under horrific circumstances, with Mick and Keith’s Redlands bust, then Brian’s own drug bust, and the Beatles having changed the landscape with “Sgt Pepper’s”, so the Stones where crying for new material. Plus, he had to suffer the ignominy of having Stones songs released where he wasn’t even playing bass himself. Keith would just record a cut with him playing bass and would say: “that’s it!”. And of course, how many years he had to go to band meetings and just shut up, knowing his opinion would be overruled? He looked like a peach job, but it was, in reality, full of affronts. He remains one of the finest bass players ever, one of the few who really traced the guidelines for modern bass playing, and he left when they started to turn into self-parody. Good on him!

In the real early days he would sing backup. I read somewhere that the last time he sang backup live was the 67 tour of Europe. I wonder why they stopped using him. I always wondered if Mick and Keith purposefully pushed him aside to give themselves more glory.
I believe there is a song on Metamorphosis that he wrote.

That “self-parody” went on to play even better without Bill. He could’ve been a part of that growth with that version of the band, but he chose not to. And that’s fine, he was five years older than Charlie. Plus, he had going that yucky relationship with Mandy Smith. He wanted to have more kids and not be preoccupied with such a big commitment like the Stones.
And let’s not pretend like Bill didn’t take a backseat to a superior rhythm player in Keith on those tracks.

    • @septimiusseverus343
      @septimiusseverus343 Год назад

Why do people keep bringing up the whole Mandy Smith thing when it comes to Bill's musicianship? IMO Keith's "living on the edge" lifestyle was far more dangerous an example to the kids than whatever shenanigans Bill got up to behind closed doors. It's not relevant to the music at all and none of our business really. Also, "better" is subjective. With Bill gone they rocked harder for sure, but to me the Stones weren't really a "rock" band. Sure their songs get you pumped, but they were all about the groove, the _feel._ Bill took that with him when he left. And honestly, listen to the Ya-Ya's rendition of Sympathy for the Devil, blows the studio version out of the water and leaves the Keith groupies crying on the scorched earth below lol. @@ArmandoMPR

I don't think Mick and Keith really gave Bill much recognition until the day he said he's gonna leave the band.
There are things you could do in your 20's or 30's which can't do in your 70's or 80's.
Bill just thought of doing something different in latter years, and not tour as much.
He could have still be in the band if the rest could tone down their act and still rock.
Do smaller stages, like Mark Knoffler is doing, and still enjoy performing to crowds.
Rolling Stones have nothing else to prove to the world that they are a great live concert band....but doing the same big shows as old men is a bit embarassing imho

You have to ask just why have all these great players, Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, and eventually Bill Wyman left this particular band? Only to be replaced by, let's face it, some very ordinary musicians. And why has this band basically never done anything of note since about 1972? It would seem the questions are connected when all the band's best musicians have gone.

In truth, you can't really tell much difference between Wyman's Bass playing and Daryl's because Daryl is a superior Bass player and he lays back a lot more on his playing to sound more like Wyman -- live or on record. Whenever you listen to him playing elsewhere, his Bass is far more filling than what we hear him do with the Stones. These cats are smart, they know what the fans like and they stay as true as they can for us…
