Tom doing his classic stages of grief with a book. I look forward to a month or two from now when he’s through anger and denial and onto acceptance/excitement
A lot of people commenting on tom's "saltiness " . honestly i love it. It's good to hear a different perspective even if it can be a negative one at times. Tom is a johny-spike on a panel of Timmys So he is going to see things from a different perspective and have a different idea of what's fun to him personally.
You can point out the flaws of something without being salty and hyper negative. I think that's the problem.
I'm like 20 minutes into the actual review part of the video and Tom is already giving off one of the strongest "Old WoW player" vibes I have ever seen. I'm talking about someone who has some incredibly salty opinions on things noticeably changing about something they haven't touched in years because they never actually liked that much (which they never faced).
I think even diehard fans are getting tired of GW's bullshit.
I think he had a rough week and poor KO suffered. ;)

Yeah - cautiously optimistic too :-) I hope the new hero's ability is an indicator on what the book brings. At the very least I would call it interesting.
Great Overview! As an aspiring Fleetmaster this was super helpful to hear different perspectives on the book and highlight some of the strengths to focus on - thanks for the content!

One thing that’s missing is an ability to give the skyfarers keyword to an allied unit+hero. In the lore, they’re taking passengers, would be fun to see that on the table. Maybe would be good on a named hero warscroll, eg Dagnai Holdenstock…
They could make it an ability that we can use with maybe just one or two allied unit of 40mm base size or smaller as part of the normal embarkment limits. Such units maybe shouldn't be able to jump out on the Frigate charge or use prudence chutes (they lack the training). Maybe as an amendment or article.
Yes, I wish at least Duardin Heroes without a mount could embark on transport vessels. That would make Barak-Thryng a lot more interesting for me.

Deep thoughts with Tom would be a perfect complimentary series to Warhammer Wednesday. Great talk gang, interesting insight to an army I know little about.
I knew it would be a good episode, but it turned out to be even better, really great discussions, with the the different viewpoints of the guests 🙏 My take is that I hated the old book, because to play against it, win or lose, was always a miserable experience for (at least) one of the players. Now I'm happy to give them anothet chance, and hopefully play some fun games 🙂

PS: I got 1 question: Is there a way to drybrush metallics? You say Vallejo Model Air is the best in terms of paint propertys but I figure it’s too thin for drybrushing, I guess Vallejo Model Color Metallics are thicker and maybe better suited? Sorry for all the questioning and my inconvenience.

The key is to just work it well off your bristles. It will still dry brush excellently
Good show! As someone who only considered KO as "that shooty army I would never ever play", this book has actually made them a fair bit more compelling. It was also very interesting to see you guys discussing Hero-heavy, since my gut instinct was "this army wants Battle Regiment really badly because it can't corner-deploy anymore". I do think you're right, though - it's the rare army that can actually use Sharpshooters effectively, and that plus the extra artefacts probably make going high-drop worth your while. That said, I was jarred to see how bummed Tom was about this army - I guess they took its Johnnny soul out? Or is that just a worry that it won't be good enough?
The salt is real and intense this week and Vince brought his fish n' chips.
Man Kharadron Overlords is my favorite army that I just don't think I'll ever play. I enjoy the melee trades too much and coming from playing 40K first, I don't think I want to play another 40K army just in a different system. Shame too since Steampunk Airship Dwarfs checks like every box I love. That being said, I'm glad that the rules got cleaned up and fly high isn't going to be everywhere.

Tuskhelm is based on the roll of the charge, not distance moved. The hero inherits a status of having charged, but that does not have a roll or move behind it, it’s only a keyword.
The helm is also by design commentary not stacking with other abilities.
There is this jealous little spot in my SCE / Orruk heart that sees all the amazing rules the newest books get and people still complaining has me almost going up walls.
Like you still want a *better* save on that Ironclad? come on! why not a 4+ ward as well...

Man AoS is in a weird place if we're getting books with rules saying "This army becomes 5th edition Necrons" printed in them.

I suppose a counterplay to Total Eclipse is Admirals Flagship, ex-grundstok, Leadership of the Alpha and Barak Nar. So you get extra command points and you get to issue commands without spending command points. Those things should still be handy vs any other army too.
P.s. can a unit embark and disembark in the same turn? So walk up, embark at the back wholly within 3”, then disembark wholly within 3” at the front?

I am not teaching at Warhammer Fest specifically. :) - It was teaching in the week before down in London. :) (Though that is moving as well).
I’ve been toying with the idea of a Zilfin 3 Frigates getting run and shoot and charge from brokk (he can apparently give 3 boats the rule) and then bring one ironclad to 3d6 charge! On average it’s something like 20 mortals from flying over and 22 on the charge, and then of course all the guns shooting from afar! (If the admiral can use Tuskhelm this turns insane!)
Really skew list and hard on the wallet but could be a really fun Timmy-run and gun and charge list!
This is the precise reason I just picked up a third frigate! 😁
Super pumped for the new KO book. Was running Zon KO back in AOS2 for a bit in an escalation league and the Dirigible Endrinmaster and Skywardens were so much fun. Pulled them out for a 2 dayer a few weeks back for lulz and had a blast.
I am a bit worried that both the skill floor and ceiling on the army has risen tho. Your lower players might find the army unplayable now its lost it's 'hit da bricks' Fly High that was extremely useful for getting out of bad situations. Good KO players were a nightmare to deal with already and this book has given them so many more tools that its kinda scary.
Be quiet or they will hit us with the nerf hammer lol. Seriously though - this is an army that attracts thinking players. It's not that the army itself is strong in my view it's that it attracts Johnny/Spike players who simply use the tools seeking to do so most efficiently.. Seraphon and Lumitheth need a nerf before us by a country mile. I actually think that GWs is trying to make everything in AoS have some kind of OP feel to contribute to the wild fantasy setting and I like it a lot.
I legit worry about GW ruining this again with an unjust nerf hammer if they decide to backtrack and bring us back to the dark days that were the first ed. KO battletome. For that to happen there has to be a lot of people complaining. There are people who hate shooting and seem to make it their mission to purge it from AoS - hopefully GW won't go back to listening to those people. They actually nerfed our shooting range in this book - but we got better melee options - that will be my response to those people when they complain now. Now they will likely complain about our melee being broken - in which case they are and obviously were previously, wine sipping, salad eating, leaf loving, tree hugging, elven dwarf hating racists who simply just want to dominate shooting while not allowing us to wear anything but costume armor on our bodies and boats with nothing more than a 4+ save. ROFL
@@toddashley407 I can see the Frigate getting a nerf fairly quickly, even if its just points. The rest will be fine for a while I think, the army is still very fragile and even Gigabrains mess up enough to drag them into the pack. The big thing will be the occasional time someone goes 5-0 with KO and will leave in their skywake a bunch of opponents who had no idea what hit them.
Maybe I'll actually be able to find a Warp Lightning Vortex now.
I didn't realize KO could be played pretty much all boats. I'm a 3d printer first, a painter second, and a wargamer third, so I'm not often tempted to buy any GW plastic. But I will say, I might be tempted into buying a bunch of big plastic boat sprues that would be unreasonably difficult to safely transport resin proxies of.

I was eating breadsticks while watching this…they turned into pretzels at the halfway mark. The salt was strong with Tom on this one 😅
Also will say having played against lady O….and having played a few games with new Barak Mhonar now, because the ability targets commands ISSUED within 12, often there is a hero outside the bubble to issue to the unit you want to shit off so it doesn’t matter. You have to almost sacrifice pieces to proc on any turn except the “all in” to get use out of the ability. (Ps I’m a huge fan of Drekki not a terrible person, is why I keep trying to make Mhonar work)

The way it's writen I read the fumigator on the thunderers would trigger only once per unit. But could trigger 4 times if you have 4 msu thunderers in an ironclad. Am I wrong?

If I didn't know I was going to go in hard on the Seraphon later this year I'd be very tempted by KO with this new book.
Question for you(and also Tom I suppose) how good of an ally is the Runemaster? Specifically in Barak Thryng. He is and allied Priest, and he generates you free CP, which this army runs on. Just a thought that happened to cross my mind.
That one is going to have to be Tom for sure, I will say I think it has some potential, but he is the authority.

Loved the chat guys, I've always liked the idea and look to KO but they just never seem to grasp it for me. But from an outsider perspective of someone who doesn't play them. It seems like a fun book to play with and against. :)

I hope you're wrong about the Hedonites book. I have gone in hard on buying up various units that I love the look at (I have the Sybarite Blade Carnival from Christmas 2021, two of the Sybarite Warcry boxes, a Keeper of Secrets, a Lord of Pain and Sigvald). If the book remains bad I'll still have fun painting them up, but I want these dudes to be good on the battlefield too.

So, I know you mentioned it but I can't find it anymore: What psychographic profile is this army for, again? I'm predominantly Timmy/Spike with a tiny sprinkling of Johnny, but I absolutely LOVE those steampunk Dwarves. Could this army still be for me?

I wish we could wave a magic wand and turn every instance of 4+ rally into a 5+ rally.
The army looks a lot more fun and flexible now.
Worst thing for me is that they kept that dumb restriction for Cities of Sigmar allies. After they removed similar restrictions from the other three Order armies that had them.
Sorry, but Tom is just salt in this review. In his mind he only plays LRL eclipse teclis with a 7 boat list ...
I'll point out that the Avatar of Khaine is a statue of solid iron and somehow has a 4+ save. So, I'll hold out hope for your Steam Tank, but...

Is it true that 'Venturella' means 'good fortune' in Italian? A guy whos spent half his life rolling dice! Love it. I looked into it because im calling a VTM character after you. Cant even think of a more perfect name for a Ventrue Methuselah. Your namesake is the act 2 end boss in case you were wondering. Dont worry, he will take heads before he goes down... Sweet show guys!

Barak-Mhornar is hereby known as Barak Mean. Also re Psych Profiles: I'm with Matt - wanting to stop opponents from having fun is pure Timmy. Maro has a blogatog on Griefers being a subset of Timmy / Tammy. GW was brilliant making the Griefer subfaction less efficient on math than Barak Nar, to keep the Spikes away from the Timmy subfaction.
Vince, you didn't answer the most important question. Did this make you wanna start your Votann/KO army for good? Cause I wanna see that!

Shouldn't "a unit cannot be affected by the same ability more than once simultaneously" just be a core rule at this point? Imagine how much ink we'd save by only having to specify the exceptions.

Was really looking forward to this review since these are always amazing and have the right in-depth (and unbiased) views on many aspects. However Tom's saltyness took away the fun of listening for me and I disagree with a lot of his points. The rest of the input was still very useful and look forward to the next episode
Even though Tom is pretty salty, I do agree with a few of his points.
GW really wants those Cockatrices out of the warehouse.
If you are referring to Black 3.0 it really isn't worth it in the hobby.
I tried it to black out diorama and bust stands but it is hell to work with. Has to be applied by airbrush in 5+ coats, and each coat they reccomend you let cure for at least 12 hours.
If you don't do this it just looks like chalky matte black.

@1:34:30 Nothing quite like someone angrily insisting a choice is for no one for an endless amount of time while someone else tries as hard as they can to get "It's for me" in edgewise. That dude clearly rolled a 5 and negated his cohost's attempts to share their opinion.

I respected Vince's opinion but when he seems to suggest reroll a 1, and hit on 2 the result will be anything be another 1 , I knew then he must be mad
I mean, I appreciate the takes this show gives, but I've never EVER heard someone as down as Tom.
I'm reminded of HeyWoah during the Ogor review when he said that this is the worst you'll ever feel about a new book, because you're comparing it to the of book

Tom was such a frustrating presence on this episode. He has plenty of valid criticism, but so much of it was wrapped in just whining about them fixing things about the army that were legitimately silly and broken. It is hard to feel like his criticism about other armies like LRL or Seraphon carry any weight when he complains like a child when his poor sky dwarves lost their crazy abilities.
So. . . With all of the heat that went around discussing Barak Mhornar, I'm afraid to ask this. But what separates Barak Mhornar from Lady Olynder, she has the *exact* same ability on her warscroll. Why is it so problematic for KO to have this, but Lady Olynder never even entered the conversation?
(Also, just an aside, but it's strange to me that Brokk doesn't have the Arkanaut Admiral keyword, because he should be able to use the Iron Sky Commands as the appointed "Faction Leader" Character)
Because Lady O is ONE model whereas this is the entire army. You don't find that troublesome?
You can kill or screen out Lady Olynder, and she costs 340 points.
The one model vs. army thing is good, but I don’t like it on her either. :)
@Vince Venturella That's a fair and valid point. I totally get that it's 1 model compared to a whole army. I wasjust surprised that it never entered the conversation since its the exact same rule.
Gotta be level with you folks, I had a hard time watching Scott's video and I didn't find it perfect to begin with, but heywoah's reaction actually did the opposite to me: I'm appreciating Miniac's points more now.
I mean, this whole thing really felt like hey repeating "accessibility for new players is a non-issue to me" in 7 different ways over one hour or so. The way he's missing the point about the complexity of list-building in a game like AoS is... dumbfounding, honestly, because one can tell he's a smart guy, so this must be a case of tunnel vision I guess.
Oh, and the Twitch chat had me physically recoil, like, twice. I know I'm not the target audience, but shiiit guys.

I don't often disagree with Vince, but you've got a game full of johnny armies. Seraphon, skaven, BOC, Lumineth, idoneth. KO guns are below average. Their big win was movement and hitching.

Good grief, Tom is a downer. People are excited about this new book. The overwhelming consensus is that it's vastly improved. People come here excited to hear about their new toy, and Tom Debbie-Downers it the entire time. Can we just enjoy our Pew Pew TotallyNot40K Flappy Dorfs?!
