Intel CPU too hot? Try this easy fix - More FPS, less heat
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 сен 2024
- It's possible that your Intel CPU is running too hot, especially if you have a high end CPU like an i7 or an i9. These CPUs often run really hot and in some instances may be thermal throttling because of it. The good news is it's possible to tweak the CPU voltage (otherwise known as under volting) via a free bit of software in Windows. You don't need to mess about with complicated BIOS settings to do this, so it's perfectly user friendly.
Here I'm showing you what to do and the steps you need to take to change the voltage and test to make sure the temps are dropping without impacting performance.
You'll need these tools:
Intel XTU (Extreme Tuning Utility)
www.intel.com/...
Cinebench 2024
www.maxon.net/...
HardwareMonitor (www.cpuid.com/...)
HWInfo64 (www.hwinfo.com...)
I'd recommend changing the Core Voltage Offset by small increments to start with. For example -0.05v and then testing before and after if you see a reduction in CPU temps alongside an improvement in Cinebench scores. I'd also testing your favourite games - especially if they're CPU bound like Rainbow Six Siege. Make sure they're still stable and watch for a performance increase too.
Increase the increments of voltage reduction and test to see if that makes more difference, but take care because if you take too much off it may result in system instability that causes crashes or blue screens.

The Intel 14900k has an AI tuning option in the Intel ETU. It's only available on the I9 14900's.
Out of curiosity what bios settings do you run? Do you just run F5 recommended settings with XMP enabled?
I use a Asus z790-a gaming wifi DDr5 board paired with the 13900k.
What drives me nuts if the performance can vary greatly.
With just a few changes like using optimized phase XMP I've been able to score as high as 24,000 on Time spy under the CPU and 31,450 on my GPU (7900 xtx).
I use 3 different benchmarks.
1. CBr23. Best score 40,090 worst score 36,000
2. 3d mark. CPU all core 17,400 to 16,700. Single core 1170 to 1270. Time spy cpu score anywhere from 24,000 to 21,850
3. Intel XTU. I can score anywhere from 13,100 to 14,000
I try and use the same settings when I update my bios but I'm seing big jumps in benchmark scores!
Idk why I'm losing so much performance! I've tried all kinds of different bios settings. I've tried using Intel ETU.
Idk what's up but with the newest Bios my System agent voltages jumped to 1.35. it was 1.25 for the first 3 bios when my scores were higher! Idk if the extra voltage is causing the ram to to be less effective.. idk what to do, but I do prefer to get the performance I paid for. Especially since I once had it perfectly scoring 13,900 to 14,000 on the Intel XTU benchmark and 23,800 to 24,000 Time spy CPU score. All while hitting 5.7+ ghz. Getting over 200fps on Asseto Corsa Competizione.
The one thing I will say is I regret buying the 7900 xtx Tiachi (white) I honestly feel my 3080ti worked better. I'm about to sell or trade it for 4070ti or super. Nvidia just seems to work better for my Sim titles
Tried XTU, getting an error about compatibility.
My problem is that I can't access undervolting in XTU because I don't know how to turn off undervolt protection in Gigabyte bios. Any ideas? Really would like to use XTU as I don't want to do permanent damage via the bios.
Running a brand new 14700k on a B760 gaming X ax
I fixed it buy turning that virtualization stuff off in BIOS. Could not find the option so I just used the provided bios search.
One thing you didn't deal with is Intel's XTU preventing you from undervolting because of their "undervolt protection".
Thank you SO much for this video....to the point, clearly explained, and just what I really really needed. Most of the other videos on YT just waffle on endlessly before getting to the point, I have wasted many hours wading through them and could have saved so many if I'd seen this one first 🙂

@@TheProvokedPrawn Yes I also added a RAM fan for the DDR5 even though it doesn't get that hot. I can only run four sticks at 5000 MHz. My p core seven is still throttling. I'm wondering if there's an air bubble in the paste. This is my first CPU install. Last editing PC was pre-built and AMD it never got too 🔥
You have to look at specs, what case you have, whats your fan set up, What air cooler or aio you using. Is your room hot. Everything has to be thought out for the cpu temps to be raised
If anyone is crashing loading up games, in the games menu or while downloading shaders lower the Performance Core Ratio by x2. This completely fixed crashing for me.
Try the CPU contact frame. Don't use the stock retention arm
There is nothing wrong with the stock frame. People have been using it for over a decade with no problem. So send out bad information.
@@kasarnfla watch Gamers Nexus about the contact frame. Because the stock retention arm or called stock ILM puts an uneven pressure of the CPU like just on the one side only, thus making the CPU hot
@@pangeranrio0112 I have watch it and own the Thermal Grizzly one. You statement makes it out to be life and death, it isnt. Your cpu will do just fine with the stock frame but will benefit from the contact frame. Nobody has to go get one. Its an option. Be careful how you word things.
@@kalzwirazrd Im not getting into a keyboard war. They work but not needed. People do all these benchmarks when in everyday use your pc will never see those temperatures. Those tools are used as marketing devices to get people to spend money on things they dont need to. If it gave you 20 fps that would be great but I never seen anything but a trivial temperature reduction that will not extend the life of any pc. If it does shows us the evidence that you have personally seen not what your being feed.....
Stock arm is just fine actually, the CPU bending is only a thing cause you install your CPU then screw the motherboard in causing uneven pressure, put your backplates on for a cooler if necessary, screw your motherboard in all screw holes, then install the CPU and cooler to keep the pressure locked on the motherboard
Highly technical video that could prove to be a lifesaver for many of us who are struggling to get the best performance out of our systems. A video that demands to be watched several times on an auxilary computer while experimenting with various settings and methods explained and applying them on the main machine !
Excellent video on the subject !!!
that did help had exhuat fans that where not performing, so took out the back fan and the one i had under GPU and all if better and repaste made a world of a difference, i don't know how to undervolt so i cant mess with that have not found a video, for people like myself to explain what each setting does and whats its for, an there's so many in today's motherboard, TY for Sharing PRO-VO
I totally undervolted my 13900K but its still hot by Cinebench. I set Loadline Calibration from 4 to Level 3. Corvoltage Offset - 0,05 and 253 max Watt Consumption. I desablet the useless 5,8 ghz Boost (to make it idle stable) and set the E Cores from 4,3 to 3,3 Ghz what makes no Difference for Gaming Performance. I have a 360 AIO and use thermal grizzly pads. But the CPU still hits 100 C° while Cinebench. Only for Gaming its much cooler now. Cyberpunk 2077 like 70- 75 °C in 2K Resolution maxed out Setting with a 4090 Phantom.
ruclips.net/video/iiS04RcswHA/видео.html
Unfortunately you can’t use XTU with temperature by under volts on MSI project zero Z760
undervolting is such a clutch, i manage to take off -14c from my i5 with just a small 0.7 offset
Small lol. In what world is reducing 70mv considered small?
I assume you meant 0.070mV lol... But even 0.070mV is quite an undervolt.... and probably not stable at all under high AVX / AVX2 loads.
If you run OCCT CPU+RAM AVX instructions you will get errors, lots of errors. Some might even occur after 2+ hours of testing.
So yeah, 0.070mV is not "small" and certainly not stable.
thank you thank you thank you. I have the issue of the watchdog timer never working properly (the driver update didn't do anything). Curious why this is - did anyone figure this out and get the watchdog timer to work? btw.. undervolting by -0.005 was enough to make the temp stay below 100 and stop doing the BSOD I was getting. Have lost some performance according to benchmarks and cinebench. just glad to have stopped the crashing tbh
I turned off Asus AI overclock and Undervolt protection, everything else default amd xmp enabled. HyperThreading Disabled.
Used intels XTU AI Assist on my 14700k.
P cores 5.7ghz
E cores 4.4ghz
Offset -0.065.
And Holly cow. That bad boy never goes above 65. Hovers around 60 to 63.
Kingdom Come deliverance maxed out
Cyberpunk high settings+Medium raytracing+high crowed density.
Skyrim(heavily modded)
Helldivers.
What cooler did you use? Getting a 14700k and my case unfortunately doesn't support 360mm rads. Have been looking at Artic Freezer III 280mm.
But everywhere I read, everyone seems to say get 360mm as a minimum for 14700k
I tend to stick to using the higher-end stock-clocked AMD 65W CPU's that natively run cooler, & then ditch the stock AMD single 96mm Wraith Fan cooler that comes with it for something more robust. I recently paired a Ryzen 9 7900 12C/24T CPU with a DEEPCOOL AK620 Digital CPU cooler (twin tower heatsinks w/2 120mm fans) so that it stay as cool as is possible in a good air-cool build. No need to overclock. overheat & overstress components if you buy & match the right hardware for the right resolution target (1440p in my case). I also opted for the coolest (& most quiet) running 7800-XT GPU that I could find via online research - which is the ASUS TUF 7800-XT.
In the Intel XTU I have a yellow lightning bolt that says Undervolt Protection, how do I turn that off? It’s not in advanced settings
you have to go into your bios and disable undervolt protection
Paraphrasing, you mentioned "avoid applying undervolt every time the machine boots up" is this only when using XTU? or in general
Asus tuf ai tweak, - offset will help. Undervolt 0.10 .. use to be 1.5 and now 1.4 volt.
Thank you so much for this! I think I turned AI OC on (and XMP off) by mistake, and it's keeping my CPU voltage at 1.6v and then hitting 100C.
Hello, at minute 7.40 explain for the problem that does not allow you to save the settings. I have the same problem and unfortunately trying to update the drivers nothing has changed. I have an Asus Z790-E Gaming WiFi II and I9-14900K, how can I solve the problem, have you found a solution?

Hi i dont have the undervolt protection setting in the BIOS. I have an Asus rog strix b760f gaming wifi . BIOS is Up to Date....
A bit confused as you used minus 0.005 and then when seen again later it showed 0.07. A big jump!
Isn't your Cinebench score quite low compared to what a stock 14900k should be hitting? Everyone I have asked , said it should score around 2200.
I'm having huge issues with my 14900k and nothing seems to help in any meaningful way.
This intel xtui is not working properly on my msi z790 mobo. It is hard to understand effect on vcore because mobo has automatic vcore and vdrop reduction so you have to stabilize voltages yourself in bios anyway.
It would be very usefull to find out the issue with the Intel ETU i get the same issue as you have. I have a Intel I7-14700KF with the Asus Rog strix Z790-H wifi motherboard. I can set the undervolt but every startup i have to set it again. I don't know exact in the bios wich setting it is to set the undervolt as i would do it in bios to override this issue. This is a long term issue and Asus don't even acknowledge it on their own forum. What are your thoughts on Asus multicore enhancement? Should this be disabled potentially to help with temps? Idk if it has quite a performance hit with it being disabled.
Also, do you know the part in the ASUS bios directly relating to the offset so once you find the level you like with XTU, you can then apply it on a BIOS level?
I would also like a response for these 👍🏽

Id make sure that in the system information it says the VBS is off. If not then there may be something else there.
Id suggest maybe taking a look at the bios settings or maybe some of the additional things that xtu says it could be on that warning page on start up. That would be the only suggestion id have for that. But if you arent getting a warning page id reinstall it and retry to see if it comes up or if it runs.

@@TheProvokedPrawn that’s why I’m confused it pops up in the middle of installation saying platform not supported, windows 10 fully up to day i9-14900k
Motherboards by default use the wrong settings look at your cpu datacheets!
Picking up the 7800X3D today let’s go !!!
enjoy!
Thats fine if you want a processor thats roughly equivalent to a 11700k for multitasking, sure it's faster for 1080p games, but who plays at 1080p?
@@Upracefanjust about every competetive player in fps games etc
@@BLEKINGELAGET lol
Simple answer is intel dont have technology too create cpu processors with normal temps!!
90c, 100c is normal even with custom 2x radiators 360mm and 2x pumps and full fans speed, nothing work!!👎
not working on 12th Gen thanks to the intel!
Contact frames are snake oil.
I've tried 3 including the more expensive thermal grizzly.
Made absolutely no difference to cores on i7 13700k.
I think they're meant to be a long term solution, as in the idea is over time your CPU will bend with the standard mounting and then won't cool as well, but that's hard to demo in a short term test.
@@TheProvokedPrawn I've had my CPU in the stock Intel frame for over a year and judging by the consistency on core temps and thermal paste spread, the thermal grizzly CF has made so little difference, after 6 weeks I reinstalled Intel.
My CPU was pre binned so maybe that's why.
There is also inconsistencies on coolers and even contact plates on cpus that cause it to run hotter. They all say results will vary, if you had worse contact it would help more, if it was OK before then it won't work miracles anything. It depends on your set up and they always state it, just because it wasn't that effective for you doesn't mean that is a universal result.
This can cause USB ports to fail.
Is that right
The easiest thing to fix intel overheating is to switch to AMD
people went from overclocking cpus to underclocking cpus LOL .. Thanks to Intel and their RND
Sinny-bench 😅

HELlohhhh
Heeeeellllooo

Without bios settings, it is useless.
