I’ve practiced stoicism for about a year now after an event in my life. It sets you free, I can assure you. Apply it to your everyday life and you will be surprised and most importantly, happier.🖖😀🇦🇺
I live "the simple life." I never realized that it could be defined as Stoicism. Thanks for this discussion, David. A refreshing change and I think we all need a little break from anxiety politics.
@bleepehdeepdoop First off, I'm on a laptop. LOL. But seriously, the simple life is not sweating the small stuff, not being materialistic beyond necessity, being appreciative of that which we have, and going to bed at night knowing that we did our best for ourselves and others. It's somewhat existential so doesn't translate well.

Thinking the same thing, was nice to have a discussion on a totally different topic, even if it did come back round to tRUMP and the election, unfortunately
the guide to the good life was a book assigned to me to read by one of my professors and it had such a huge impact on my life. highly recommend to everyone
Stoicism and Taoism ... essential philosophies for human contentment. As I what I truly desire from my own thoughts, emotions and actions, to assess my expectations vs the many uncontrollables, it's made a wonderful difference to how I experience life.
Many people believe Pride is the opposite of shame, and they use this false knowledge to mask it as such. These people are fools. For pride is not the opposite of shame, but it’s source. The only cure for either is humility.
Nice insight but calling another a “fool” is the height of pride, and it is dangerous. A very humble man once said, “But whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hellfire.” No condemnation, brother, just saying.
Humility is learned either by being humble - or being humiliated. Pride without gratitude causes a lack of humility. Loving intentions, whether for others or just yourself is the journey. Infinite Love and Gratitude is all there is.
Latin was one of my majors and I loved studying the Stoics. Facing life head-on with fortitude while remaining filled with joy and hope is the ultimate achievement.

Great to see David branch out on his subject matter. Love William Irvine and Stoicism. Sam Harris also does some just see, in depth interviews with Irvine. Three of my favorite people, Harris, Packman and Irvine.
Yep buddhism and stoicism have the same definition of success. Take action for the sake of doing good. Do not worry about the outcome. Also same view of the importance of being in the present, accepting the past (karma). When I start to fear i only have to remember these principles :)
Thanks David. It's been a while since i've looked into/practiced stoicism. These have been rough weeks for me (i've got conservative family and I know I cant get throught to them.) I've been letting negative emotions build a lot, so i needed to hear this.
Fantastic interview! Honestly a lot of what he mentions reminds me of David Goggins. They say more or less the same thing but the professor is a bit more elegant in his speech. Will be getting this book for sure. And if you haven’t read “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins I’d highly recommend it.

@@luszczi not sure, but that would probably still be something a depressed person might say, contemplating life, kind of thinking its his own fault he's not happy, perhaps? But still relevant, if your in good mental health, hopefully most people are, to choose to be happy and content, unfortunately for some, that's not possible 👍
The host kept baiting Dr. Irvine about politics, and I am glad that he didn't bite. I use to listen to the Sunday Stoic but he called it quits recently. Can anyone suggest a good channel to subscribe to? I am not interested in left leaning politics or any politics for that matter. I hear enough of that throughout the week. Just a solid channel that concentrates on stoicism.
@@emp9413 Yeah it's pretty common. Like, the official psychological association disavowed stoicism (lowercase 's') as toxic for mental health, especially in males. Maybe there's some truth in that, but not in any rigorous understanding of Stoicism. It just has to do with this common perception of perpetual endurance, which seems antithetical to emotional literacy, overly individualistic, and neglectful of communal support.
Only problem here is if you know the thing you're striving for wont make you happy, and what you have doesn't make you happy, options run low. I can't just pretend I'm happy about what I have in relation to past situations. So I'm left to believe happiness is perhaps overrated, and some vague sense of fulfillment at the end of immense suffering might be worth it. I cant know til im there, and im curious, so thats all I got.
Why strive for something that won't make you happy? Take a closer look at what you have. Look for the good aspects and focus on them. It is almost certain that what you have is not all bad. I do that every day and throughout the day. That does not mean all my days are happy and joyful, but some are, and it makes it a lot easier to get through the tough stuff.
A good, loving relationship is possible, if that’s what you’re after. If you’re miserable in your current relationship, for example, there may be something wrong - fixable or not.
@@billdickhaus In response to striving to things that wont make me happy, I'm just thinking along the lines of the Stoics when they say that placing happiness on the future aspirations is a mistake because happiness is more suitably found in the present (and I'll say i've experienced this profoundly--burdening your future goals with true happiness only leads to profound disappointment and deeper sadness). With regards to the good and bad things in my life, daily or in general, I'm not sure happiness has much to do with acknowledging aspects of my life that are in some sense objectively good, which dwarf the bad things. I fully acknowledge the good things in my life all the time: damn there are tons, and I can use framing to realize them fully. But happiness as a way of being remains elusive, and so I'm led to believe it is at most a fleeting emotion--pleasantly transient. I can't even imagine that feeling sustaining. So if my mode of being is generally depressive, and happiness is only just sprinkled in to no effect on my general state, then maybe it's not what it's cut out to be. I do appreciate Stoics though when they speak of eliminating anxiety via framing. That's just really practical, necessary even.
@@JustinMoralesTheComposer Haha nah been single for a couple years now, and my psychological state has really ruined relationships in the past. I don't see myself doing that to another person.

The ideology described here comes across as very conservative to me, so I am not bought here. Progressives love to challenge things for better, rigorously and that of which we find purpose in the politics and can be significantly different from being all so content.
The problem is that the western definition of happiness and wellbeing is closer to “fappiness and wellfeeding”. It’s a play on the “self improvement is masturbation” joke from Fight Club. Strangely enough, stoicism is why I don't bother to vote anymore. The world is as exactly as it should be and can't be any other way.
