Melting Aluminum Scrap Shavings - Double Sided Joker Coin: Metal Casting At Home
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- Want to learn how to sand cast metal? In this video I'll be casting a huge double sided Joker coin from scrap aluminum shavings. I modeled up this joker coin in Blender with the Joker on one side and Harley Quinn on the other. After modeling up the coin, I sliced the coin into two parts and 3d printed them on my Elegoo Neptune 4 Max. I then made a mold of the coin in petrobond sand and melted down the aluminum shavings until it was liquid metal. Once molten, I poured the metal into the mold. When the metal cooled, I removed the sprue on a bandsaw and used a wire brush to clean up the coin. If you have any questions on the process, feel free to leave me a comment below.

Hey everyone, so I haven’t done a lot of melts lately as I’ve been really busy and this summer has just been really hot outside. On top of that I’ve been spending a lot of time 3D modeling some new designs which you’ll see in upcoming videos. Today’s video is one of those designs I modeled up so I hope you all enjoy it. If you have any ideas for something I should model, let me know. 👍🏻 Enjoy and have a great weekend!
Do you sell any of your 3D printed coin patterns?
I've been casting for several years, but I don't have a 3D printer and doubt that I ever purchase one (I have too many projects going on, and my time is short.)
I looked at your "store" and the only item that I'm seeing is a pillow.
I need molds and patterns. Stay cool, stay thirsty, my friend!
@walter2990 shoot me an email and let me know what you’re looking for. We can figure something out
Good to see you melting again.
That’s Awesome!! Glad to see you melting again 👍
Your work is always exceptional
Thanks. The coin looks just great!!
Its been a minute since I've had time to watch one of your videos and what a perfect project to come back to! Good work, system and product. Cool results and a teaching tool to anyone who also melts. I love this. Great job!!!
I would like to see you make a Fire Fighter's Maltese Cross and an Paramedic's Star of Life to honor all of the First Responders who keep our Nation safe. I am a retired First Responder. I think that a lot of other Fires Responders enjoy your channel as much as I do. Thank you.
@@johndixon-l1c I’ll have to look into that. Thanks
I agree! I'm a retired FF/Paramedic and I've been watching his channel for years, and I've built several beer-keg foundrys and have been casting myself, but I don't have any 3D printers to make my own patterns.
Two-Face's double headed coin would be a cool companion piece to that.
really nice piece
Very nice, really good work. I loved it.
that Joker coin looks great it looks perfect such a great job😁
Awesome!!
Fantastic
Ok, now THAT is some badass work! I want one in silver, boohoo.... wish it wasn't so danged expensive
SPOT ON👍
Very cool 😎
11:49 utterly stunning! Love it! I'd love to see you casting the Hellenic Flag or the Hellenic Republic Seal one day!
That's freaking cool. I like it.
Great job, Adam!
Thanks 🙏
Cool melt. Stay safe.
Awesome, never seen the prints spray painted before, may have to try that!
You know what this makes me think of? The opening of the arcade game "CarnEvil" where it shows the guy putting this huge coin with a creepy jester on it into the mouth of the jester on the CarnEvil tombstone of Ludwig Von TokenTaker.
I've always liked the idea of making a chess set out of molded metals. Maybe copper for the black pieces and aluminium for the white pieces?
That turned out pretty good. You ought to send a print to Bigstack, the Joker would be right in his wheelhouse I reckon.
Yeah I sent him a few others I did but I don’t think I sent him this one yet.
Glad to see you survived this summer in LV.
The Joker side looks amazing! I think the face was just too flat on the Harley side? No fault of the cast.
I thought the swarf would make a ton of dross like cans. I guess we didn't really get to see.
Like 👍
Hello 👋
Killer work my dude! You didnt really say how YOU liked it?
@@SeanRedux I do like it but I always think I could do better or should’ve done things differently 🤷🏻♂️ overall all though I’m happy with it
Kind of have the BigstackD to it
Its been awhile since your last melting video, this one was great and can't wait for the next one, how about making the Dark Knight next?😊
@@rickypsencik5947 I actually started a Batman one. I’ll have to go back and finish it though
I would love to see you do the sons of anarchy reaper and if you do i will purchase it from you
@@bakersfieldpickers7615 I’ll have to look that up 👍🏻
👍
Dude this turned out really great. Where did you get your sandcastimg supplies? The sprue and runner you use would come in handy
@@dbhunter79 those were 3D printed. Swdweeb has them for sale on his website www.plmfoundries.com
Seeing the Joker coin and Harley Quinn on the baxk reminded me of Two-Face. That would be a dope coin to have. Do you ever make things to sell? Because im a HUGE transformers fan.
Sometimes, usually it’s just commissioned pieces or I sell the designs I model.
Pretty sure there was more metal in the old sprues than in the shavings...
😂
That is a really nice coin. I don't care for for the subject as it is the villain, but its yours, not mine. Can your coins be flatter? Can they still contain the great detail if they are not high relief? Are you able to cjange that? Just a thought I had.
Looks like fun but would it be easier to forge disks and use a Fiber Laser instead?
You would think so but no. For something this size it would take forever to deep engrave and probably wouldn’t be able to go deep enough cause it would lose focus. You could CNC it but on metal it would still take a very long time. I’m running a deep engrave on steel right now and it’s been going already for 6 hours and it’s only 1” wide.
Aluminum does not forge well.
Is there a way to reduce pitting, as seen in 11:54, or does it come with the casting method (or the alloy)? The coin came out perfectly, especially with the sand blaster + wire brush finish - I just want to know whether an investment in metal filler might be worth the trouble when I eventually get my foundry set up. Also, thank you for making these videos. They're always educational, and more importantly - a lot of fun.
The pitting is usually from gas bubbles. You could degas it before pouring I just don’t. There’s a lot of factors that go into it but I won’t go into all that. Metal filler could be worth it but for me and projects I do for fun it’s not worth it to me.
@@ArtByAdrock I'll have to look into degassing. From what little I know of it, the equipment costs might get pretty high, so I may just stick with metal filler or even go without either. Thank you for the reply, and have a good rest of your day.
Is it still 105 in Vegas?
103° today
103 and October... worst days in Vegas for me, hot 100+ dry and no wind... even in the shade it's like some demonic shade burn on your skin haha!
Ha yeah it’s pretty brutal
Did you model, or sculpt the bas relief of the Joker in blender, or did you obtain the relief of the Joker elsewhere and then put it in the coin in blender? I'm new to this so don't know what's possible in blender.
@@airheads24 it was sculpted in blender
Thanks! That's really good! Do you have a video on that process?
@@airheads24 no I don’t ever record cause it takes me a long time.
