The Little Mermaid Trailer was released during the Oscars awards last night by Disney and it was NOT liked. Downvoted to oblivion with comments that firmly announced one thing, this is not The Little Mermaid. But while we've seen these responses before, we went through all of the stages in record speed, from falling for the villain to actually PRAISING the rewriting of history. Ariel isn't Ariel and Sebastion looks like he escaped from a meme. But don't worry, apparently that's a GOOD thing! Before people used to try and keep their mask in place but as more of these movies get made, that mask drops faster and more obviously each time. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)
How can she be quoted as saying "I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they're, and that they should be a 'princess' in every single way." Princess and girls can't even be defined by these ignorant people. 🤦🏻♂️
This is a ridiculous argument. It's fiction, the whole melanin argument doesn't hold water😝 You don't have to like it, I don't either, but stop equating fiction with logic.
It's painfully ironic how these articles paint the original Disney princesses like they were only there to fall in love with princes when these *modern princesses* are all one-note activists fighting for social justice. Ariel defied her father because she was curious about the surface world. Belle gave up her freedom to save her elderly father. Nala ran away from Pride Rock to find someone to challenge Scar. Esmeralda taught a handicapped man kindness and happiness. Jasmine left her cushy palace life because she was sick of being a "prize to be won." And do I even need to mention Mulan?! Edit: Also Kida from Atlantis. She needed Milo's help to save her civilization from extinction.
All the dragons woketivists want to slay have long since been slain, so they have to pretend that the dragons are still alive so they feel as though their incessant whining and mangling of pop culture has any real meaning.
Snow White's compassion, humbleness and kindness earned the love and respect of the Huntsman and the dwarves. Cinderella's kind treatment of the mice got them to help her escape her abusive family and get her happily ever after. Tiana worked her behind off to achieve her dream of opening a restaurant during the 1920s- a time where women, especially black women were considered less than men. Nani stepped up and raised her sister Lilo when their parents died.
@@arkbien9303 Yes, to all of this! Cinderella, in particular, always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to feminists, just because she's not snarking and sassing her way through every single scene with her stepmother or stepsisters, and it's always pissed me off
@@jothecocopop Cinderella behaves exactly like the mental and emotional abuse victim she is. (I know this from experience, I grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive household) Quiet fortitude, grace in the face of indignity and emotional resilience in the face of people who are trying to crush your spirit is far more empowered than a loud, wisecracking snarky b!tch and I'm wholeheartedly sick of the idea that a 'strong woman' must be, for all intents and purposes, a man with a uterus. 🙎🏻♀️
Exactly. And if I’m being honest, not retorting to every cruel thing your step-family says to you in a snarky or bitter way takes more courage than if you would in spite.
As far as the article's "woman doesn't need saving" line goes, no, OF COURSE ARIEL DOESN't NEED SAVING, because Hans Christian Andersen wrote the story that way in 1837! Ariel has been saving the prince for the last 186 years, but these hacks don't know any history that happened before last week. In fact, (spoiler alert) she even goes one better at the end of the story and when she's given the chance to take revenge on the prince for abandoning her, not only does she not do it, she sacrifices herself so her sisters won't be indebted to the Sea Witch any more, which is pretty heroic beyond anything we've seen from Disney so far, if you ask me!
Um, yeah, you see, traditional 'journalism' has transitioned into 'neo-jurinalism', and identifies as the scented cake in the bowl. He/she/him/her/its/our/their will eventually dissolve away. Maybe very soon. Hey, it ain't our fault! Everybody's been trying to tell 'em for years.
Her logic surrounding the "But daddy, I love him!" is something else. Everything Mlaba writes about is directly refuted by Ariels actions in the movie.... it's almost like she didn't watch the film before writing this. Ariel rejected her societal norms/duties at the very start of the film to peruse her own interests. Then she goes against the rules to rescue a drowning human who she falls in love with of her own free will.... Goes against other rules and contacts Ursula and makes a deal. But somehow, in Mlaba's mind that's patriarchy? Hell this logic doesn't even hold up as at the end of the film everyone who was against this whole debacle now support Ariel and her decision..... so what magical forces are at play here holding Ariel back?
Moreover, while she did fall in love with Prince Eric, just because she said “But daddy I love him,” even in the 1989 Disney film and Hans Christian fairytale, trading fins solely for a man wasn’t an issue. In the animated Disney movie, King Triton pushed his youngest daughter by responding to her new crush on this human Prince she rescued against the rules by destroying her grotto collection. Before that, yes, she was daydreaming about the Prince, but not making any plans to trade her fins, the chance to be with her family, and voice for legs. Her father pushed her to the edge. Additionally, Ariel was already curious about the human world. Eric was her ticket to exploring the world above. Yes, she fell in love with him, but if she hadn’t, she likely would have found another way to explore the world above.
Great points. But if you live in reality you would know that women do whatever they want then claim that they are opressed. this debate is not won with logic.
Literally Ariel is OBSESSED with the human realm qnd falls in love eith Eric AFTER a lot of people like to say "Ariel threw away her family for a man" nah man, she wanted the world first, the man came after. Eric was, for all intents and purposes, the straw that broke the camel's back
My gf, who is completely avoidant of the whole debate around this sort of thing, is one of those girls who wanted to be Ariel (still does lol). She saw the trailer yesterday and...I could see the disappointment and death of wonder in her eyes. She said it felt hollow, looked terrible, and the big change just didn't work given the cultural roots of the story (same part of the world she's from). That's what made me realise what's at stake here - ruining a masterpiece for the people who grew up loving it to satisfy some middle-aged Twitter addicts. FFS
I love Ariel, I grown collecting her images and dolls and for sure I won’t buy any different look from original, it’s not about Haley, I feel sorry for her, just she’s not Ariel. Simply as if she would play Elsa from Frozen… she wouldn’t be Elsa, no matter how good she played or dressed.
@@elenagavrilova7499 i used to say the exact same thing (minus the collecting) back when this movie was still in production, and people had a blast hating on me. 😂
when Ariel pulled Excalibur from the Rosetta Stone and cried "by the power of Grayskull I have the power!" and then took the Kurgan's head I felt so empowered
I'm not a Japanese cyborg, but I could identify with Alita Battle Angel. These weirdos always saying they can't identify with a character unless it's the same race as them, is downright peculiar.
Yeah it sounds mighty racist... when you say it out loud it does sound a little... racist. But that's impossible, it'd be ironic if they are being racist when their goal is to... not be racist?
I'm with I'm with you on that one I love alita battle angel I'm not a lying but I love mufasa and Simba I'm not white or scientist nor am I green but I always wanted to be the hulk
And it speaks to a very narrow set of criteria (ie one) that you identify with. Forget feelings, strengths, weaknesses, resilience, talents, ideas etc etc in people in other races, shared humanity etc. I grew up curvy in the 80s. There are NO princesses for me, only evil witches, but I still managed to identify with the humanity of the heroines.
Love how she says what a big deal this is for black and brown girls; as if Tiana, Kida, Audrey Ramirez, Esmeralda, Mirabel Madrigal, Gabrielle from the Little Mermaid TV series, Moana, etc didn't already exist.
@@mmecharlotte The thing that made Atlantis so great was that the characters were diverse but you remember them because of their diverse personality's. A lot of Hollywood writers forget that fact sadly
I remember those Little Mermaid series we had some on VHS. Gabrielle was the deaf mermaid right? It felt completely natural for her inclusion and not like some nefarious representation agenda, her character worked great.
@@Flufferz626 I used to really love that series as a kid. Gabriella was amazing! Her episode was so well done! It's so sad how they forgot they used to make good stories.
"Little black girls and see themselves represented" What about creating brand new disney movies with black characters instead of literally rewriting history. That could literally bring people closer to each other, no one would have the right to complain (if it's done in a logical way) and they would be original. Now that would be awesome. And that would require effort so it won't happen.
@@richardlaceyfield9 as someone apart of the online writing/creative community i'd say that's only partly true. hell the main interest in why i write is because i rarely see western media nowadays talk about people treated like monsters that wasn't some race or gender baiting crap. but i and several others have and a few have developed followings. i do it for scratching a creative itch personally. but the problem is you feed people garbage or the same thing for too long long and they look at it like caviar and anything deviating is either fucked over by the studio/company or is looked at like its a bad product for no reason other than difference. it doesn't help that this need for diversity is artificial and is artificially filled with shit like black Ariel and rarely anything original like the owl house's luz. a Latina girl who was isekai'd into a world of magic . instead tried and true with some political sprinkles is the choice over new potential. is there some political messaging in the Owl House? yes the boiling isles is lgbt friendly with no frame of reference to bigotry according to the creator but besides the main romance its a background detail(various pride flags/lgbt couples in some of the shots). but the show despite having a white guy as the main villain there is no message of white man bad. belos is a sociopathic man from the colonial era of witch trials with a hero complex who refused to realize he was taught wrong even going as far to murder his own brother. who shed their shared way of thinking once he learned that witches weren't evil creature that needed to be burned in holy fire. belos has the same belief as these people thinking they are doing something good trying to mask their misdeeds. belos the genocide of all magical creatures to be hailed as humanity's hero of a bygone era and these idiots desecrating and reshaping history and media to look good for twitter morons. zee fixes art is a good example of what i'm talking about. they became infamous redesigning female(if i remember right) anime characters from fanart to be fat and black and shaming the actual artist behind the character and the fan artist creating arguable monkey-men drawings or in their case monkey-women in trying to be "inclusive" they just looked extremely racist and the art and commentary community dragged them for it for good reason
Ummm black people ARE creating black characters… no one is accepting them… You saw what happened with the princess and the frog??? She was a damn animal 90% of the movie…. There’s always a Black leading character that’s changed into a damn animal or an object in each movie… That argument is getting old…
@@pizzaroll7243 I don't know what are you talking about. Should I talk about Denzel Washington, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie Foxx, Wesley Snipes etc? Some of them are not even just "famous" but straight up main iconic characters of classic immortal movies. THe reason nowdays diversity hits in a different way, because it's FORCED, and done badly. Do you know "Warrior"? The whole show is about chinese gangs fightning white people in america during the railroad building times. It's popular and beloved, and NOT because of the white characters. People doesn't care about skin color IF the story is GOOD and makes sense. Otherwise, nothing works. When I watch wuxia movies, I don't want to see any white people. I never felt that I'm not represented in kungfu movies and samurai movies as a white person :D I never cared for a second. I didn't have to see myself in order to relate...
7:42 Uh, did they forget that Tiana from “Princess and the Frog” exists? An original twist on a classic story, hell they even read the classic story at the beginning of the movie and acknowledge it throughout. I love that movie. Why can’t there be more like that. Disney hasn’t done Swan Princess yet. A black swan Princess would be amazing! (As long as they prioritize the narrative over sending a message 😒)
Come to think of it, a woman saving a man is so normal and common place that it's not that remarkable: The Princess and the Frog, Mulan and The Little Mermaid are just three examples.
Do you guys remember the 2015 Cinderella remake, which actually had a nice message to it, gave the evil stepmother a motivation, gave the prince an actual character, had him and Cinderella actually talk to each other several times throughout the movie, and DIDN'T have the CGI animals talking? That was a nice movie. The only Disney remake that greatly improved on the original.
To an extent, at least till the climax where they completely dropped the ball. Inadvertently making her MORE PASSIVE. It's genuinely sad. Compare the cartoon Cinderella actively directing her rescue, guiding the mice to get the key and urging the friendly birds to "Get Bruno, Get Bruno!" so he could distract Lucifer from stopping the mice. Meanwhile, live action Cinderella was content to sit in a corner doing nothing. Just a song to herself with the window shut. If not for the mice opening the window (of their own volition) the prince wouldn't have ever noticed she was there.
Reminds me of a line from an old song. ' And two or three out of sixty-seven ain't bad, No two or three out of sixty-seven ain't bad.' dOh! No, it went 'Two out three ain't bad.' Sorry. never mind. My bad.
Cinderella '15 is actually a delightful film. It was an escapist and uplifting fairytale with good role models for both girls AND boys. So well-acted. And featuring perhaps the most beautiful gown in the history of film costumes. It's worlds away from this dumpster fire of an agenda movie.
I've been watching old martial arts movies, and weird thing: I was able to enjoy them even though I'm not Chinese and living hundreds of years ago. Even though I didn't "see myself" in them, I could still somehow relate to the characters, their struggles and their experiences. That's why I think it's flawed to think that simply changing a character's skin colour will make them more relatable to those that are the same skin colour.
My favorite cartoon growing up was Transformers, and Optimus Prime is still one of my all-time favorite protagonists. Clearly that must be because I'm a transforming robot from Cybertron who's just happy to see myself represented on screen, right?
...and when the product flops, deep down in their little black and jaded souls they just say to themselves, well our poor sordid inferiors didn't get the message, I guess we'll just have to do it again. ...and again, and again, and again.
@@EbenezerEibenhardt I mean, "lacked in it's messaging and imagery" is not completely wrong, but the intention felt more like they're taking an already problematic adaptation, and made it even worse. I recommend Andersen Dowa Ningyo Hime from 1975. It's a more faithful adaptation to Hans Christian Andersen's original tale of the Little Mermaid.
Ah, yes, the first black Disney princess (TM)... also known as Tiana! Fun thought process: the original Little Mermaid movie could very well just be a horror story. Ariel collected human memorabilia because she was enchanted by the dry world. Now, just think for even a moment if she just kept Eric when he fell off the boat. "Nope, you're part of my treasure trove now."
On the face of it, it is a garbage story. An impetuous teen disobeys her father, risk the safety of her community, and then must be rescued by the men in her life. All the while never truly learning a lesson. Even as a kid I realized the story was screwed up.
@@allbullaside7778 I've met a LOT of women who have done precisely this. Obviously, they weren't mermaids, so that was different. But we all know this story doesn't make sense for Ariel to be Andrew...
@@allbullaside7778 what would be considered learning a lesson from ot? Ariel being dead at the end? She is highly unlikely to repeat the same actions again. Also her community would hardly be endangered by her actions, it was only because Triton was willing to hand over his trident to save his daughter that Ursula could even be a threat to the kingdom, otherwise he would have been invincible. If you are talking about humans being aware of Atlantica's existence, they wouldn't have any way to reach it at the bottom of the ocean, as they lack the technology for deep sea diving
My favorite part of that movie was when the king told Ariel not to go to land bc she’d be in danger, and she came back with “I am not in danger. I AM the danger.” Gave me chills
I was spellbound by the scene where Ariel was nearly offed by Natural Born Killer Mickey Knox in a New Mexican diner. Who says mermaids don't need melanin?
Disney was so terrified of the reaction to this trailer ... which is why they released it during the Oscars. Because noone in their right mind voluntarily watched the Oscars.
The fact that the media is desperately saying for people to watch it, just tell us that they know this isn't going get the recipe they wanted in the theaters at all.
It's ironic in the extreme that those who claim to stand on the side of acceptance think that the ability to relate with a character depends so much on self-inserting on a skin-deep level! 😂
The Disney version of villa mane is not the real man made the original mermaid is the Real Madrid to me it is dark it is gruesome you should read it because it is good the Disney sucks and does remake sucks as well
I feel like Halle Bailey is just being fed talking points by a Disney PR agent. I'm sure she's a very talented singer and up and coming actress, but it feels a bit like she sold her soul to the devil, which incidentally lines up with the plot of the Little Mermaid. Ariel sells her voice to Ursula so she can be human, and Ursula uses that to manipulate and take advantage to grab for power.
I mean, if what that magazine cover claims is true, she's just a tool made by Beyonce to spread the glories of modern feminism and basically being a living talking post
when i was a little pale vietnamese girl, i had no issue identifying with cinderella, jasmine, and pocahontas. children don't give a damn what race the princesses are. and even if they do, why not make amazing black princesses with original storylines?! tiana was so iconic, there is no reason to believe that they're incapable of creating new black princesses that are good!
Really, entertainment has always been a vehicle for opinions of the filmmakers, but it was done better, or much subtlety. I mean Dawn of the Dead has themes about consumerism and violence in society, but it’s done well. They don’t stop a gory scene of flesh ripping for the zombies to have a discussion of the distribution of meat gap between male and female zombies.
message in entertainment has existed for a long time. it just becomes problem now when the message is a partisan one, that lifts a side and denigrate the other side.
The actress talks about this film like she's Martin Luther King giving a speech at the memorial. Sorry sweetie, but that battle was fought and won decades before you were even born.
If they wanted to update for modern audiences, why not set it during modern day and have Eric fall off a cruise ship? Or maybe go into left field and make him a Navy SEAL. I’d watch that movie.
they hate the US military so they would emasculate him low-ball. as interesting as that sounds it'd have to be done by someone who actually cares in order to be good
Its like these people never even watched the original movie. ARIEL LITERALLY SANG AN ENTIRE SONG ABOUT HER DESIRE TO BE IN THE SURFACE WORLD PRIOR TO SAVING ERIC!! Eric was just the straw that broke the camel's back and changed a distant dream into something she metaphorically would make a deal with the devil to accomplish.
They should use the original story from the little mermaid from anderson, it's rather gory but still pretty good and in Germany alot of people who grew up with it would feel nostalgic. But let's be honest, Disney would never do the "each step feels like you walk on sharp knifes and glass shards"
What is this comment? It's the same kind of comment on that little mermaid video. Are you a real person? Has nothing to do with what you actually said It's just the way you said it I have seen this in the comment sections a lot lately and it's tripping me out lol
I have the pleasure to say I haven’t seen a single live action remake. I knew they wouldn’t beat the originals. Now it’s more than been confirmed! I just hope it flops!
Jungle Book wasn't too bad. But the story already "fits" a live action telling better than the rest. Save, perhaps Beauty and The Beast, but that was poor execution.
Don’t want them. The only one worth watching is the Lion King imo. However, I would watch a white princess and the frog. Got a feeling I’ll never see that though.
They already had a black princess named Tiana. They don't need to race-swap a classic character. Just make new characters and new franchises like they did with Moana and Encanto. Those happened to be two of the best Disney animated films in recent years. Moana is daughter of the village chief, Mirabel is granddaughter of her village's matriarch. That's close enough to princess material in my book. They can always make new princesses, there's no reason to "rewrite history" while unmaking a Disney classic.
I've always been sincerely confused about how they keep twisting the story about how it's all about Ariel wanting to be under a man's thumb. Except that if that was the case, she would have listened to her father, instead of rebelling. She ALWAYS wanted to go to the surface world, which is what caused the conflict, her meeting Prince Eric? Disney Princes are so forgettable, sadly. was the added bonus that made her do it. If it weren't for him, she'd have popped up from time to time, and then went back to being miserable, under the control of her well meaning but domineering dad. The boy got her to do something about it. Did she make a mistake in the process, yes, but that's part of growing up. Also, this idea that the Prince was going to somehow end up worse is pretty telling, like these people immediately assume that all men are evil and are waiting to abuse a girl cuz reasons, or they can.
They botched the grotto scene. They COMPLETELY botched the grotto scene. It's the scene that acts as the keystone for the entire plot, the pushes both Triton and Ariel over the edge, the scene that puts them both at their nadir, and they botched it because, "Daddy, I love him!" is "problematic." That means this remake will likely have a TERRIBLE structure. In the original, everything before the grotto scene was building up to it and everything that followed as a result of it. That's why I say that it is a keystone scene, because, like the keystone of an arch, it holds the whole structure together. And they threw it out because of ONE LINE.
Yo, I noticed that too. It was really awkward that not even a skilled actor like Javier Bardem (Triton) could make it work. Both Bardem and Halle looked so stiff and cheesy
@@EbonyPenmarks I suspect that some of the stiffness may be from having to act while also being hooked up to wires and wearing all kinds of bits and pieces for post production to replace with Mermaid parts. It's hard to act when you're distracted. Throw in that they're probably on a green screen set AND have dubious direction and it's easy to see that there's a lot undermining their performances. Plus, the script is just not good. I don't think any actor would be able to pull this off under all those circumstances.
@@rachaelbrugmans4309 Yeah, but they're both comedically inclined, so it's easier for them to get into character and stay in character for the sake of the joke.
My favorite part was when she confronted Ursula saying, "and I am all the mermaids!" And all the voices of the other mermaids on the light side of the force echoed in her head, she did a backflip, snapped Ursula's neck and saved the day.
I cried at the end when they cut up all those tentacles to steam and eat and danced around the pot to Yub-nub as the Force ghosts of Ursula and Neo and Rocky Balboa smiled over them. Cried like a little girl.
I lost all respect for Halle when she started trashing Jodi Benson's version of Ariel, especially after Jodi said she was really happy for her and defended her
1:31 "The people who want to rewrite history... Never the good guys, really, are they?" More Disparu gold. Cheers mate, glad you're out there calling these bastards out 💪
One time I saved my dad from drowning. At that time, I didn't think "good thing I was inspired by a movie where a woman saves a man", what I really thought was "I got to get my dad to the shallow part". Sometimes there are times where an outside "inspiration" isn't needed. People just act because the situation needs it.
And despite the fact that she was taught to fear humans, she had a kind heart and saved him anyways. In the original book, Ariel was immortal and did not have a soul. She had already been in the ocean a long time and felt isolated. She wanted a soul. She wanted to get out there and see the world, that’s a damn good motivation honestly. I’m pissed that the actress said “she went up there for a boy.” The song Part of Your World literally explains her motivations, it’s like she didn’t even see the OG movie or read the book (which is so well written, Hans Christian Anderson had such a beautiful style)
There is a weird message where women are all independent and don’t need men, as they are all awful pigs, meanwhile men need to ask for help more and need to be save by women, but not because it’s a kind thing to do, but because you need to lecture and prove a point to men that women are independent and are better than their male counterpart and don’t need men and that men NEED help from women, which the ‘saving a male’s life’ part wouldn’t be bad at all if they weren’t making it into more of a lecture about who is better than who rather than saving the male out of respect for the male and his life.
"For a long time, people have been debating over 'evolution' versus 'intelligent design'... and Disney are proving that 'moronic design' is still a very plausible third way" I'm dead. Hilarious as ever
At this point everyone's dreams about Disney is for it to be destroyed or remade into what it used to be, what it was loved for. Not destroying history for woke messaging.
I understand that they wanted to add diversity but they went about it in the worst way possible. They could have introduced a new character to the movie like they did in the little mermaid animated series. A new friend. But no it was easier to take away the only greek princess that there was. Ariel is the daughter of Triton who is the son of Poseidon. And honestly she meant a lot to me as a Greek little girl growing up. And now she's gone. Not to mention she was 1 of the only 2 red headed princesses disney had. And I'm sorry they did not keep the red, her hair in the live action film looks more brown and bland then it does red. The new movie is cultural appropriation. They are taking away from 1 to give to the other. It's disgusting. And incase anyone forgot disney already has a black princess, uniquely so if I might add. So why not create another? No no... erasing what was created is easier.. it's better to just cut out white people and other cultures and ethnicities such as gingers, greeks and whites.
I should not be surprised that Disney have become this 'Mask Off' with their intentions lately, but something painful still churns in my gut at hearing how happy and excited they are to 'rewrite history'.
Yeah, it's one of those "you know people are going to see you as a villain.... why do you not care?" It makes my skin crawl wondering just what the next issue will be.
I love when Sebastian said "You see in this world there's two kinds of creatures. Those who have legs, and those who swim". Actively had me violently vibrating and crying hysterically in the theater.
I never needed a character to be the same race as me to feel a connection to them or to feel represented by them. The original disney movies didn’t need to have a message shoved into our faces, it could be interpreted and felt in its own way. The message was there without it needing to be spelled out but i guess audiences now a days are too stupid to understand them 🤷🏽♀️ The original movies were pure art, beautiful colours and music. Animators working their assess off to tell a story, i saw a behind the scenes of the original Disneys Alice in Wonderland and how they hand paint every single frame, the shading, the small details, all by hand! It would have taken such a long time and they did it all with passion, and that created some of the best animated movies ever made.
I agree with the fact that they should have more Disney princesses of ethnic background, but I also think they need to stop changing the princesses they already have. what they need to do is make new princesses that come from the history of those ethnicity's . Like maybe an egyptian princess , African one ( I would love to learn of an African childrens story) or an Australian aborigine princess there is three very rich cultures that they could probably find some wonderful new princesses or maybe even a prince as the main character and a princess as the supporting roll honestly I would like to see that as well!
@@ikept_the_jethryk2421 Yikes! Harsh, but not entirely unfair - hell, with what she’s been spewing on Disney’s command, she deserves to catch a little flak, or a harpoon (oh, wait, that was probably aimed at Melissa McCarthy).
@@whitebeardskydaddy6756 The real question is: wouldn’t the Prince prefer the head of a fish and the rest - human? Fewer SJW diatribes, and more … fun?!
Most boys-black, white, yellow, brown-around the world who grew up watching DBZ can identify with Goku (or Vegeta, or whichever male character you prefer) despite not being from Japan or looking Japanese. You don’t have to look like a character to be inspired by them!
this. the black washing has to stop. please i am tired of it. my favorite character in all media Raiden from MGS who is a white guy from Africa. and a cyborg ninja in black armor. i like the character he is not his skin color. stupid racist humans.
Black people generally don't feel that way, but they will put on an act in front of the public by saying things like that to get attention and because they hate white people. They feel inferior and are deeply jealous of whites and take every opportunity to make themselves look marginalized in a white country.
Omg i actually never thought about that. Manga and Anime mostly never show Japanese people - their target demographic. Yet they still feel themselves represented cause they can identify with these characters.
I read an article somewhere in the 1990's that the reason they draw big eyes in most Animé, is that they consider Westerners to be more aesthetically attractive overall and Japanese people tend to get obsessed with other countries, especially the UK. There is a Theme Park of sorts somewhere (maybe in Tokyo or Osaka) with all the iconic items from London or the UK, like Red Telephone boxes, the Union Jack flag and the Mini car.
Once again, Hollywood (And Disney in particular) have missed the point entirely. It would also have been interesting if, instead of just doing a Live action remake of the animated version, they actually made it... closer to the source material. For example, The Little Mermaid literally *has no soul*, but humans do. So Mermaids just become sea foam when they die. :) And they're incredibly chill with this. As someone who grew up with and LOVED the Little Mermaid as a child, I can say that the movie was not perfect. I really do sympathize with King Triton more as an adult. When he says "Humans are dangerous" he means it! They hunt and kill fish and pollute the waters, he has every right to believe humans are dangerous! And Ariel is way too curious in this guy she barely knows but is willing to risk everything for... and he risks everything for her in the end- Dude rams a ship into the sea witch, major props. Ponyo, Miyazaki's take on The Little Mermaid was at least something interesting and unique. His environmentalism was on full display with Ponyo's father being gravely displeased with her falling in with a polluting menacing human. Yet, the two characters have a bond and while it's not my favorite in the Miyazaki library, it's in some ways better than the one I grew up with. I don't think people will be saying that about the live action. It has messages of friendship, loyalty, protection, truthfulness, kindness, etc. All things that children should learn.

I had goosebumps when Sebastian turned to Poseidon and whispered: "Not an expert, but if I were you, I would demand a DNA test, mate. Again, not an expert."
I can find problems in movies from my past, and still enjoy them despite those problems. While yes, some of them have so many problems I can no longer stand to watch them any more, others I can simply acknowledge that they are reflecting views and opinions of the times they were made in or were representing. The problem I see a lot nowadays is that people do not want to forgive older movies or shows for reflecting the times they were made in, they simply want to condemn them for the problematic elements while also using those same problematic elements to dismiss the good elements and messages that can be found within those movies or shows.
My biggest annoyance with this is that DISNEY HAS POC CHARACTERS THEY COULD USE AS GOOD REPRESENTATION In the 1990s The Little Mermaid animated TV show; Ariel has a black/Hispanic deaf friend who's dream is to be a singer and become a star! She's the perfect character for a new mermaid fantasy film about the struggles of being a hard of hearing/deaf musician (though it fits underwater due to vibrations) and it could be such a fun movie. And for Peter Pan THEY HAVE IRIDESSA A BLACK FAIRY THEY COULD HAVE USED INSTEAD OF REHASHING PETER PAN. I literally hate disney because they could ACTUALLY represent people instead of race/gender swapping characters for the sake of pseudo-representation. A poc character being the star of a movie has shown to do extremely well for movies but the movies it does well for are the ones where the characters ARE ORIGINAL. Not rehashed.
I love that although you are not a fan or have any emotional connection, you can see how ridiculous this is. As for myself, I have spent the greater part of my life being a huge fan of this movie. I've probably watched the second disc (behind the scenes content) of my Little Mermaid DVD as much as the actual movie, I have the dialogue and every song memorized , as well as a collection I have curated myself of original concept art from a version pitched to Walt in the late 1960's. Obviously I am not an average fan or a casual viewer, but someone who cares deeply for this original film. When I watched the trailer, I felt so frustrated. I already paid to see the Lion King and the way they butchered that classic just worries me to all hell, thinking that this will never end. Disney is just going to continue milking a dead cow and making these sub par, lame renditions of classic films and not even budging when they flop at the box office. Putting in a minority to shield themselves of valid criticisms and dissing fans every chance they get. I'm sick of it, but I'm glad I am not alone and that people like yourself call out this bullshit every chance you get
if Disney's reason for making Ariel black is for "diversity" then they completely forgot their whole roster of disney princesses because they are pretty diverse already. Tiana is black, Mirabel is Columbian, Jasmine is middle eastern, Raya is south east asian, mulan is chinese, Belle is french, etc. IF what they want is to represent a black disney princess they could have remade Princess and the Frog.
Disney thinks nostalgia alone makes a good story It doesn't and they shouldn't ignore the diverse roster they already have nor the options with African and Caribbean folklore and mythology.
Brilliant video, Disparu! This is why I effing LOVE your content! I am a proud (American) descendant of Hans Christian Andersen. To see my ancestor’s masterpiece “rewritten to reflect the world we live in today” makes me sick. I loved Disney’s animated “Little Mermaid” because i believe (a) it was a fantastic movie, (b) it was true to Andersen’s original tale, and (c) it made me proud of my Danish heritage. Ariel was feminist, but not a man-hating FemiNazi. There was romance, but it was sweet and beautiful. Now, I know that Disney is dead and has turned into a force of evil. If you want to make a movie about a black mermaid, please do. But don’t destroy my ancestor’s beautiful story to do so. Create a unique black character who is a mermaid. Write an epic new mermaid story with mermaids from all sorts of different racial backgrounds. Oh, but Disney doesn’t care enough about its audience (black, white, Asian, Latino, etc) to make GOOD, original content anymore. Well, I guess when the company goes bankrupt, we’ll all give a sigh of relief.
Those people have never seen The little Mermaid. It connects the nativity of children, and the reality of business folk wanting to take advantage of the naive youth. It's about a father wanting to protect his daughter from the cruel world About a King who lost his Queen, and swears to protect his people from those who took his beloved. It's about universal timeless themes that reflect everyone no matter what time you are in. All one had to do was open thier hearts and eyes, and look beyond the pretty colors and mermaids.
Disney: All dreams can come true. Me: That's a big fat lie, just like Disneys big fat ego. Making a live action movie, from an animated classic is not only disrespectful to the original actors, but feels unnecessary. Pat Carroll is rolling in her grave Disney, I hope you're happy. 😡
I really do not understand why it suddenly became "a bad thing" to want to have a Soulmate/ to want to find true love. Isn't that what life is about? Love? Somehow now it is reprehensible, to encourage little girls to want and fight for that.
But, she can breath under water. Did she get hit in the head with debris, or, Eric chokes her to death in a drowning panic, or... ? Come on man! Speak up! The suspense is killing me!
@@whitebeardskydaddy6756 Spoiler alert: Prince Eric choked Ariel to death with the Heart of the Ocean once he realized she was planning to use it for her “special herbs” habits.
I thought the whole reason for doing a live action remake of an animated title was so the remake would look less artificial than the animation. I guess Disney missed that memo.
I loved The Little Mermaid since I was a little kid knowing that they are changing the whole just because it "didn't give out the right message" just breaks my heart to see all of the classics Disney movies changing into new ones while it's a 50/50 if it's going to be good or not this doesn't even feel like its a remake at all when I and my mom saw it we just looked at each other and just knew it was going to be bad it's nice to see what happens if an animation movie was in real life but it just hurts to see how they just change the story and characters and the pilot :(
At this point I am pretty much hoping Disney KEEPS doing this. Keep on until you go completely under. I have ALL the old Disney movies in those big puffy VHS cases, please keep driving those collectible prices up. A few more movies and TV showls like these and we can put Disney behind us except as a possible collectible collection.
If all these classic Disney animations were so wrong, why did I learn so much from them? Was I wrong my whole life to think I learned something valuable? Have I really learned nothing? Am I a bad person? Christ help my soul 😭
well, the fairy tale is Danish, therefore European. It's also based on the original mythology of Undine which is of Germanic origin, and therefore also European. The original Disney film then interweaves other mythological elements from Europe, such as King Triton (son of the Greek god Poseidon) and the city of Atlantica, which harks back to the Greek myth of the sunken city. In ancient times, this city was believed to be somewhere between the North and Central Atlantic. What I'm trying to say is that everything about Ariel is very European oriented. So if Disney really want to create a new and diverse mermaid film, then they should finally try to immerse themselves in other cultures and create films from African, Caribbean or Asian fairy tales and myths instead of making a poc out of Ariel. this is only superficially diverse. at its core, the story is and will remain Eurocentric. the ariel universe in particular is ideal for exploring other legends and myths about mermaids. Triton still could be made a king of the Atlantic Sea. But there could be other kingdoms or undersea societies where disney could include other, non-european legends and myths about sea people in a child-friendly way and develop them further and use old characters as cameos, so that different cultures interact. that would be much more diverse than this disney remake where they want to empower diversity and women but make triton look like he had a harem of seven different mermaids😅
I recommend that you go to Copenhagen where the Little Mermaid's Statue is beautifully displayed on an outcropping of rock out in the bay, and if you're there in Winter, you should walk out across the Baltic Sea to touch her. It's an amazing experience.
I love your line of "will Disney run out of IP's to destroy or out of money first". I hope that they are left with no option but to start selling of these once beloved IP's to survive.
Might end up in the hands of some who will re-enchant them, now that they're nowhere near as valuable as they were. Star Wars, four B I L L I O N Dollars. LOL! Not any more.
They made the coral reefs look so boring and dull… (obviously in reality, coral reefs are so bright and vibrant) this remake has no love when it comes to the backgrounds, all the colors feels super muted
Ariel was the first ginger Disney princess. Ginger erasure is very real in modern media. And no, very obviously fake red hair is not the same as a real ginger.
The actress comments you cavered around 5:19 reminded me of Norman Bates somehow. I don't know why, but those are the vibes I get. It is almost like here ethnicity is a living thing. Or is that a delusion people like her have?
Wasn't the original Ursula designed after "Divine", by whom she was supposed to be voiced? (The reason that this didn't happen was that Divine died) With this in mind, you'd think they would have found a better actor.
The part in the movie where King Triton wrecks Ariel's lair and proclaims "I AM the one who knocks"... Chills man. Chills. One of THE scenes of a movie ever
That press article sets out beautifully why Disney is no longer on my viewing or shopping list. I can’t do anything to ask them to change direction and go back to what they built their company on; all I can do is make sure I don’t fund their messaging and activism.
Sebastian looks like he escaped from a nightmare. That crab is ugly as sin.
How can she be quoted as saying "I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they're, and that they should be a 'princess' in every single way." Princess and girls can't even be defined by these ignorant people. 🤦🏻♂️

Belle gave up her freedom to save her elderly father.
Nala ran away from Pride Rock to find someone to challenge Scar.
Esmeralda taught a handicapped man kindness and happiness.
Jasmine left her cushy palace life because she was sick of being a "prize to be won."
And do I even need to mention Mulan?!

They don't want to know history/literature they want to rewrite it
Her logic surrounding the "But daddy, I love him!" is something else.
Like there was no earth before she was born. Idiot.
Remember, this is the same Disney cooperation that fired Gina Carano for things she did in her own strong free will.
FFS

Uh, did they forget that Tiana from “Princess and the Frog” exists? An original twist on a classic story, hell they even read the classic story at the beginning of the movie and acknowledge it throughout. I love that movie. Why can’t there be more like that. Disney hasn’t done Swan Princess yet. A black swan Princess would be amazing! (As long as they prioritize the narrative over sending a message 😒)
No, they turned it into another weapon to attack *Song of the South* with.
Disney has become Simon Legree.
If not for the mice opening the window (of their own volition) the prince wouldn't have ever noticed she was there.
the story has be told a million times in movies but im sure this will be the firt time it will be turned upside down. antichrist-style, like they do

I wept, thrice! And felt myself fade into the Force.
I miss when entertainment was just that, instead of being a political tool, or vehicle for propaganda!

If they wanted to update for modern audiences, why not set it during modern day and have Eric fall off a cruise ship? Or maybe go into left field and make him a Navy SEAL. I’d watch that movie.
Imagine a navy seal trying to avoid his buddies after that!
they hate the US military so they would emasculate him low-ball. as interesting as that sounds it'd have to be done by someone who actually cares in order to be good
They'd have to make Ariel a merman, name him Aaron and make him love fish sticks...
Modern audiences do not even exist. They only say modern as an excuse to be lazy, incompetent, condescending idiots.
That would actually take effort and talent. Disney doesn't do effort and talent anymore.

@@DeadlyPlatypus The Jungle Book remake was the best by far.
Cinderella was honestly the best one
Don’t want them. The only one worth watching is the Lion King imo. However, I would watch a white princess and the frog. Got a feeling I’ll never see that though.
Cinderella was good. They followed the original and didn't try to "destroy" it
They already had a black princess named Tiana.
No calling the girl from encanto a princess is stretch, but i totally agree with what you said.
Why would anyone want them when this is the studio where Kurt Russell came of age?

"For a long time, people have been debating over 'evolution' versus 'intelligent design'... and Disney are proving that 'moronic design' is still a very plausible third way"
I'm dead.
Yeah, it's one of those "you know people are going to see you as a villain.... why do you not care?"

I never needed a character to be the same race as me to feel a connection to them or to feel represented by them. The original disney movies didn’t need to have a message shoved into our faces, it could be interpreted and felt in its own way. The message was there without it needing to be spelled out but i guess audiences now a days are too stupid to understand them 🤷🏽♀️
The original movies were pure art, beautiful colours and music.

What’s worse is they’re pushing Halle and Chloe onto us when their music is very sexual. Not for little kids at all

They are just trying to add more soul to the movie. Heyooo!
My biggest annoyance with this is that DISNEY HAS POC CHARACTERS THEY COULD USE AS GOOD REPRESENTATION
In the 1990s The Little Mermaid animated TV show; Ariel has a black/Hispanic deaf friend who's dream is to be a singer and become a star!

Disney thinks nostalgia alone makes a good story
It doesn't and they shouldn't ignore the diverse roster they already have nor the options with African and Caribbean folklore and mythology.
Oh, but Disney doesn’t care enough about its audience (black, white, Asian, Latino, etc) to make GOOD, original content anymore. well, the fairy tale is Danish, therefore European.

"on the long-lasting belief that all dreams can come true. What better way to prove that than with a black Disney princess?"
Uhh... HELLO?!
They made the coral reefs look so boring and dull… (obviously in reality, coral reefs are so bright and vibrant) this remake has no love when it comes to the backgrounds, all the colors feels super muted
I can feel Howard Ashman rolling in his grave, while Disney changes his songs and theme for a quick buck.
Yes, Disney, keep giving to us. I want them to dial the woke up to 11! It's so much more entertaining watching RUclips critics tear them apart
My girlfriend is black and named Ariel and she hates it.
Ariel was the first ginger Disney princess. Ginger erasure is very real in modern media.
And no, very obviously fake red hair is not the same as a real ginger.
For hitting the rocks, that ship sure caught fire (all over) really fast. It's like the ship was dipped in fuel.
i cant wait for this movie to come out in 2 months in May 2023!
the roasting will be epic and grand!
(The reason that this didn't happen was that Divine died)
With this in mind, you'd think they would have found a better actor.
The part in the movie where King Triton wrecks Ariel's lair and proclaims "I AM the one who knocks"...
Chills man. Chills. One of THE scenes of a movie ever
It was in there. It WAS a movie. If ever there was a movie, this will be one. There will be acting.
That press article sets out beautifully why Disney is no longer on my viewing or shopping list. I can’t do anything to ask them to change direction and go back to what they built their company on; all I can do is make sure I don’t fund their messaging and activism.
disney telling black people that they dont deserve original characters other than tiana
