No, he was a prisoner just not prisoner of the regime, he was kept prisoner by a higher ranking officer, because he would not share his bribes with his superior unfortunatly rebel troops took the prison while the unfortunate officer was in jail. This is quite normal. Another example is 4 Chinese tourists kept in another jail in Syria. These guys where robbed in their hotel and then locked up and rotures to extort money from them they where held for Four days an when they had no more money they where released. Standard fare in Syria. They all run little scams like this to earn extra money on the side. Meet a traffic cop in Marroco who did this on the side his favorite stunt was to work with the local guides an fine foreigner was driving with local women in the car he would stop a car and threaten to arrest the entire car for having prostitutes in the car. Then the Girl would throw a fit over her being a good girl and then the cop would be ammenable to a bribe to let them go. Nobody gets hurt and they scam a turist out of a couple of thousands of Dirham and the turist gets to feel like a hero for saving a damsel in distres. There is no law against having Strange ladies in your car in Marroco.

I remember seeing his hostage videos years ago. I believe he recently did an interview with the Free Press. He even states that he sees many people that tortured him on news reels of liberators celebrating in Damascus.

A media person who covers up the crimes of those committing genocides is more of a criminal than those perpetrating the crime.This is so because 'it' destroys truth and thus denies justice to the victims of said crimes.
It's odd. If he's an official and this was a site associated with the Assad regime, then why hadn't he made a run for it? Syria had various factions. Unless the geographic location of this prison meant that a prisoner here would likely be affiliated with the winning team, it seems dangerous to liberate a prisoner. He might be clutching her in the event he needs to take her hostage (did they frisk him?). Going into a prison, are you expecting live prisoners? dead prisoners? armed people affiliated with the prior regime? Seems like a scenario where a hardened reporter would be good, rather than someone playing nancy drew. Going into a prison seems like it would require sobriety if it could contain signs of war crimes. If there was a real chance of encountering someone from the assad regime, it seems dangerous. If she doesn't know what she's doing or is chasing juicy stories, she could plausibly get herself killed. If CNN can shrug off getting caught in some dubious reporting, they might still have doubts about what she was doing. Inserting yourself into the story seems inconsistent with being highly prudent. Self-aggrandisement would be something that could cause someone to make journalist mistakes. Beyond that, if CNN doesn't want its employees getting killed, then discretion is the better part of valor. The claim that she was trying to find the missing american journalist makes the story worse. It creates the question of 'why EXACTLY did you think he was there?'. Going into a prison would have news value. But if you're making massive logical leaps or opening the door to increased danger, then... I'll use a weird analogy. There are plausible reasons to go down a coal mine. But if you think it's a gold mine, then you might present as a staggering idiot. The reward has to justify the level of danger. If you're a dummy, then people can't trust your assessments. CNN needs to have faith that their journalists aren't babes in the wood who can be lured into the back of a van with a lollipop (or a promise of a story).
Remember Br'er 🐻 in Uncle Remus' stories, who during a period of famine in the forest discovered a honey bees nest & kept it for himself. Br'er Rabbit found out & told the other animals. Still Br'er Bear faked starvation but couldn't hide his well-rounded belly.
