I understand in order to improve you obviously need to practice but I don't really know HOW to practice if you get what I mean. What websites or books did you use? What methods did you use in your practicing? It would be really helpful if you could do a video on this. Thank you.

I'd also like to add, it's never too late to improve. I've always been interested in drawing, and I've always enjoyed it. But it wasn't until recently I began to take it seriously, and the rate which I'm improving is insane to me. I'm 32 years old, and the only thing I regret is not putting in the time earlier. But now the journey has begun in earnest, and I couldn't be more excited!

35 years old here and is starting drawing again too! Never too late to learn they said and hence I am starting to get serious about drawing again. Same regret as well, wished that I could start earlier, unfortunately technology wasn't as advanced 10 years back and online classes and socia media wasn't that big at that time. My country isn't art focused enough and hence I ended up working in a bank. Didn't really like my current career direction, even though it does pay well. Hence I decided to reignite my passion for drawing this year, especially since COVID had refrained people from going out too often. Guess this is a blessing in disguise. Keep on grinding people and don't give up on your dreams! Start early for the young people out there and don't let others put you down or influence you to another direction.

This is what I needed. I’m starting from scratch and everyone says start with perspective so now I moved on to drawing the body but unlike most people I have no experience drawing the body so I’m trying to learn it while remembering my perspective, but don’t even have my gestures down and I was getting frustrated and stopped for the day. Seeing your thousands of drawing where you just pushed through makes it clear that I just have to get em done regardless of the frustration.
I can’t expect to get anywhere to a professional level if I quite on day 5.
I’m going to look up some sketch book strategies now.

I really like his video “fixing Marco buccis disgusting art with lemons” and “never draw with ovals” (I think those are the titles, btw the hate is just jokes lol) He really shows how you can simplify the body into simple and easier to understand forms. You’ll still need anatomy and figure drawing but i think it’s still super helpful! I’m practicing it now, and I’ve had so many “wow, I get it knoww” moments, and those feel good :). Just wanted to put it out there if you hadn’t heard of him. Keep up the good work!

I tried starting with drawing people but then gave up on that and went back to the basics so i tried environment like rocks, trees, roots, mountains, sea creatures, skulls. And so began my rapid improvement and I kid you not I was 10× better in just 6 months. Now I'm slowly work my way up from sea creatures like whales, dolphins, and sharks to maybe more fishes because those feckers are hard to draw. I hope to then get to animals and the final climb can be drawing people.

For me the best way so far is doing gesture drawings of 1m, 5m and 10 m, study some anatomy from proko videos, like the arms , then get reference photos of arms ( real people, studying anatomy using anime or another stylized drawing just going to lead to bad habits ) and breakdown the muscles you see, after this you try to draw thinking of the muscles but showing what you think it matters.

    • @AwkwardPain
      @AwkwardPain 4 года назад +10

Serious question. Have you tried starting from the legs? Maybe a change of pace could help you. Also what I usually do is block in rough shapes and sizes after I find the pose I am going for (so I have a rough idea of proportions at that point). Hopefully this helps & GL!

This is good advice. I’m currently in a bit of an art block and am having a hard time drawing anything I’m content with... just focusing on the fundamentals and doing studies is a great way to keep creating and get those creative juices flowing.

Been stuck with my unprogressive art for soooo long before I finally decided to study art, like actually sit down and study it. I'm happy to say how proud I am of the progress between the beginning and the end of my sketchbook! It's been slow (and difficult) since I am really trying to hammer down the basics of depth and perspective, but also its been really fun? I've never drawn so much in my life! Your videos have given me heaps of motivation I could have never done without. Thank you so much for all the crazy inspiration!

I loved this, is so genuine about what a sketchbook really is, and how a person should practice. It's a lot like the process I'm currently on. I made a drawing, examined what was good and what I needed to work on, and then started studying fundamentals, a topic a time, always practicing again what I've learned and still learning.
Your progress is really inspiring for someone like me who has a couple of months in this.

I think I can help you with that. basically how i did it (I am at a level where I can use boxes / cylinders to pose characters in perspective) is by watching moderndayjames' videos on perspective, and using drawabox . com to practice making perspective intuitive. it took me a few months, but the progress is really tangible, and I don't regret it one bit.

Not to take anything away from Chris, 'cause his improvement is amazing and skills are absolutely astonishing, but in two years of constant drawing, most people would see significant improvement in their skill. I guess this is just my way of admiting to myself that the main thing you need is time and patience, cause that's the whole thing with art. It took me close to three years, from 14 to 17, to see some significant improvement, and I still have so much more to learn. And now I'm even more inspired to practice. So in the end, I want to say 'Thank you, Chris!', for giving me the push I needed to start doing my best and beyond that!
Damn, really needed to get that of my chest!

Holy moly that's a lot of drawings :D I recently decided to just choose a character each month and practice drawing it. My 1st one is a male, humanoid character so I'm drawing a bunch of poses, practicing heads, practicing the proportions of the body. Practicing the features that make the character who he is. I'm feeling so bad about some of my more shittier sketches but at least I'm drawing.
Reading about all the fundamentals and reading how you're supposed to draw does nothing unless you actually DRAW.

Sycra calls this "iterative practice." Works in writing too. It's basically that rote, "Do it again, again, again" that we all were told was the way to accomplishment when we were 10 years old, and which we also immediately dismissed as a waste of time when we were 10 years old.
